Daily Tip: How to playback video on your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch in slow-motion

The in-built Apple video player app on your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch has a hidden feature that some will find very handy. It enables you to slow down a video including the audio playback. This could be very handy if you are watching a video tutorial or following along to a cooking recipe.

  • Open up a video you would like to watch
  • Play the video then select pause before the part you would like to watch in slow-motion
  • Hold down the fast-forward control button whilst in a paused state
  • The video will now continue in slow-motion as long as you hold your finger on the fast-forward button

That is all there is to it, you will now be able to view your video in slow-motion.

FYI.This does not seem to work with video recorded on the iDevice. Anyone else seeing this?

Darran says:

Doesn't work for me either on my iPhone, infact the controls look completely different to the iPad in the tutorial, you might wanna have a re-think Chris!?

Dave Saunders says:

Works fine on my iphone 4. You have to hold the fast forward button for a second before it will though. Thanks for the tip.

Laslo says:

Are you trying it with video you recorded on the device or on video that you added from some other source? The controls only show for videos that you uploaded to the device. Not videos shot with the iphone.

Darran says:

It would seem that it only applies to video uploaded to the device.

Mattobeast says:

Nope. Doesn't work for the iPhone 4. Don't even have a fast forward button that I can tell.

Works from iPhone 4 on YouTube

Fuad99 says:

Works on my iPhone 4 w/o a problem. The only downside is that the playback control remains on the screen, which, along with your finger, takes up a fair amount of the small screen real estate.

LNG says:

Ha ha. You deleted this. Why not just update it? That's hilarious.
