If this is indeed a 3x3cm Apple touchscreen (multitouch screen?) then what's it for? New Apple TV? New Apple TV remote? New MacBook Pro multitouch trackpad with display? iPhone nano? iPad nano? Secondary display? Unicorn HUD?

Give us your best guess!

  8. Emre SUMENGEN says:

Yeah, what makes it "Apple" touchscreen? What I see is just A touchscreen, without a label :)

Does it taste like Apple, maybe?

  9. Matt says:

    Unicorn HUD!

  10. Garrett says:

Biometric security. Probably to read fingerprints for Enterprise Mac Book Pro's. Next thing you know Apple might add docking station ports to MBPs.

  17. lemontree2004 says:

Some of the other pictures shows "Apple" printed on the cable.

  23. smchrist2 says:

three CENTIMETERS? That's TINY. you can see all the pixels?

  24. SockRolid says:

iPod nano "virtual click wheel." Existing nano is 38.7mm wide, so this would be just about the right size to replace the click wheel. Why? So the controls could always be rendered with "play/pause" at the bottom. Right now, when you turn the nano on its left or right side, the controls are rotated 90 degrees to the left or right. This is the kind of thing Steve hates, so it must be fixed.

  25. JohnW says:

Could it be a touch pad for the back of the iPhone/ iPod touch to scroll with the index finger of the hand that is holding it?

  26. SockRolid says:

@emre - "Yeah, what makes it “Apple” touchscreen? What I see is just A touchscreen, without a label"

Other sites show an enlargement of the ribbon cable. It reads "Apple 2009".

  27. SockRolid says:

What it's NOT. Screen for Apple Remote? No. Remote needs to be usable without looking. Video screen for new iPod nano? No, too small, and too square. iWatch? iDontThinkSo.

  28. m1n0r says:

A notification screen for next-generation iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad. Perhaps with some home button functionality.

  29. Jason D says:

    iDontKnow

  30. RedShirt says:

Can you really do much with a 2cm x 2cm touchscreen?

  31. Dave says:

I just noticed the little white square on the home button of my iPhone and ipad is 3cm by 3cm square. Maybe a notification light/screen for the home button in future models?

  32. Dave says:

Or it could be a touch sensor for the home button to make more use of the home button. You may be able to tap or press down the home button in different sequences, it'll open it up for functionality.

  33. fastlane says:

    @Dave:

You've got yourself one humungous home button there.

  34. RedShirt says:

Maybe an LCD button that has a graphic that changes according to the app or whatever? Sort of like the oled keyboard where you could have different graphics for each key.

  35. frog says:

Whatever it is, it's sure to be magic and revolutionary!

  36. Mark3 says:

Guys from Slashgear are saying it could be some kind of watch.

  40. Mondo says:

  41. OmariJames says:

  42. NyxoLyno Cangemi says:

    Two words: iPad Nano

  43. Spanishcop says:

I'm not very tech-ish... but curious if a thumbprint reader can evolve from a touch screen? Say for example to unlock a phone, macbook. Would be nice to see this on the back glass of future iphones where you can have the owner's thumbprint unlock the phone for use instead of a typing your 4 pin number or key phrase.
