AirPlay direct rumored to be coming to iOS 6, iPhone 5

AirPlay currently requires an existing Wi-Fi network in order to stream media or mirror content from an iPhone, iPod touch, iPad, or Mac to an Apple TV or speaker system. This makes it more cumbersome for non-technical users, and less convenient for temporary situations like guests or traveling. Something like Wi-Fi direct, which would allow device-to-device connections would be a simpler solution.

Joining all the previous rumors, the upcoming iPhone 5 now looks like it might be getting the Broadcom BCM4334 radio chipset. The BCM4334 comes complete with much lower power draw for Wi-Fi, support for Wi-Fi Direct transfers, and Bluetooth 4.0, among other things.

Apple Bringing Wi-Fi Direct to iPhone in 2010?

Apple has jumped on the Wi-Fi Direct bandwagon, which means we could see the technology introduced into the iPhone and iPod touch as early as 2010. What is it and what does it do? It basically lets devices connect peer-to-peer for data exchange, similar to how Bluetooth currently works. Or, if we understand it right, imagine the Remote app controlling your iTunes or Apple TV, but directly, without the need for shared router in between. Says AppleInsider:
