Fox News “Confirms” Rumored Jan 26 Apple Event, Focusing on “Mobility”

Fox News’ Clayton Morris is upping the ante on the rumored January 26 Apple Media Event, not only saying it’s the real deal, but that it will focus on “mobility”:
I’ve spoken to a source inside Apple who confirmed a “big” event for January. While nothing official has been handed down from the notoriously tight-lipped company, my source took the Financial Times report one step further by saying this event will focus on the mobility space, meaning we’ll see something related to the iPhone/iPod touch product line.
An earlier than usual iPhone 4.0 preview to give developers time to go resolution-independent for an iPhone HD? A camera-toting iPod touch to p!$$ off everyone who got the camera-less version for Xmas? An announcement that Apple is taking itself fully to the cloud? Or just some iTablet/iSlate the entire interwebs have been gossiping about for years?
If you’ve Quantum Leap’ed or flashback’ed from this fictional future, let us know!
[Thanks to everyone who sent this in!]

If they’re right, that’d be awesome! I’m really looking forward to the new iPhone 4.0 and an early preview would be very much appreciated. Also, a tablet announcement wouldn’t be bad either…
My guess is multitasking, AVRCP and FM radio in a new software release. At least I am hoping for those 3 things!
Fox News?
It has to be iPhone related to steal nexus one spotlight.
I will say I hope it’s more than a preview to what’s in store for the new iPhone. We should at least have some type of update this month. I know everyone is excited as always for a new phone but the 3GS is more capabilities than it’s being used for.
On the software side, I think iPhone 4.0 will be shown off. Hardware, I think they’ll start selling a $99 3GS 8GB to phase out the 3G before the new phones are released this summer.
And of course we have the ever popular tablet. But I wouldn’t cross my fingers.
@Alex
Do they make an 8GB iphone 3GS?
And I’m excited to see what 4.0 will bring aswell.. here’s hoping it will be a lot bigger then last years, “big” update.
I’d like to define “Mobility” as moving to Verizon. Enough of the promises of improved service from AT&T.
either way I dont see the 3G[S] as a “big” update compared to other 1st generation phones that came out in ’09 ?”(i.e. Palm Pre & Moto Droid)
I don’t know if they would move to verizon this close to the verizon/AT&T war, I mean after this season of “idoesnt” and their Santa iPhone commercials do you really think the next wave of commercials would be “iPhone, now coming to verizon!”
I’m sure if they did switch, it would be in a couple years
Hoping for iPhone on ANYONE but AT&T. Verizon/Sprint would be SA-WEET.
All these people saying they want the phone to go to Verizon is just silly. Why in the world would you want a Iphone on cmda that cant handle voice and data. Unless you live in the sticks Att 3g service is blazing fast. I live in atlanta and here and in the metro area’s i get 5 bars of 3g service. I only drop to edge when I am travling in the middle of nowhere. I really doubt that apple would change the carrier that the iphone is on for the people who are living on the edge. most of civilization has 3g. now san franciso and new york obviously need some updating, I don’t live there so I cant speak on thse issues.
I hope we get a software upgrade like someone said earlier, even though the iphone 4.o will have hardware improvements. the current model has’t been fully utlized yet.
“my source took the Financial Times report one step further by saying this event will focus on the mobility space, meaning we’ll see something related to the iPhone/iPod touch product line.”
I’m not convinced that this refers specifically to the iPhone or iPod Touch lines. I still think it means a Tablet + data plan.
GoodGuesser 12:05pm Mobility can also refer to a tablet smaller than a MacBook and more capable than an iPhone or iPod Touch. Data only plan will allow this baby to work on WiFi and whatever 3G or 3G data plans are out there. That could makeVerizon rumors true, because a new Apple device running on Verizon 3G data with VoIP via connected iPhone (Skype, etc). This is one way to get voice service on Verizon without violating AT&T monopoly on iPhone itself! With MobileMe or Google Apps or equivalents, and the ability to iChat with video and run iPhone apps, this little beauty will use flash memory for OS and storage, like the iPhone, but starting at 64 GB, like the iPod Touch. With iLifeLite (Tablet Edition) preinstalled, and with MS exchange capability, it will be a killer product. Interface: Touch, Virtual Keyboard with support for Bluetooth alternatives, and speech to text, (Dragon?), this will be a most impressive business tool for office interactivity and presentation prowess on the go. Map my word.
@D.allen
not currently, but that’s what I’m predicting they’ll do.
I also forgot to mention that we will be seeing an update to the MacBook pro and MacBook air lines. =] good thing cuz I’m ready for a new pro.
Why would you want the iPhone on sprint?
Yes, fastlane, foxnews. Is that, a problem, for you ?
The problem with an Apple Tablet PC is the fact that they’ll probably charge like 2 grand for it so you can pay the brand. I’m waiting for the new Archos Tablet. at 500$ how can you lose? http://www.archos.com/
I hope with a new iPhone the 3GS won’t become insufficient or obsolete. This phone isn’t being used up to it’s capabilities yet. I would hope multitasking is a new feature added.
Good guessed has a point
HI THERE EXITED ABOUT THE 4.0 I GOT THE CAMERA LESS 64 GB IPOD BECUASE IT IS THE LARGEST FLASH MP3 PLAYER ON THE MARKET NOT HARD DRIVE AND HOPE THE TABLET HAS A FLASH DRIVE TOO OR SSD APPLE IS BIG ON FLASH WANT A SSD IN MY IMAC THOUGH
I have a 3g and my work phone is on Verizon. i travel all over the state of SC and i have to say that the Verizon’s map commercials are not true. i have more service with my Iphone than i do with my verizon phone. those of you who want a change to verizon really need to consider all of this. i wouldn’t know what to do with out my Iphone. as far as an update, i have to say i can’t wait to see what it is. i didn’t get the 3gs cause i had just got the 3g and figured they would have a new phone out this year. i would like to see the tablet as long as it is small enough to carry reasonably and the price isn’t outrageous. Apple has the best products on the market but they are pricey. i would like for ATT to get on the ball and open up tethering. i know i am all over the place here rambling on, come on apple give us a peek.
