How do you quickly dictate notes, record riffs, or capture any audio, any time? With the Voice Memos app for iPhone!

Just like the name implies, the built-in Voice Memos app lets you record any audio you want to save right to your iPhone. It could be a lecture in school, voice-over for a video, an interview for a project, or anything at all.

If you want to record your song ideas, you want Apple's new Music Memos app. If you want speech-to-text, you want Apple's virtual assistant, Siri. If you just want to record audio, trim it, save it, or share it, you want Voice Memos. And here's how it works!

How to record Voice Memos for iPhone

Recording a new memo is easy.

  1. Launch the Voice Memos app from your Home screen. It may still be located in the Utilities folder.
  2. Tap the record button. It's the big red circle.
  3. Tap the stop button to stop the recording at any time. If you want to continue with the same recording, you can hit record again.

  4. Tap Done when you are satisfied with your recording.
  5. Type a name into the field if you wish to name your recording.
  6. Tap Save. Or tap Delete if you want to trash the recording.

    Tap Done, enter a name, tap Save

How to listen to an existing Voice Memo on iPhone and iPad

You can listen to all the recordings you make right in the Voice Memos app.

  1. Launch the Voice Memos app from your Home screen. It may still be in the Utilities folder if you haven't moved it.
  2. Tap the Voice Memo you'd like to listen to.
  3. Tap the play button.

How to share Voice Memos on iPhone and iPad

You can send recordings via iMessage, email, and more!

  1. Launch the Voice Memos app from your Home screen.
  2. Tap the recording you'd like to share.
  3. Tap the share button on the bottom left of the screen. It's the box with the upward arrow.
  4. Tap the method by which you'd like to share your Voice Memo and proceed as normal with your chosen method.

How to trim Voice Memos on iPhone and iPad

Audio recordings seldom start and end perfectly, but you can trim off any extraneous sound before and after your memos right in the app.

  1. Launch the Voice Memos app from your Home screen. It might be in the Utilities folder if you haven't reorganized your Home screen.
  2. Tap the recording you'd like to trim.
  3. Tap Edit.
  4. Tap the trim button on the middle right of your screen. It's a blue square.

  5. Tap and drag the red sliders in either direction to trim your recording.
  6. Tap Trim once you are satisfied with your edits.
  7. Tap Trim Original to alter to the original recording or tap Save As New Recording to keep the original.

If you chose to save as a new recording, it will have the same name with "Copy" at the end.

How to rename Voice Memos on iPhone and iPad

If you don't like the name you gave your original recording or couldn't come up with one at the time, you can always go back and change it.

  1. Launch the Voice Memos app from your Home screen's Utilities folder.
  2. Tap the recording you'd like to rename.
  3. Tap Edit.

  4. Tap the name of the recording.
  5. Enter a new name and tap OK.

The recording will now appear under that name in your list.

How to delete Voice Memos on iPhone and iPad

There are three ways to delete your Voice Memos, so we'll show you the quickest and easiest way to do so.

  1. Launch the Voice Memos app from your Home screen.
  2. Swipe up to scroll down until the record button is the only thing visible at the top.
  3. Tap Edit in the top left corner of the screen.

  4. Tap the delete button next the recording you'd like to trash.
  5. Tap Delete when it appears on the right side of the recording.

    Tap the delete button, tap Delete

You can also tap each individual recording and tap the trash can to get rid of them.
