Apple announces replacement program for iPod nano (1st gen)
Apple has announced an replacement program for the first generation iPod nano following potential safety risks that have arisen due to issues with overheating.
This issue has been traced to a single battery supplier that produced batteries with a manufacturing defect. While the possibility of an incident is rare, the likelihood increases as the battery ages.
Apple recommends that you stop using your iPod nano (1st gen) and follow the process noted below to order a replacement unit, free of charge.
Note: This battery issue is specific to the iPod nano (1st gen) and does not affect any other iPod.

I'm shocked as well, Put my iPod Nano serial in and they're sending me a box to send it back as well, I'm going to wait and see what they're sending for replacements before I send mine back, waited on release day to buy this iPod Nano.
Thinking samething, maybe ipod nano1 will be valuable 1day
Thanks for the heads-up. I have 1st gen Nano and apart from the battery not lasting as long as it used to (well, it's over 5 years old) it is fine but I'll take a new one thanks:) My feeling is that the replacements will be refurb ones but that's fine with me.

Talk about timing! My Nano only lasts about 90ish minutes now and I was considering getting a replacement. Filled out my form first thing this morning. I am very curious to see what they will send as a replacement.

You will get the exact same type of iPod. Look it up on their website
Didn't see that anywhere, just saw it say it will be a refurb. Plus, what are the odds that they have 6+ year old iPods lying around, or the parts for that matter.
So they're gonna manufacture more ipod nanos 1st gen just for that????
After filing out the form they are saying that apple will refurb the ipod after you have sent it to them
They are not going to refurb a bunch of 1st gen iPods its not cost effective. They will send you a newer iPod it may not be the latest gen but it will be no more then 1 or 2 gens old.

Whooooohooooo!!!! I have a cracked screen and it's been in hibernation mode for a long time. Just plugged it in to back up my old tunes and my wife said why are you using that? I told her we get a replacement since the battery is defective. She said, who cares you have so many iPods anyways. She does not understand, when you get something free from apple you need to take it. Hehehehe

I saw that too, so I just called the number in the email. The guy I spoke to told me that that part of the email is part of their standard legal agreement. He looked up my specific nano by the serial number, and he said that it definitely qualifies for the replacement. He also told me that they would never actually charge anything/run a diagnostic that can be charged without detailed written consent. If you are still nervous, I would say call them yourself, so they can look up your specific nano and hopefully reassure you

1st gen nano sitting in the draw doing nothing...Apple will send me a box to return it to them. Now, if they refurb it and send it back...good, it can go back in the draw. If they send me a new unused 1st gen nano...good, it can go in the draw and then off to the museum in a few years time. If they send me a latest gen nano...good, it can go in the draw and wait until our iphones or touches stop working.
Apple wont spend money setting up a supply line for a small number of parts. They also wont want people flogging new ones on e-bay. They will do what they are legally obliged to do and nothing more
@ jasdoop here in PHILIPPINES.. i've just drop by apple service center in Connecticut, San Juan. They are charging me a fee of 300php if my nano is not defective.. but from what is stated above for as long as your ipod nano 1st gen serial no is included in the batch of purchases dates your then entitled to a full replacement, not necessarily specified that it to be a defective one
I still haven't received the shipping box... Should I just send it on my own ?
I got mine 2 days and I live out west
I hope the little boy got the therapy he needed after that experience.
