Boom Town: Apple Buying AdMob Competitor Quattro Wireless

Boom Town claims several sources have confirmed that Apple is getting into the in-app advertising business by buying AdMob competitor Quattro Wireless for $275 million.
Since Apple currently dominates the mobile app space, bolstering their cut of profits with a cut of in-app advertising is likely good business for them. It's all about the eyeballs, and if those eyeballs are locked on iPhones and iPod touches, why let Google gobble it all up?
If rumors are true that Google bought AdMob out from under Apple (much like Apple bought online music streamer Lala out from under Google), then switching targets to an AdMob competitor couldn't have been entirely off the radar, now could it? (Especially with -- yes more rumors -- of Google now turning towards Spotify for their music fix).
Apple and Google certainly look to be getting even more up into each others business, and that should make the expected Nexus One announcement later today, along with Apple's expected January 27 event, and the whole of 2010, a lot more exciting!

This is slowly turning into a battle of three giant tech behemoths. I expect these next couple of years to be an epic battle of innovation, new software, new technology, and the crowning of a new tech king. The King is Still Microsoft, with Apple breathing right down their neck and Google skyrocketing behind Apple. But when the dust settles I expect Apple to Take the crown.
Looool at the picture
nice!!!!!
Interesting if they take 30% of the ad revenue, leave the rest to the developer - nice and easy for developers to setup.
Funny picture!! Looking forward to the tablet announcement on January 27th.
By the way, I think you misspelled Quattro in the title?
@frog very niceeee - a much cleaner cut. And dangerous for the traditional dinosaur media agencies
But apple getting into the in-app advertising business for applications they have to approve might be just a little too convenient for the FTC and the Justice Department.
This could lead to trouble.
Yea. I recently realize that admob was the company advertsing on some of the the apps. Makes sense for them to do so.
2010 will be a good year.
@icebike - good catch. The FTC will look at this no matter how open the ad options are for developers. There will likely be some guidelines laid down that dictate what Apple can and cannot do but like all things in tech those rules will be relevant for about 6 months before they innovate their way around them.
