Netflix coming to iPhone and iPod touch

ipad-abc-netflix-3

Netflix for iPad is already in the iTunes App Store, but how about some love for iPhone and iPod touch users? Not to worry blogs Steve Swasey, their VP of Corporate Communications:

Terrific response to our news today about Netflix on the iPad. For those of you asking whether Netflix will be on the iPhone and iPod Touch: We wouldn't invite you to dinner without planning to serve dessert. In other words, we're working on it so stay tuned.

How soon is "stay tuned"? Likely not soon enough, but at least we know it's coming.

Awesome but will it work over 3G?

JonnyPancakes says:

They're working on it?! Still?!
They pumped one out for the iPad, but the iPhone, which is 3 generations ahead, have yet to see it...
Now I know how the older brother feels when the baby gets all the attention >.<

Sean says:

Nice! Though I'm sure it would probably have a wi-fi only restriction. Dont think 3G could handle all that.

Alex de Soto says:

Do they still require that you buy into the physical deliveries? I'd happily pay for a subscription for Web only delivery as I have a Bluray player, a Wii and an iPhone.

Zay says:

Can't wait for this, as of now I use Netflix instant on my xbox 360, and it works great, the ability to use it on the fly would take my couch patatoing to another level.

DrModem says:

I don't see what takes so long to produce a smaller version of the same app.

Mrjr says:

Why is there a picture of the abc app?
Yeah. I would almost definitely sign up if iPhone support comes. Or when I buy an iPad, whichever comes first.

HungWell says:

It's official. The iPhone is definitely the stepchild.

reptar. says:

That's pretty cool but I would rather have abc first. Netflix streaming movies are really bad and lame. Except for a few random good ones

Freiteez says:

Great news! I bet they set it up to come out with the new iPhone in the summer so I bet we will have to wait a few more months.

@ Alex de Soto.
for $8.99 a mointh you get free access through your pc/imac/laptop/ps3/xbox360 and soon iPhone. why wouldnt you want the delivery as part of this plan? after all only 30% of ALL their titles are available for instant view,,, when it comes to new releases, it does take a while for them to appear on instant watch,,, for $9/month I think its a great deal,,,

Leo says:

@art.. I agree.. Can't beat the price and have it on all those devices.. I love it.. Can't wait for the iPhone version!!

I would bet the iPad has seen one before the iPhone are twofold:

  • Because it was a huge marketing coup both for Apple and for Netflix that it was available first for the iPad on its opening weekend, which means it would be coming very, very soon, or a bit later if:
  • Whereas the iPad can handle 480p or 720p without breaking a sweat, Netflix may need to downsample its on-demand library for serving to iPhones, whose slower processor may not be able to handle the full rate and whose smaller screens render the differences in bitrate irrelevant.

Yes, the iPhone/iPod Touch can probably handle 480p just fine, but the 3G network could not. Perhaps it is wishful thinking, but Netflix would land a big blow against blockbuster online and other rivals by being the first to stream anywhere over 3G. The delay may be to re-encode content and otherwise establish licensing and infrastructure to stream lower quality versions over 3G connections.

Schrutefarms says:

I know from personal experience that the 3g signal if decent can handle netflix in high quality. So there should be no worries about that. Although more than likely AT&T will restrict it to wifi only. So... Yeah... Cough miwi cough......

adam says:

@Reptar. - check out their streamable TV shows. A decent amount of good shows, both domestic and imports, are streamable. There are even Starz original shows whose current season is streamable. The new episode of "Sparatacus: Blood and Sand" is available Friday morning, when it doesn't air until that night.

Martin says:

I can't get enough of netflix. It's going to be fantastic. I doubt the 3G capability, but I'm always connected to a hotspot. Either way, I want it!

Trex says:

I'd rather they simply make an app where I can search Netflix and organize my Queue. How about the simple stuff first, eh?

AJ says:

Do it now! The I can sell my lame Roku box on eBay!

Chris says:

Yes just what I wanted Netflix is like so coool dude....Can't wait...

SAME HERE

Gary says:

@trex
There is a 3rd party app, Phone Flix, that ties to your Netflix acct. Lets you add/delete and rearrange, browse movies. someone mentions a movie to me that sounds interesting, I pull out my Iphone and add it to my netflix que.

Dexter says:

As Gary mentioned, PhoneFlicks is very well made and it's been in the app store for over a year now. It recently lets you even manage your Instant Streaming Queue.
