It's not an iPhone-like slab, but it does ditch the Palm Pre slider (and Wi-Fi!) for a Centro-esque front-facing webOS form factor, and Dieter over at PreCentral.net has the full Palm Pixi Review up to prove it. His take?

The Palm Pixi is a tiny smartphone with enough features and elegance to woo even the most die-hard feature phone user, but current Pre owners will want to stick with what they have.

We're figuring that will apply to iPhone owners as well, but for new buyers, could it be enough for Sprint and Palm to compete with a $99 iPhone 3G, and all its apps, on AT&T? Check out the rest of the Palm Pixi review and let us know what you think.

  1. The Reptile says:

Good smart phone to get for your kids if you're on Sprint. It is in no way a threat to the iPhone 3G.

  2. mystic says:

    More last-generation thinking from Palm.

  3. cardfan says:

I thought the Pre was the iphone 3g's competition?

The only phone that will lose sales from the Pixi? That would be the Pre right now. Both target about the same market and the difference in pricing is insignificant.

Already having a portrait kb phone, Palm should've made a slab or landscape slider. The Pixi should have came later and definitely not as low end specced.

  4. masimons says:

    No wi-fi, how stupid !

  5. Ana says:

    Nein.

The poor thing is pretty fug.

  6. Macman says:

And once again another phone trys to compete with the all mighty iPhone and FAILS !!!!

  7. Rene Ritchie says:

@Cardfan: Being on Sprint, same as the Pre, makes that likely. Palm was likely contractually bound to do that, but getting on another carrier might have made Pixi break out more?

  8. Hikerinmaine says:

Definitely no competition to the iPhone. No wifi? I wonder who gets to lose their job over that blunder.

These other companies producing smart phones to compete with the iPhone is like watching American car companies trying to compete with foreign ones. They're so behind the 8 ball I don't know how they're still in business.

  9. cardfan says:

It would make better sense on another carrier but this phone would be competing with dumbphones at its price point. Only thing is..the Pixi needs a data plan.

Personally, i couldn't see paying the same premium monthly plan for a very low end smartphone.

It does seem to fit sprint the best with its cheaper plans. The pixi isn't something i'd choose to debut on one of the top two US carriers. I'm not sure a 7 or 8 month old 8gb Pre would be either. Would prefer to see a new high end Palm phone.

  10. On2Vegas says:

I think the cheaper 3G and Verizon's HTC Droid Eris (some very positive reviews) leave this pretty much dead in the water.

  11. cardfan says:

Walmart selling Pixi for 29.99? That's definitely dumbphone territory. One has to ask then if its even in the same ballpark as iphone 3G or Eris.

  12. Ed says:

You would think that after the criticism that Palm got for leaving out wifi in so many Treo models they would have learned their lesson. Apparently not. Idiots.

  13. KP says:

What's all that blank space above the keyboard for?

  14. RON JEREMY says:

Ron Jeremy says I don't know why everyone is comparing the pixie to the iPhone it's never been Mentioned as competition for the iPhone it's just another lower end offering from palm. Hence some of the lower specs. Wake up fan boys and relax.

  15. RON JEREMY says:

@KP Ron Jeremy says it's a touch area like on the pre to bring up a taskbar.

  16. XEGHAY says:

Remember: The omission of WiFi was a carrier stipulation. I'd wager my bets that GSM versions of the thing will have WiFi.

  17. appleking says:

for christmas that phone will fly off the shelfs

  18. Mange says:

Can't palm fail soon? It's better that way.

  19. dean wysocki says:

i like that little lightweight pixie for a easy carryaround isnt of my iphone brick, would be nice to get it on att or tmobile for the gsm mulitasking. I dont think its a iphone competitor, not ever smartphone out there needs to be.

  20. Phone for Work says:

I just switched over from the Palm based treo over to the palm pixi. I have 3-4 differant email accounts going 24 hours a day, and I only really use my phone for business. I actually loved my treo but it is dated and old. I opt for the pixi over the slide pre because I use it so much. My question is, does anyone have any takes on the pixi vs the treo pro? I want to have access to the internet (lets face it you could never all the treo web accessible) I really dont like how I cannot assign differant ringers to the differant email accounts, the charger portal sucks, and I am thinking of going back and getting the PRO.... My concerns, EMAIL Simple Web access at a decent speed.... Oh yeah, and to wake up the pre you have to hit the power button, and I dont like the slide to unlock it.. Are these valid issues? or me just being a baby? Any insight?
