Redsn0w (0.9.6 Beta2) updated to allow Custom IPSW installation with Windows

Redsn0w -- the lightweight, multi-platform jailbreaking, unlocking and customizing tool for the iPhone 2G, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, iPod touch 1G, iPod touch 2G, and iPod touch 3G -- has been updated to 0.9.6 Beta2, which allows Custom IPSW installation with Windows. Missing from this update is iPad and AppleTV support, which is currently supported by pwnagetool for OSX, but word is that chpwn is working on a windows version of pwnagetool.

Redsn0w can be used to install custom IPSWs that will keep your baseband firmware from updating and allowing you to unlock with ultrasn0w. Redsn0w works by putting your device into a special DFU mode which is required for installation of custom IPSWs.

The iPhone Dev-Team has also posted an update on redsn0w+limera1n fun:

Were you waiting for a Windows version of custom IPSW installation or are you waiting for iOS 4.2? Let us know...

@Greyfell tinyumbrella only works with iphone4... Iphone 4 users dont have a problem with that but 3g or 3gs need to use redsnow or pwnage tool to preserve baseband...

@Ananth if you have that baseband means you already updated to 4.1 and the baseband was updated also in simple answer: No... U already updated baseband and they are no turning back...

Thanks @Iboricua. So as of now there is no chance for me to unlock that baseband right? I can jailbreak though using greenpois0n.

@Ananth yes you are correct, you can jailbreak but not unlock for now... wait till 4.2 comes out that dev team supposed to be releasing the new unlock and it could have the unlock of your baseband

I have an old iPhone 3G i want to give to a friend. I haven't updated it in forever (3.1.3, baseband 05.12.01). While I have jb'd it before, I've never unlocked it. She needs it unlocked. So should I just jb it and unlock it with redsn0w? What about any of the other jb/unlock programs? I shouldn't update the firmware, correct?
