Sports Illustrated Tablet Concept Video (Oh Hai Apple!)

Sports Illustrated has thrown their hat into the ring of media properties racing towards a tablet (or mythical iTablet) delivery system for the future. This is part of Time Inc.'s initiative, produced by Wonderfactory.

Apple, of course, has yet to announce an iTablet, but that's not stopping the declining old-world media companies from getting themselves ready... just in case.

[Thanks to McLaughlin for the tip!]

wow. too complicated, but it'll be a dream come true ^_^

Omari James says:

I don't give a rats about that magazine but I do like the idea. Especially the semi interactive feature to predict that will happen during a baseball game.

Zachary says:

Very neat concept and I really like the interactivity, but why would I pay for this when I can just go to the website? HTML 5 and other tools should allow web pages to become better destinations and devices like this... while pretty, don't seem worth it.
Just my two cents. I'd probably still buy one.

StatCoder says:

Why would you put together such impressive interactive content and use a photograph of someone's hand to demonstrate touch gestures? And, a mirror image for the other hand at that?

Greg Braddock says:

It's beautiful...I knew once I saw one of these in action I would want one.
@Zachary, this would be useful for somebody like me who is interviewing models all day, walking up and down sets and still needing to communicate. It's better than an iPhone/blackberry and more transportable than a laptop. It's not for everyone and I think Apple will make a HUGE mistake if they don't get in on these.

Hellpop says:

Seems to me that these companies making all the concept videos may know something that we don't. Just like he negotiated with the music and film industry, Jobs has probably laid the groundwork with the print industry to provide subscriptions on iTunes on launch. You don't have the editor of a magazine make a concept video unless you know it's going to be a reality. I don't think the iTablet is mythical anymore.

Victor says:

This is a nice gadget. I'm looking forward to throw away all paper newspapers.

avt says:

Pinch to zoom was used. :)

jtp says:

You know there are other "tablets" out there being developed besides the mythical "iTablet". Like the Crunch pad........

61Butte says:

Only SI could make this item look so boring.
God.
I want one. Many times the iPhone/iPod touch are too small for extended viewing, and the laptop is too big.
This, as Goldy Lox would say is just right.
Bring it on.

fastlane says:

If listing all the things I want in a tablet... books, newspapers, and magazines are dead last.

CS says:

That is hellacool. I would so buy one on day 1.

Orion2021 says:

Can't wait. This device will fit the nitch perfectly. (Geek warning).... Now I won't have to envy Picard and his desk tablet he was always reading off of.

Statikzx says:

I think it looks pretty cool. Being a reader of a lot of magazines this would be right up my alley. The interactivity alone gives them good reason to charge a premium for the content, though. One thing I do hope is that they don't make the periodicals proprietary.
NOTE: The date "2010" at the end makes me me think this is imminent.

Bear says:

It's funny they show the person just flicking through the advertisement. My bet is you'll be forced to view ads for about 30 seconds before looking at real content.
@statcoder, they used a digitally drawn hand instead of a real one because the device and probably the app don't actually exist yet.

Ghop says:

@Jeff
I couldn't agree more, you took the words right out of my mouth.

IGenius says:

"but why would I pay for this when I can just go to the website? "
Did the demo show anything that cannot be done currently with a website? Anybody know the answer?

fastlane says:

But there's no real keyboard for the hopelessly inept. How will they ever type on it? Will they continue pushing their fingers into the glass until it cracks? Will they need instructions, or an explanation of simple physics?

Brian says:

Wow. Why would you take such a huge product or demo and completely bastardize it with a creepy hand. I realize they weren't demo'ing a live product, but they went through the motions to make the whole production, why wouldn't they at least make the hand animated?

Al says:

wow...just wow...another game changer from your friends at Apple. Of course, this means that all content producers will need to be on board with this level of content. Amazing stuff though!

I am looking this post and thinking of it’s theme and trying to know what is this post about. adsfasdf
