I've transfered video out of my SA 8300HD into my Mac using the firewire port on the back of the box. It works like a champ, but my aging DP 1GHz G4 can't playback HD content. I'll be pulling that out of the entertainment center and replacing it with a Mini as soon as they get updated.

I have a decent amount of HD content available to me, but in order to view / record it i need to be using a cable co supplied box or cable card. I like to keep my setup as simple as possible to cut down on failure points. Running cable into the house, splitting it, running it into a cable box, then out via component, then into a capture card, then into my mac then our via DVI/HDMI to my receiver then into my TV offers a lot of opportunity for stuff to go wrong. I'm going to give the TiVo on Comcast hardware deal a try when it's released to the masses, hopefully that will fulfill most of my needs until either a new HD TiVo is released or an Apple product emerges.

Antel0pe, far as I know you ALWAYS have the "analog" whole, where you can route the analog cable or composite out into Elgator (or any capture system). This is how Windows Media Center XP worked as well.

HD is a different ball game, and consider yourself lucky as where I live (Canada), we have no federally mandated QAM or OTA HD, and broadcasters have gamed the flags to prevent non-proprietary DVRs from recording even basic cable.

Likewise, we have no federal mandate for firewire ports or cable cards. You buy the local cable companies box or you go without.

BTW- Have you tried the Firewire -> Mac direct capture? The files are huge but the quality is excellent.

elgato and eyetv are worthless as they are limited to QAM channels. In northern VA with comcast that means you can only get your local channels in HD, everything else is encrypted. Giving up ESPN, Discovery, Food TV, TNT etc. in HD is not something I'm interested in. If it doesnt have a cablecard slot its not comin into my house. In august I should be able to get TiVo software loaded on my comcast DVR which could stop me from destroying the PoS for a year as long as it doesnt suck. If so I'll be happy to wait for an Apple DVR and the next HD TiVo to make a purchase.

Apple was "late to the game" on making a phone too and look what they've done there.

You can do DVR right now with a Mac Mini and Elgato. The DVR is only one component of this patent, which leverages what Apple does best: seamless integration wrapped up in killer UI.

It's idea recycling the same way that there were mobiles before the iPhone...

I would not wait for this, since I'd assume we won't see it for at least a year. However, EyeTV on your Mac can do almost all of this now. However, you must have a Mac compatible TV tuner (SDTV, OTA or QAM channels only) and it hooked up to your Mac. You just can't control it from your living room remote unless you have your Mac attached to the TV.

I agree whole-heartedly that the aTV would be huge with these features, but if they won't let us transfer HDTV rentals off our aTV now, what will the restrictions be on an Apple DVR? I'm certain Apple could revolutionize the DVR, but the danger of angering all the studios and TV networks may be to big a threat to their iTunes business. The third party EyeTV solution will likely be superior for a couple years at least. You can already automatically convert your recordings to aTV and iPhone compatible formats, sync, and share recordings. Remote scheduling, I don't know, but there are "intelligent" program guide selections that adjust times due to schedule shifts.

I plan to put a Mac Mini in the living room when they update it and replace my Tivo. Tivo is great (vastly superior to cable company DVRs), but the monthly fee thing still sucks.

you know, I've been doing this for years using programs like Snapstream's BeyondTv and Frey's SageTV ... Even Windows Media Centers can have this feature. Apple is late to the game.

Methinks this be a wee bit of Idea Recycling.

I've been saving some cash for a new TiVo, does this mean I should wait? I'm about to take a bat to my crappy Comcast SA 8300HD DVR. Ugh....
