Google takes on Game Center with Google Play game services

A significant announcement for game developers emerged from the Google I/O keynote in San Francisco this morning: Google officially launched Google Play game services, a framework to help facilitate social play, cloud-based storage of saved games and multiplayer gameplay. What's more, they're taking it to iOS - a challenge to Apple's own Game Kit frameworks, the technology that enables iOS games to tap into Apple's Game Center app.

How to recommend games to friends with Game Center

For most users, Game Center is all about matching up with friends and competing for rankings and checking out leaderboards. It's not much fun though if you don't have anyone to play against. If you've found a particularly cool multiplayer game in the App Store that you think a friend would like, Game Center makes it easy to tell friends about it complete with an App Store link for them to check it out.

Apple launches new status page for iCloud, iMessages, Siri, and other services

Apple has launched a new status page for it’s stores, services like iMessages and Siri ,and iCloud that is far more granular and informative than the previous version. While the old page was simply a list of status messages pertaining to iCloud, the new page contains a board with a section each for Services, Stores, and iCloud. An indicator, either a green square for ‘Normal’ or yellow triangle for ‘Issue’, gives the status of each individual service, such as iMessage, Siri, or Mail.

No skin in the Game Center

Speaking of successes and failures, I dislike it when it feels like I care more about an app or service than the developer or platform owner. It sets off huge warning bells and sends me looking for alternatives. Apple is starting to give me that feeling with Game Center. Since Letterpress launched, a game that depends entirely on Apple's Game Center application programming interfaces (APIs) for everything from matchmaking to gameplay, Game Center reliability has taken a nose dive. For several hours this weekend, I once again had more Game Center errors than successful turns.

iMessage is down. Again.

Apple's iMessage service, their iOS and OS X SMS- and MMS- like service, is currently down for a lot of users. It's been going down fairly regularly as of late, though not for lengthy periods of time. Game Center, Apple's online gaming service, has also gone down or suffered from poor service over the last week.

Everything goes down. Google goes down. Amazon does down. RIM goes down. Microsoft goes down. We go down. But reliability is a feature and if something goes down or suffers from poor services too often, or even if perception starts to give people that impression, it's a problem.

Letterpress by Atebits review

Letterpress is deceptively simple. A five-by-five grid of letters is laid out on the screen. You and your opponent have full visibility to the board, and must make words out of the letters provided. As you do, those letters are colored in—blue for your letters, red for theirs—and each move steals letters back, affecting the letter-count score at the top of the screen. Things get slightly trickier when the letters on the four sides of a played letter are also played in the same color, when the lock-in effect causes the center to go darker. In this case, the letter can still be played, but no points transfer. Each word must consist of at least two letters, and no word can be re-played.

Game Center for OSX to offer cross-platform gaming with iOS

One little gem for gamers at WWDC today is a new Game Center for OSX that will allow players to play with friends on iOS when games are available on both platforms. Combined with pixel-for-pixel mirroring that was also announced for the new version of Mountain Lion, this is going to be pretty sweet. The WWDC demo showed CSR Racing playing on an iPad against a MacBook.

iOS 6: Higher hanging fruit

What will Apple bring to iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad with iOS 6? What will be the "tentpole" features to take Apple's mobile software into 2013? With WWDC 2012 coming in just over a week, and an iOS 6 beta widely expected to come with it, now's the perfect time to take a look and see what makes sense.

We've already seen some of what is likely coming in iOS 6, including a new version of the Maps app that replaces Google data with Apple data. It wouldn't surprise us in the least if it brings turn-by-turn navigation with it either, by way of Siri...

But what else could Apple bring with iOS 6?
