The Wall Street Journal is wading into that whole Apple iTablet/iSlate thing, saying:

Looking to build on the momentum of its iPhone and iPod, Apple Inc. will unveil a new multimedia tablet device later this month, but isn't planning to ship the product until March, say people briefed by the company.

Now for the weird part:

Apple was working on two different material finishes for the device, one of these people said, though it was unclear whether the Cupertino, Calif., company was just testing the finishes or planning to come out with multiple versions of a tablet at different prices.

Plastic vs. unibody aluminum? Black vs. white? Adamantium vs. unobtainium? They care nothing about further elaboration, so we're left to wonder.

Still rumors of tentative schedules and obscure design elements is something, right?

Let's hope we get some tungsten!

  2. Gregg says:

I'm still trying to find a use for one of these things. It's going to be akward it seems like to me. Keyboard being on the same surface as the screen. I know the phone is like that but this is much smaller and easy to hold. Trying to hold the tablet and type on it's going to be weird.

    Zzzzzzzzz

If the matte one get's leaked, a Foxconn employee dies people - please don't leak either, it's a trap!!!!

  5. G says:

Haven't heard much speculation concerning business uses for this device. I agree, another media player isn't really necessary. But give me something to take notes, read PDF's, edit docss in the fly, give doc access to a cloud, then I may be interested.

  6. Steve says:

Gregg, what trusted source tells you the keyboard will be on the screen?

  7. jonar1us says:

i dont honestly see a purpose for the "iTablet/iSlate". would rather much see the NEW iPhone becuz Im startN to fall for the Moto Droid...

  8. OmariJames says:

This reminds me of when there where those leaked images of a supposedly Matte finish iPhone. Maybe that material which looks like the back of the 2008 iMac will be the back of the iSlate will look and feel like.

  9. Sully says:

I have an iPhone, I have a MacBook Pro, I have an iMac; why do I need a iSlate/iTablet? This is just the next "it" thing... Netbooks and Tablets are trendy- however they only serve the needs of few.

  10. JoBlow says:

@sully All of it depends on configuration.

  11. Macman says:

I think this tablet is aimed for students and people that have not used mac os. I see no point in buying one. I also would like to see another phone cause 3g is runing buggy. Might have to go back to blackberry.

  12. David Foster says:

Two different finishes? How about (1) matte and (2) glossy. This is consistent with the types of screens you can get on Apple laptops now.

  13. Druce says:

Does anybody remember from a few years back, Apple actually patented the use of ceramic, which provides a hard, scratch resistant surface without interfering with radio signals the way metal would. I wouldn't put it at a high likelihood, but I have been waiting to see them productize that one.
