Apple now hiring: iPhone and iPad antenna engineers
Apple has three job listings for iPhone and iPad antenna engineers, all posted June 23, just following the launch of iPhone 4. Their missions:
Define and implement antenna system architecture to optimize the radiation performance for wireless portable devices.
Whether the timing is coincidental, crucial, or just comedic given the antenna reception issues many users have faced when holding iPhone 4 on the lower left side… we’ll leave for you decide.

Looks like there prob won’t be an iOS update or fix anytime soon
Hehehehe Mr Jobs give some jobs
Experience required: Understanding of the physical and electric properties of rubber and composite materials Phone case design
rofl what happened , did they fire all their old ones?
@ Dan: They had none… Hence the antenna issue of the iPhone 4
Damn i don’t know if i should return my phone and go back to my 3gs or wait it out and see if apple does something.
OMG people, just put a damn bumper or case on your iPhone 4′s and you won’t have to deal with reception issues! You don’t have to go back to older models or return the iPhone 4.
It’s good that Apple is doing this though, at least we can have piece of mind for next year’s model.
@BNV6, I couldn’t disagree with you more. I’m not having these issues but some people are and Apple has clearly demonstrated they are not going to make it right so people should return their phones, it’s s defective product.
Seeing that Apple knew about this beforehand, they should give out free bumpers or something but because Apple is a publicly owned company, bottom line comes first, customer service second. And don’t you think for a minute that’s not true.
maybe the current (former?) apple antenna engineer offed himself like the Foxconn employees….
I can duplicate the problem exactly… on my 3GS. Should I return it????
So obviously there’s radiation emitting from any cellular phone, but does that mean that when we block the signal from “holding it wrong” the iPhone 4 is worse for us than any other phone?
Anandtech.com is your friend. Go read their review and learn something.
Apple’s antenna systems team has to get larger as they support more and more things. Some are complaining that iPhone 4 only has 802.11n support at 2.5 GHz, not 5 GHz. Well you’ll need an antenna about half as short as the current one for that. Then there is T-Mobile’s 1700 MHz data band if they want to go there. Then there are CDMA bands of who knows what they are. (450, 800, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz?) All antennas have to be designed for each band and fitted into the phone.
We will run out of spectrum eventually.
Bnv6 I don’t want to cover my beautiful phone with a bumper. It’s so pretty the bumper takes away from the look. It’s like putting a cover over my Rolex watch. It’s just not an option.
sorry everyone apple kind of meant to hire these guys about 7 months ago but we were kind of busy bashing adobe and playing on our ipads.. My bad
written on my nokia n900
im guessing they will have to address it on later productions of this model. maybe it’s worth sending it back and letting them sort it out. Thats what i’m considering doing.
@Lubsy
you can’t recreate this problem exactly on your 3gs , it’s much worse on the iphone 4 by orders of magnitude, check macrumours for their analysis.
@Zero Credibility You wanna bet I can’t? When I hold my 3GS it does the same thing some peoples iPhone 4 are doing dropping signal slowly. And it doesn’t matter what hand I do it in. And people that say it does it in one hand and not the other are lying morons. My iPhone 4 does not do this at all and from the comments on blogs and forums around the net a lot of people are not having these problems. This post is bogus there hiring antenna people? Ya sure they are.
@Macboy15
I’m guessing the ’15′ is your age, because if you spent 3 seconds to click the article you could have linked directly to the job postings on Apple’s web site.
And I’m sorry, but you can’t do “the same thing” with a 3GS because it doesn’t have an exposed antenna. Signal degradation with the whole phone gripped isn’t really the issue when simply touching ONLY a tiny 1cm patch of the band alone will stall data and drop calls.
Mine is fine:-) no problems at all thank you lol
Heres the solution!!!: http://www.mysmartrend.com/news-briefs/news-watch/possible-fix-found-apple-iphone-4-signal-issue-aapl
easy fix…even though apple told me there might be a software update fix later also….
Actually some people have been able to do it on a 3GS so who knows what the problem is.
I’m giving even odds Apple takes all 1.x million of these phones back and replaces them or issues bumpers to everyone.
This design/model will be the shortest lived smartphone ever released. A redesign emerges by Christmas.
But going from “It just Works” to “Don’t hold it like that” as the company motto has got to sting.
Moto, HTC, and Samsung engineers are pounding their desks and gasping for breath and howling in laughter. Even Marconi knew better than to touch the antenna.
@Dorito:
Exactly. It’s like those people who cover their furniture with plastic so it’ll remain in a condition that nobody will ever see, or enjoy.
I had a 2G for a year (sold it in mint condition). I had a 3G for a year (sold it in mint condition). And a 3GS (selling it soon in mint condition). Never had cases on any of them. If you drop your phones, find some medication for your uncontrollable spasms.
Why are people dropping their phones? Are they dropping their babies and young children? Are they dropping their food and drinks and silverware in restaurants? Are they dropping their work at their jobs? Are they constantly falling down staircases? Why are only these people’s phones always falling?
Everyone on this blog argued for weeks about how the new iPhone looked, and now they’re all covering them with giant glow-in-the-dark rubber bands anyway?
Doesn’t make sense.
All iPhone models should function properly by themselves the way they’re designed with no accessories required. Period.
Wow the fanboyism here is ridiculous. Just put a bumper on it? Are you serious? Are you serious? If this was ANY of smartphone out(God forbid an Android device), there would be a post here ripping it shred from shred about how subpar it is to the iPhone.
Look, I am about as pro-iPhone as anyone, but they way Apple is handling and covering this up is ridiculous. Lying to the public that there’s no design flaw, and then giving up the run-around and boot when we call in makes me think it must be the shareholders chiming in on this one. This is so unprofessional. Let not let them get away with people.
As for the fanboys who are saying that can’t get their iPhone 4′s to do this, but their 3G/3GS’s too? I have 1 3G and 2 3GS’s in my house and I cannot replicate this problem, hardly. But with the 3 iPhone 4′s in here I can make their bars drop like doo doo. I live in an excellent coverage city with full bars 98% of the time. Who’s fibbing?
@nill No I’m 39 years old but that’s beside the point. And yes I’m having the same issue with the 3GS and i’m not the only one smartguy. There about 30 YouTube videos of people showing this if you don’t believe me. Also in macrumor threads. Ever since installing ios4 this has been a problem. I posted this problem before the iphone4 came out. Everyone said I was insane. Not so insane now I’m I.
@danny what does being a fanboy have anything to do with issues on different phones? Lol and I’m being called a 15yr old? It’s been proven that both the iPhone 3G/3GS are having the same problem with reception that some iphone4′s are having. And yes some people are not having these problems. I myself have the problem with the 3GS. But for the life of me no matter which way I hold the iPhone 4 I cannot get the thing to drop no more then 1 bar. So I’m at a lose for words what the problem is.
Put the Zagg strips on the sides you can’t even notice it at all unless you study it and then it doesn’t even take away from the looks. I put Zagg strips just to protect it and keep it from scratches, you don’t have to cover the screen and back. I don’t have these issues and didn’t have it before I put the Zagg on. I have been enjoying my iPhone 4 and it works freaking great and has a 2 to 3x faster downloads and 3x faster uploads with not one dropped call since launch day (I have saved speed test to prove it). So either you can keep complaining, try to fix until Apple has a for sure fix or take it back. Because really I’m sure there are a few thousand having problems but there’s probable over 2 million enjoying there new iPhone 4′s by now.
Should you have to put a case or Zagg on? No but you only have a couple of choices at the moment, why not enjoy it. I think there’s are probable a big group of people also that just can’t get past it drops a couple of bars but it’s still working great. It sucks for the ones that have legit signal drop offs, take it back or get a case or Zagg cover. Zagg I will take weekly payments for advertising for you.
i’m pretty angry about being kept in the dark about this. It would be great to get an iphone 4 that doesn’t drop bars next to one that does and work out if it is area specific or hardware specific.
Out of curiosity, what is the call quality like for the rest of you? I have a belkin case on mines and still lose bars, but I have yet to drop a call, where as my 3Gs always dropped calls. Is the loss of bars affecting any of your calls?
@Sara:
Stop posting that Sim card issue. This is NOT a sim card issue and that article has already been debunked.
I can produce the problem on my 3GS and 4 at will.
To address the ip4 problem either:
1) Put a case or bumper on it 2) Use a 2 inch piece of clear Scotch/cellophane tape over the bottom left antennas 3) Return the phone for a refund
Guess I’ll have to keep my iphone 3g for just a little bit longer…oh joy. I haven seen this problem in person and can replicate it on the iphone 4. Sad really that something like this slipped through. It’s a cell phone first and foremost, and without reception you lose the main component of a cell phone, making calls! I can’t believe the excuses and things people say, use a bumper, hold it different, etc. Why should I have to buy an ugly bumper just to make my cell phone work? Why should I have to hold it different? I hold my iphone in the most comfortable position for me..in my left hand. This phone just wouldn’t work with me at all.
My 4 doesn’t have this problem whether it’s on Edge or 3G. Worked fine before I even had a case on it.
All you haters are a bunch of morons and if you were standing in front of me id kick you in the face and smash your phone. F’n grow up. And go back to school. All this dropped call BS is just that, a bunch of BS. Its not the rest of the worlds problem you dont know how to use a phone and cant understand that physically holding ANY phone affects its reception. I hope this is the last post i have to read about this, and the last time i have to shutup a bunch of trolls and hypocondriac whiners. Babies.
Icebike, Engadget’s “debunking” of the SIM issue was a poor example of journalism. They didn’t even do the right thing, which would be to return the faulty SIM to AT&T.
Through this site I managed to unlock my iPhone 3GS 4.0 http://unlockiPhone40s.com
