@The Reptile: You, sir, are one insightful non-mammalian!

Gates ignored the internet, just like Apple, but their business is less forgiving. Still, what can Gates turn in if he's still alive? His rumpled shirt? Fine. Gates is turning in his rumpled shirt right now.

How about a coordinated Windows 7, Windows Mobile 7 (w/Zune media built in), Xbox 520 launch in 2009 with shared marketplace and transparent content mobility, powered by Live! and subsidized by add revenue where appropriate?

Forget Apple, give me that!

Rene, when Gates wrote his book he spoke about how no technology company that dominated in a segment ever lived on to dominate the next wave in technology. I think that he believed that he'd get Microsoft to that next stage on the web. Problem is that others always defined what that next breakthrough technology was from the day that Microsoft was founded whether it be DOS, PC Applications, GUI, Media Players, Browsers, online gateways, IM's or search. So it always plays out as it's Microsoft vs the world. In order to change their culture they've got to sweep away their legacy management and allow them to rethink what they want to be when they grow up.
