Problem solved(I think). For about the twentieth time I deleted my .mac account from my ipod because it had spontaneously changed to .mac and changed the smtp server to match. When I was going through the process to set it up yet again I noticed that if you are not careful the Description field will autofill as your mobile me address i.e. joeblogs@mobile.me. Instead of allowing this to happen I was careful to put in the exact text suggested in the ‘blank’ field: My MobileMe Account. After doing this I have had no further problems. In the past my new settings only survived for a few hours before switching but it has been a good week now since I did this so I’m pretty confident that this is a permanent fix.

Update. I’ve tried every technique possible to overcome this problem and still it changes my mobile me to a .mac address and as a consequence I can’t send any mail from my iPod because the smtp server is always out of whack with my rail address. I’m using a second generation iPod touch 16GB and the other thing I’ve noticed since installing 3.0 is that all the transitions between programs are incredibly slow. I just don’t think earlier models can cope with it. Come on Apple your own software plays havoc with your flagship cloud offering. Where is the patch?

I started having this problem as soon as I upgraded to 3.0. I use my mobile me on my MacBook with no trouble whatsoever so it’s not a problem with the mobile me servers. In my case my mobile me address keeps changing spontaneously to a .mac address while my smtp server settings remain mobile me. The result is that sending email is impossible unless I can change my smtp server to the ISP I’m using. This is not always possible so it’s very annoying

I have only started experiencing this problem since I updated to 3.0.

Despite deleting the account and re-adding it as well as trying Christopher's suggestion above, the problem keeps re-occurring.

Frankly all of the trouble I am having with .me is putting me off Apple in general - they really need to get their act together. I'm paying a premium for my iPhone and my email from Apple and they are not providing me with anything like value for money.

I never switched to name@me.com and continued using name@mac.com.

My reason being that name@me.com just sounds too self centered.

This isn’t an iPhone bug, it’s a probelm with the MobileMe servers. Was happening long before 3.0 came out.

I had this problem before 3.0 came out. Now that I have the update I don’t experience this problem anymore.

To clarify you account information should read:

Email Address: [yourname]@me.com Incoming Mail Server: [yournname].me.com Outgoing Mail Server: smtp.me.com:[yourname]

I had this issue. For me the solution was relatively simple. (1) On iPhone turn off Mail Syncing for your mobile me account. (2) Open mail settings on your Mac and change your (a) incoming mail server, (b) outgoing mail server and (c) email address to me.com. (3) Save changes. (4) On iPhone turn Mail Syncing back on.

I never had to turn off contact syncing or calendar syncing to correct this.
