Netflix iPad app updated to support video output

Today the free Netflix iPad application was updated to support video output via Apple’s optional dock connector to VGA adapter. This lets you watch your video on a much larger display. It's a feature I have been waiting for since the application was available and a much welcomed addition to this app!

To watch instant content you do need a Netflix subscription and if you plan on using that VGA adapter (available from Apple Online) to watch an iTunes video you can forget about it as Apple hasn't enabled that for anything other than their A/V composite and component cables.

If you give this a try let us know how it goes in the comments below!

    iPhone version wouldbe nice

I've used the VGA cable and component cables for iTunes videos encoded by Handbrake...maybe it is just Apple's own videos that don't work with the VGA adapter? Additionally, video out works with Paper Desk. Other than Netflix, those are the only non-core iPad apps that utilize VGA-out so far (I consider YouTube and Keynote to be "core" apps).

  3. Brian says:

Yeah, where is the iPhone version? It can't be that much different than the iPad version, downgraded video for iPhone.

iPhone version... PRETTY PLEASE Netflix, hook us up!

  5. Art VanBurenBoy says:

Give us the iPhone version. No need to wait till June 25th.

Guess I'm the only one to try this? The one who kinda hates Apple? lol

I foolishly bought the Apple Component cables for TV output. The resolution obviously for Netflix is 480p i.e. far less than HD, but we already knew it couldn't do HD output (lame).

The Netflix app itself plays, but scrubbing caused it to freeze. Video quality was watchable but nothing great. Overall, pretty disappointed.

    And still no iPhone app...

  8. Brian says:

I wonder if the cable I bought for my iPod classic a few years ago will work with the iPad? I dont see why it wouldnt. Its the same dock connector and works fine with the iPhone and iPod. Gonna have to give this a try after work today!

  9. Rob says:

I have the iPod Classic Composite cables, and Netflix works wonderfully.

Are we "sure" that the iPad will NOT output 720P video on a VGA or Component cable? We DO know that the iPad supports "H.264 video up to 720p". The screen may not be 720P, but the ZuneHD screen isn't 720P either yet it still can output that res.

Can they at least release an iPhone Netflix app (official one) for now so we can at least log in and check our account and que???

  11. Quasarn says:

Netflix is coming to the iPhone and iPod touch. Type this on the search bar, Netflix coming to phone and iPod touch"

  12. Art VanBuren says:

Netflix is coming to the iPhone and iPod touch Netflix is coming to the iPhone and iPod touch Netflix is coming to the iPhone and iPod touch

    ok, now what ?
