How to watch iTunes Extras on your Apple TV

iTunes Extras are like DVD to Blu-ray movies extras that play right inside iTunes on the Mac or Windows, and on your Apple TV. They can include director's commentary, deleted scenes, bonus scenes, making-of documentaries, and other features. Not every movie has iTunes Extras, but for those that do, here's how to find and enjoy them!

How to access iTunes Extras on the Apple TV

Unfortunately, there's no way to tell if a movie has iTunes Extras just by looking at its poster thumbnail. You have to go to the detail view. That means it's sort of like the memory game. Hopefully that'll change in the near future.

  1. Click on the iTunes Movies icon on your Apple TV Home screen
  2. Navigate down to All Movies (or a selection of your preference)
  3. Navigate to the movie you want to watch
  4. If the movie has iTunes Extras, you'll see the blue badge at the top right
  5. Click on Play
  6. Select Extras
  7. Navigate to the extra you want to watch.
  8. Enjoy!

Note: We've started a list of movies with iTunes Extras that show up on the Apple TV. Check it out and if you've found additional movies, please add them!

This process does not seem to work for me. I had to go into 'Movies', then select the banner up at the top which was like an ad for the iTunes Extras feature. Then, if one of the movies I owned (like Django) is in there, I can click on it and the extras are there. If I just click on that same movie in my Purchased section, the extras do not appear.

Also, for some weird reason, not all of my purchased movies are in my purchased section. For instance, I own 'The Avengers', but it does not show up in my purchased list. VERY frustrating.

Has anyone else had this problem? I tried signing out and back in, but this did not help. would rebooting the Apple TV possibly fix the problem?

I have the exact same problem. Playing movies on the Apple TV through the Movies -> Purchased section will just play the movie, not the iTunes Extras interface. Same goes for playing movies via Home-Sharing from iTunes on a Mac mini (fully-downloaded iTunes Store movies). The only way for me to access iTunes Extras on my Apple TV is selecting a movie directly from the other Movies sections -- Top Movies, Genres, and Search.

Thanks for the tip. Will try that this weekend.
Of course, I'd prefer "Hey Siri: play iTunes Extras for Looper."

Ok so - Disney Planes on Apple TV has a problem. When you click play it sends you to the iTunes Extra but there is no option to play the movie!

Haha. I just had same exact issue with Planes. I had to go to the screen with Play/More buttons and I hit the Play button on the remote. This worked. Seems they left the "Play Movie" button off the screen.

I have not had any luck with any method of trying to access iTunes Extras. I hope that changes soon because that is a feature I would like to have.

Note that itunes extras are for 1080p HD only. Was wondering why I could not see the itunes extras to snowpiercer. I bought it in SD. I changed in the settings to HD, but apple decides to not make you able to purchase your movie twice (I agree with this), so you still see the SD version when you go to that movie. In SD I didn't see the itunes extra icon for movies in the itunes extra curated list. After changing to 720p, still no little blue icon in the same list. Change to 1080p, all of a sudden the icon appears for he movies I did not already purchase in SD.

This update doesn't help me. I download the itunes extras to my computer.lim wanting to see the content under my computer" then movies....then I'll be happy. Having to stream it from the cloud..when it's already downloaded seems redundant
