Nexus One Video Review -- The Competition

I had a chance to use Dieter's Nexus One during CES 2010, and while I've shared my thoughts already, Android Central's Phil Nickinson has just put up a complete Nexus One video review of his own. While I am jealous at how often they (and he!) get new devices to play with, I'm not jealous at how much reviewing he has to do. Phew!

Check out his video, then come on back and tell us what you think -- how does the Nexus One measure up?

    Do I detect a wee bit of jealousy? I don't understand how apple "fanboys" feel like they betray apple just staring at "competition". I get that you have great appreciation for iphone, but still... ur not married to it (phone contract excluded). my 2 cents of opinion.

  2. Bshecko says:

    @Maitaco

    since no one has posted above you I have to assume you're directing the comment at the author of the blog post. What I don't understand is how people seem to forget this is a blog dedicated to various information about...IPHONES! It's kinda the job of the poster to be a "fanboy" (whatever that means).

  3. Omari James says:

    +1 @ Bshecko maitaco ... -1

  4. cardfan says:

    Looks like a mess from watching that video. Taps don't register. Even the buttons below the screen take multiple attempts.

    Nice screen if you can tolerate that OS.

  5. macboy15 says:

    Hows the battery on that thing? Hope its better than the droid! Yes bshecko you are correct. @maitaco You may find this strange but to some of us how you say "fanboys". Apple is more than hardware and a os. That'smy 2 cents of opinion. <<< What ever that means.

  6. Rene Ritchie says:

    We're an iPhone enthusiast site, so the day the writers aren't enthusiastic about the iPhone is the day they stop writing here.

    That said, I state plainly above that I am jealous at how often great new Android devices come out. There's a huge benefit as a customer to have 1 iPhone a year (same accessories, no buyers remorse just 2 months later, etc.) but as a gadget geek who also needs to fill site content, getting dozens of devices is a thrill, especially when they're a mixed bag and you can rag on some of them.

    So, if Apple put out 12 iPhones a year, t'would be fun (and tiring!), but I'm still happy with the iPhone 3GS... until the 4th gen comes out!

  7. macboy15 says:

    @rene Well said my friend.

  8. lightningr1 says:

    It really must be hard to write for this site when information about a future iphone is kept so secretive by apple.

  9. ciocpa says:

    I've gotta say, I'm not impressed with the Nexus. From all I've been hearing about it, I was really expecting a lot more...

  10. Macintosh says:

    Very nice UI! It makes my iPhone 3Gs LOOK so outdated with just my freaking icons!!!

  11. Macintosh says:

    Apple give us options like the Nexus One! I'm really sick and tired of the damn plain old static icons. I'm also tired of just APPS all I hear are a billion apps. What the heck am I gonna do with a billion apps????

  12. fastlane says:

    Agree with cardfan, it's a mess.

    They're trying too hard to top Apple with overkill animations. I really think this device could be as awesome as the iPhone if they'd laid off the interface showboating just a bit, and keep it cleaner (and fix the touchscreen issues). The photo app is just nasty.

    Sorry, Maitaco... no jealousy here (not yet, anyway).

  13. neil brimelow says:

    The nexus one looks great, but that's what I like about competition. Apple will most certainly up the ante with the 4G.

  14. Steve Woz spokesperson says:

    The touch screen on the Nexus works equally well as te iPhone. Same with the capacitive navigation at the bottom keep in mind Phil was managing a camera while trying to lean out of the shot and use a touchscreen phone. Touchscreen works very well. Android is awesome and apple needs to impiment some form of multitasking beyond what exists now. Other than that both are great phones and it is okay to like more than one device.

  15. iPhone 4.0 says:

    Looks pretty half-baked. What is the deal with the lack of screen responsiveness? I can see lag too so even with a 1ghz proc Android is still in need of fine tuning. Plus only a few hundred Mb for apps? Seriously?

  16. Desmond says:

    I think that Apple has had more than enough time. We haven't had a software update in like six months. I hope that we get more than just a preview of what is to come at the end of the month.

  17. Jerry says:

    @Rene .. your Smartphone round robin of Android was pretty pathetic... you seemed like you fear Android instead of focusing on the OS .. you started talking about what you think Google might do with the OS .. that's what you don't like about it...

    @ Everyone who's talking about the Android UI ... The great thing about Android is that you have different UI's .. if you want a simple elegant UI Get and HTC sense Device.. The Nexus one will be called the HTC Bravo with sense UI .. it's coming out in March... The stock Android UI is great for people who planned on making a lot of deep customization... and people who plan on hacking.. the great thing abotu Android unlike the IPhone is that you have CHOICES .. oyou dont like the nexus one UI get teh sense . it's pretty simple.. @ MACBOY... The droid's battery is the best for android .. it lasts longer than the Palm Pre and the Iphone 3GS by far...

  18. Jen Nelson says:

    I agree with @cardfan -- the multiple attempts at pressing icons to get them to open would really piss me off after a while. He even said he'd been using his for a while and STILL has trouble getting used to its non-capacitive issues.

    Personally, I'm in love with my 3GS and any updates and tweak Apple makes will just be icing on the cake.

  19. Brian says:

    @Jerry the thing that sucks about Android is all the phones don't get updated to the new system, your always getting left behind. That is for people that just bought their phone last month, that would suck. It puts you in a position so you don't know which company will allow the OS to update.

  20. macboy15 says:

    @jerry lol How is it good for there phones to have different ui's? So if I got a android phone 4 months ago and they came out with a new one with a better ui. I'm screwed. Ya great. And about the droid do you have one or just guessing about the battery. My gf's brother had one for a week the battery sucked. Funny thing is the having 3-4 apps open at the same time is not good on the battery. He charged it 3 times on christmas day. He no longer has the phone.

  21. Jerry says:

    @MACBOY ... The problems with Rene and you is that you guys are trying to compare - an operating system to one single device with an exclusive OS - to no avail....

    The objective of Android unlike the Iphone is not to have you buy every single handheld android device that comes out... Even HTC for example is not trying to have their own consumers switch device every 6 months..

    and that's the problem with Boy Genius and a lot of these reviewers .. they get many android devices and they expect them to be the same .. when that's not the intent..

    HTC want all their phones to be the same .. They'd like Hero consumers to eventually upgrade to a Bravo... but they don't necessarily want G1 consumers to upgrade to Magic.. they just offering different options for keyboard lovers... and for touch only lovers...

    That's the beauty of Android.. You're not restricted to one form factor ... the devices are different both outside and inside...

    Someone who likes to have all these social sites on and ready to go might be interested in Motoblur.. but one who likes simplicity and ease of use (IMO more user friendly than the Iphone) might want to go with SENSE ...

  22. Jerry says:

    @Brian..

    That is truly overstated ... for example .. someone with a sense UI running on 1.5 already has many of the features taht 2.0 presents... Google simply added the features that HTC had on Sense to their stock android.. and called it 2.0 ... there are some underlying improvements like 3D but nothing a Hero consumer should worry about..

    I think Google should release new versions to manufacturers and release the sdk to devs before releasing it to the masses.. but as far as 2.0 vs. 1.5 .. it wasn't that much of a difference..

    by no means I'm saying Android is perfect... but you guys should stop spewing out cliches about Android that you hear Iphone bloggers talk about ... they dont know about the OS ...

    Fact is most of the things wrong with Android... Bloggers rarely talk about ... but the things that you hear from bloggers are mostly BS ..

    IF you need to know what's wrong with Android... I can tell you..

  23. Rene Ritchie says:

    The objective of Android is for Google to always have a non-walled garden to offer their services and attract our eyeballs. It pushes technology so that those services work better and we want to use them more.

    The iPhone is the embodiment of Apple's business model. Android is one of the embodiments of Google's.

  24. Jerry says:

    @ Rene ... I'm sure Google love to have an avenue to offer their services.. that they can control.. but in your Android Round RObin ... you overstated the point instead of focusing on the platform and the device..

    Android IMO is bigger than just offering services... Google sees a bigger picture.. if you think about it.. they don't monetize much of these services on your device...

    Google makes money almost every time you use the internet.. Google is trying to bring Smartphones to the masses.. because they know with more people being exposed to smartphones more people will be online.. and with their ads all over the internet..they'll be raking it in..

    Google would love to android to get more and more popular.. but they're already happy with what Android has done so far.. because it forced the industry to go certain way...

    As soon as ANdroid was announced..Nokia had their own open alliance... China had their own Open MOS .. everything became Open this and Open that..

    Google wants to standardize mobile services in a way that benefits the internet.. which will in turn benefit them..

  25. Brian says:

    @Jerry

    I need to know the problems with Android, you offered. I need some ammo!
