iPod nano not iPod OS, not iOS, something new?

Is it possible the new iPod nano isn't running iOS, but isn't running the old iPod OS, either? The latest firmware has hit Apple's servers so developers are tearing into it and here's what Steven Troughton-Smith had to say on Twitter:

The nano codename is N20 it appears; also labelled as "1.0" of the OS. Definitely not iOS

Rusty Mercury also says it's running on a Samsung S5L8723, a step up from the previous Samsung 8730.

So what is this OS 1.0? something new? Something hybrid?

iPod touch 4 early review round-up
  1. The Dude says:

    It's something new.....

  2. frog says:

I hope they allow some sort of basic apps on it one day. Calculator, that type of thing

  3. Erik says:

With the price point they have on it, they should have at least designed it to do video playback.

  4. Freiteez says:

I think a big seller here will be if they really come out with a way to wear it as a watch. Who else would be able tk say "my watch plays music"

  5. "Rusty Mercury also says it’s running on a Samsung S5L8723, a step up from the previous Samsung S5L8723."

I'm guessing one of those is not supposed to be S5L8723?

  6. Mitchell says:

@Freiteez Who ever owns the nano G6 :)

  7. Johnnyreb says:

Step up to the same S5L8723? Don't get it.

  8. Geo Coldz says:

    It's running Mac OS X 17.4

    Who cares really?

  9. Redshirt says:

Well, if there are ever going to be apps for it, the developers might not be able to use the current programming frameworks for it. So that's a concern for them...

  10. Steve Woz says:

It is just iPod OS with new shortcuts. That is it. Nothing more nothing less.

  11. Robert Najafabadi says:

I wish it is running iOS x because it would be funny to see someone hack a safari app on it. I think it is cutie and wants it do not care what OS it has.

  12. Jason says:

I don care that's for sure

  13. Dennis says:

    It's running Nano OS 1.0.

  14. SockRolid says:

I wouldn't expect Apple to allow independent developers to create apps for the nano. The screen is way too small for things like the virtual keyboard or for presenting lots of text. But Apple might release their own custom apps for it as they see fit. Maybe even really simple games, somewhat like the original click wheel iPod games.

  15. Dennis says:

Nano OS 1.0 is similar to, but also different from, iOS. If it's running a different processor from the A4, it must be mostly different. Because it's the first Nano with a touchscreen, and the first square 1.54" touchscreen, Nano OS 1.0 must be substantially different from previous the Nano OS, whatever that was called, which was presumably similar to, but different from, the iPod Classic OS, which shared the non-touchscreen screen and the control mechanism, but had different but similar features. Inasmuch as it does many but not all of the same things as the previous Nano, it has certain similarities from the previous Nano OS.

  16. Agostinho says:

Why would you want to play games on such small device?

  17. SockRolid says:

At any rate, it's clear that Apple has positioned the nano far below the touch. There were only two ways to go with the nano: bigger touchscreen like a miniature iPod touch or smaller with fewer features so it wouldn't threaten the touch. Apple chose the latter, most likely to avoid cannibalizing sales of the more expensive touch with its full iOS. And that could help sales of both the nano and the touch.

  18. SockRolid says:

@ Agostinho - "Why would you want to play games on such small device?" I'm not really sure. But I'm sure that Apple already has an answer, and it's probably "You wouldn't want to, so we won't release games for the nano." Games on nano are probably possible but still unlikely.

  19. Ant says:

U want to wear a watch need to be recharged every day????

  20. cardfan says:

    Useless without a jb

  21. Robert Najafabadi says:

Oh no does this mean it is running samsung touchwiz or BADA (joking of crocus) :)

  22. Keil Miller says:

I don't care. It's a nano, and built for only one purpose.

  23. Dennis says:

There's no point in trying to figure out what direction Apple is going with the Nano. What's more notable is that Apple has felt pretty comfortable experimenting with the design of the Shuffle and the Nano and putting out different design concepts for both of those devices nearly every year. Even if people like it, they might change it just because. They have probably noticed that they can sell more of these relatively inexpensive, low capacity mp3 players if they keep switching it up. It's not like the iPhone or Touch, where people are trying to upgrade to the latest features, the latest CPU uptick, etc. to keep up with the app store releases. If Apple has 95% of the market in small capacity mp3 players (made up number) that people use while working out or women buy because they come in different colors and they're purse-friendly, Apple is better off changing the design frequently. It's almost like a fashion accessory.

  24. Mike T says:

Why do we have to put a spin on everything Apple does. Its just a nano with a touch interface, nothing more.

  25. Websyndicate says:

Cool but I don't care about the iPod nano too much. Good article still. Keep up the good work tipb

  26. Keisuke says:

I love the assumption that no reader here is a woman and must be a market we discuss tangentially

  27. Paul says:

It still shares the ios framework. It's basically an mp3 player with some nice features. iPod touch is beyond the mp3 player category and is now viewed as a personal media device which play games, e-mails, etc.

  28. mbp1915 says:

What is the Samsung 8730, is it a netbook or something?

I'd also like to know if the new iPod nano has Bluetooth built in....... That'd be very cool :-)

  29. Adam says:

I have to believe that the OS at least uses Core Foundation and other aspects of Cocoa. It might not be a full implementation of iOS but I highly doubt it is something completely different.

  30. maddin says:

Maybe its a new cpu build by cyberdyne systems ;-) i think its a A4 based ARM like other nanos before. Its nothing more than a mp3 player...what means, no jailbreak is needed. Why should apple use a expensive cpu inside the ipod, when it is definitely not necesary.

sry for my english, i'm from germany ;-)
