Hi Anthony, and thank you for your interest in the IK Multimedia mobile products.The iRig Mic is not a toy. On the contrary, it has a build quality on par with other professional handheld microphones, with a rugged metal housing, electret condenser element, and windscreen. A primary objective to the design we pursued is the cable allows you to move about with both the mic and iPhone, unencumbered by bulky and unwieldy cabling.

I live in NYC and haven't had any trouble with my phone out of the ordinary... Because there are some notorious dead zones I've encountered with every phone I've used. I really do think it us the iPhone itself and not the network so much as my blackberry worked fine, but of course that wasn't a bandwith whore like the iPhone.
But I honestly don't think verizon is picking up the iPhone, 1. It's a gsm phone, and they'll have to create a seperate phone locked to verizon and 2. What's verizon going to do with the droid and droid eris?? The whole basis of their campaign was knocking on the iPhones faults.. Would be a stupid turn of events in my book, and the other thing people seem to forget is the iPhone OS is pretty old now, hopefully this summer something new comes out to change the scene up a bit. But we shall see in the next day or two about what happens to the iPhone..

ATT has provided me great service in NYC for many years on my Blackberries. The iPhone struggles here. ATT has gotten a bad rap, it's the iPhone that has calling/connecting issues.

I work one half mile from an ATT 3G tower, and I cannot get phone reception in my office. I've complained to ATT about it, and they say they can't guarantee coverage. That doesn't sound like a good plan to me.

@Keith- I'm sorry to hear that. You are probably one of the few who did research and still got burned. That does suck- but I highly doubt your situation represents the majority of the people who claim to have so many problems with AT&T. That being said, I would have immediately taken my iPhone back to the AT&T store and complained about the false claimed coverage in your home area. They probably would have let you out of your contract if you had done it right away.

@Karen.

NO network was ready for the Iphone. Saying that they should have been totally prepared ahead of time is just ludicrous. Firstly, no phone in history was ever so demanding as far as data, secondly AT&T couldn't be absolutely sure it would take off and be the success it has been, and thirdly, you have to first have to have the reason to up the network. The iPhone gave them that reason and I think they have been doing a fine job.

@MrPl:

If you bought the phone knowing the service would be poor in your area and a “work in progress” then why complain about what you knew was going to be just that- a work in progress?<<

I bought the iPhone and switched to AT&T having looked at their 3G coverage map on a street-level magnification and saw that they considered my entire neighborhood to be solidly covered by 3G. When I got the iPhone home, I found several-block-wide patches of EDGE-only service and some areas of no service at all.

AT&T has problems but if you took all at&t's iphone traffic and put it on verizon, it would most likely crash.

PLUS: what verizon cals 3G in the map commercials is no comparison to the speed of at&t's, even though it is more abundant

I've had iPhone since launch and am a current owner of the 3G. I held out on the 3GS in hopes for a better iPhone in 2010. But I have had no major problems with my AT&T service. I've been with them since Cingular and I commute between Los Angeles and a small community, Mariposa,ca. It's a 4 hour drive each way. The only major problem areas I have are in the known "dead zone" between Mariposa county and Merced County. A place not even Verizon has coverage. And the grapevine.

Those are the only places I know I will lose service. To me AT&T is reliable. And the flexability with what I can do with a call is also important. The ability to switch callers text, and be on the internet is very useful and important at times. I use it to be on a call and use maps to get around. Absolutley essential for me. I also use it to guide people from home sometimes. Lol.

To me having good service these days is only half of the game. I also want a network that can be flexible and keep up with my needs. I need a network that has a more complete and well rounded service, not just based on cellular or data coverage alone. And since sprint or t-Mobile isn't an option, verizon is too limited with my needs. And I don't care how much coverage you have, if you can't be a well rounded provider, I won't use you. AT&T. Has been the best and more complete as a provider of both cellular and data that suits my needs. They are very flexible and just work for me. I have minor problems, sure the coverage could be better, but AT&T has my reliability meter on perfect for me.

Wow! Karen, you have some serious issues.
Anyways, AT&T is a good network, and it has struggle with too many bandwith and many other smartphones bandwith. I believe their carrier is at a good shape, and so are their plans, as for what they offer. Verizon has too many restrictions, and their data plans are pointless. If verizons 3G is twice as slow as AT&T's, then imagine a current verizon iPhone, and three or four times the slowest 3G connectivity.
Also, people should be happy that we're this far into technology, and that we actually get some service out there. Not everyother carrier is special. Give it a break people, be happy with what you have.

Who uses their iPhone to make calls anyway?

But, seriously, AT&T knew what they were getting themselves into or they wouldn't be paying Apple what they are for each phone. They got more than they had hoped for, but that is not the only reason you may get crappy service.

As an end user, all you can do is continue to complain/petition AT&T in the areas that you're not receiving the service you think you should.

If you don't like it, take your ball and go to another network -- just realize you'll be saying goodbye to the iPhone for the foreseeable future.

iPhone won't be going to Verizon tomorrow, and people constantly overlook the fact that AT&T can't just point to an area and say "let's put towers there" it's ridiculous what it takes just to get approval to build towers in a certain area...

I hope the iPhone does go to Verizon. So all the people whining about bad service can get off of At&t and free up the download speeds for me. I've been with at&t for about 6 years now, and since the iPhone I've notice the downgrade in my service. Before then, At&t was the best. I can't wait for everyone to just get off of At&t so I can get back my great service.

People. People! Calm down. There are lovers and haters for both AT&T and Verizon. And yes I used to "and's" in the last sentence. <---this one too. The fact remains. We'll all find out tomorrow if mighty Verizon gets the iPhone. If they do then fine. Jump ship if you don't like AT&T. Go to Verizon and test those waters. I expect a full report about your user experience. Now.. On to the folks quoting how AT&T has not invested enough or their coverage is abysmal(spell check caught that! I always thought it was abismal. uh-buys-mal?) anyway there are many other "or's". You ever hear the statement "pictures or it never happened"? Well I need pictures or some solid hard proof that AT&T is Not doing everything they can. Not some quote of a quote you read somewhere on the interweb. All this nonsense that Verizon had first crack or some other lacky crap you come up with.... it's b.s. Unless... you have proof. My experience with the iPhone has been extremely pleasurable. <-- read into it what you want. I love my iPhone.

All I know is when I had a bLackberry on verizon, crackberry.com was full of people bashing the big red and switching to Att. Complaints about how controlling the service was, lack of costomer support, so on. I'm not saying that verizon sucks, Im just saying people are going to find problems no matter what. That being said I switched to an iPhone and Att service about 6 months ago and could not be happier.

I have no complaints with AT&T. My iPhone 3G is always on 3G and never waivers (central NJ and Ft Lauderdale, FL). I've tried Verizon and had many dropped calls. I guess it depends where you are. Will be interesting to see how things play out when Verizon gets the iPhone!

@RJD

Apple is deflecting their own part of the blame. iPhone hardware just does not handle the switch between 3g and Edge very well. That’s why BBs on the ATT network don’t have the same problem and don’t drop calls. The hardware works.

This is very true. Its the switch to/from edge that is the problem. This fact has been reported many many times over the years as google will show you.

Interesting thing about this is Verizon has no such switch-over, (its not GSM, and it will likely be a different chip manufacturer) and so when the iphone shows up on their network it will be much smoother, and ONCE AGAIN lead people to blame AT&T.

Still, AT&Ts coverage is pretty abysmal.

@MrP I agree 110%.

@IPaladin At&t has problems in two major cities San Fran and NYC. Which are being addressed. As a matter of fact every carrier has problems in NYC. All carriers have great and bad spots in this country. AT&T is great where I live and verizon is horrible (upstate NY). My gf has them and has coverage problems all the time and is switching when the contract is up. And like mr.p I will defend AT&T as they are the best carrier for me. I would like to see verizon get the iPhone. As it will get some people that have better coverage with verizon off AT&T. And decrease data usage for people in problem areas. But don't see it happening anytime soon.

I am happy with my iphone yeah I get dropped calls a lot but that's just par for the course. When I call AT&T someone is there to listen to my complaint and they do everything in their power to resolve it.

I think for what they have they are doing a good job.

No one is perfect and I think AT&T knows they have work to do and they are working on it and it will only get better.

We are just so spoiled with our high speed broadband at home and we want that exact same speed on our iphones. That will happen but it will take time.

I will stick with AT&T if the iphone should also go to Verizon as I don't care for their business policies.

I do use the internet and talking at the same time and it is nice when I am on the phone a SMS can come through or an email can also be received while on the phone.

I can't believe the amount of people on here defending AT&T and dissing Verizon. Fact of the matter is that in most places the Verizon network has been tested to be faster even though AT&T's network does have a higher theoretical maximum. AT&T so underinvests in towers and backhaul that they have no chance of achieving their theoretical maximums. I, like most people, don't care if Verizon is CDMA as opposed to GSM. I want a phone that works. Where I live, AT&T doesn't have 3G and in a lot of large cities they don't have 3G that works. Those numbers are simply too large to ignore. It's a massive profit increase for Apple to release a Verizon iPhone, period.

As far as talking and using the Internet at the same time, most people would sacrifice that tech for a phone that works in a New York minute.

I have had very limited experiences in NYC and I only lost signal in the subway. I for one am a very happy AT&T customer and they've provided reliable and fast 3G service where I live. Count me in the "and still provides a “great experience” for many of their customers." pool!

Ever wonder WHY Verizon had first choice? AT&T got the second offer most likely - I'm assuming here - because they have the second largest network after Verizon.

People have a right to complain about their network providers, just as folks have a right to complain about roads needing repaving or widening. If no one complained, companies would assume that their customers are happy. AT&T has many unhappy customers because it doesn't provide a CONSISTENT level of service for the iPhone. I'm sure you'd be irritated if you're driving your new car down a newly paved highway, only to find yourself off-roading for a few miles before getting back onto some fresh pavement. The same concept applies to AT&T.

i think the spike in sells to was because the 3g was more affordable to the masses. the orginal iphone was more of "niche" product. it was to expensive for most of us to even consider. when the 3g came the iphone exploded. so then the last two years att has had to bracw their network for this. also doesnt all the jailbroken phones who thether suck tons of bandwith? i don't have knowledge to how that works

Has anyone ever seen the grand opening of an Apple Store? People are lined up around the block. The announcement of a new Apple product generates rumors for weeks. There are Apple rumor websites all over. People were lined up all over to buy the iPhone. For anyone to say that no one expected the iPhone to be as big as it is is disingenuous.

Even more disingenuous is AT&T's inability to put back its resources into its infrastructure. Let's give them the benefit of the doubt — they were somehow caught unaware of the demand. They've had time and years now, collecting money from a (substantially) higher-priced plan in which to build out a better 3G network. So... what gives?

BTW... Verizon is CDMA... AT&T is GSM. So... Apple wouldn't have gone with VZW because it means it would have had to have made a special phone just for the U.S. and paid Qualcomm a special CDMA fee.

If you bought the phone knowing the service would be poor in your area and a "work in progress" then why complain about what you knew was going to be just that- a work in progress? My problem isn't with you as an individual it's with the constant bashing of AT&T when you have many alternatives. If anything you should be frustrated with Verizon who denied to carry the iPhone and who probably provides the service you view as good in your area. Of course many people,myself included, feel Verizon would have struggled with the demands of the iPhone as well.

Apple is deflecting their own part of the blame. iPhone hardware just does not handle the switch between 3g and Edge very well. That's why BBs on the ATT network don't have the same problem and don't drop calls. The hardware works.

This is Apple and ATTs dirty little secret and they cover for each other. Turn 3g off and see if you have less dropped calls. Just don't expect either ATT or Apple admit it. Neither one wants to take the heat or expense of fixing it.

OK, well I'm here, and I've had a problem or two. I live in NYC, where the problems are reported to be most extreme, and here's my story. Compared to the boring Nokia brick I was carrying around before the iPhone, my service and user experience is 1000% better. Until the start of this year, while internaet downloads occasionally felt slow, I never had a dropped call. In the last 30 days, the situation has reversed - 3G data speeds are noticably improved, but Ive had my first dropped calls. This is a zero-sum game. Everything is not possible and life will always be a catalog of trade-offs. Get used to it. All of the ads are misleading at best, and AT&T's doing as well as anyone could under the deluge of iPhones. I only want other carriers to get iPhone so we can laugh about the irony of their pre-iPhone claims while geting the benefit of spreading out the load.

Karen your analogy is true, however if each of those 1000 guests eat enough for 5 people they would defintley run out of food even though you made preperations for everybody to get second and thirds. I am just saying that most iphone users surf and play all day on their phone using tons of bandwith. am I saying att is perfect......no. but i have had a great user experience with my iphone on att. I surf and talk all the time. couldn't imagine not having that feature. I also use google maps when I drive so i can use that as well when I am on speaker or bluetooth. I had verizon for 4 years I hate how they control a phone with all their bloat ware. If att loses its excusivity I just hope they keep the phone. I for one am staying with att.

I'm tired of all the complainers- all the people that say things like "well if AT&T knew they couldn't handle it they shouldn't have accepted the bid to be the iPhones carrier" are you an idiot!? How many iPhones have been sold? How many subscribers has AT&T gained? That would have been a real smart move- ala- Verizon! Dumb, dumb, dumb. Part of the reason the other carriers have spent more on upgrading service areas has to be due to their ability to understand that the more they can brag about the quality of their service being better the more they can rag on AT&T and try to compensate for their inability to offer the most popular handset in the world. I have been an AT&T/Cingular/AT&T customer since the begining and I have never experienced many of the problems people claim to have with them. And yadda yadda ya I know "but you don't live in one of the poor service areas!" - your right! But whoever out there that bought the phone either knowing the service wouldn't be great- or not doing enough research to know the service would suck in the area- it's your own damn fault! Go get a Verizon Storm (lmao- and good luck with that-)

All you guys complaining are crazy. If iPhone where on any other network you would complain about something. Verizon has a good network but is much slower speeds of 3g and is not going to get any faster b/c the tech is maxed out. People are so stupid

Well this is my piece on this. When I had my iphone I did not have any major problems with service maybe a dropped call here and there. All the carriers have problem spots. Now that I use a blackberry I have had better reception in areas where I had little or none. So maybe its not all AT&T's fault.

Apple is doing themselves no favors, defending the terrible, terrible service we get from AT&T.

Chances are they are still contractually leashed to that sinking ship, so they don't have a choice.

Too bad for them.

@Chrisr: If AT&T wasn't prepared to handle the millions of users, then they shouldn't have accepted the contract. If I own a catering service, for example, and I can't handle a wedding for 1,000 guests, it would be wrong of me to accept the bid. And with Apple's success before the iPhone (iPod, iMac, etc), AT&T can't say they didn't know it was coming.

AT&T does have more heavy users, but they are not only not keeping up with the iPhone demand, they are not keeping up with other carriers. Over the last 4 years (the iPhone and its ramp up period), AT&T has invested almost $5 Billion less than Verizon on wireless infrastructure than Verizon both in absolute terms, and $50 less per subscriber when normalized across their bases. Even Sprint has outspent AT&T.

More heavy users + less investment in infrastructure == easily foreseeable problems.

They're right. Just like when there's heavy traffic on a highway, people are going to complain and look for somebody to blame. I believe AT&T is doing a decent job of keeping up.
