Tim Cook unveils new Apple employee benefits at Town Hall staff meeting

Tim Cook has apparently unveiled some new Apple employee benefits at yesterdays Town Hall meeting. According to 9to5Mac, the meeting was all about giving something back to the people who worked so hard to put Apple where it is today; one of the wealthiest businesses in the world.

Cook announced that Apple employees will soon be given $500 discounts on purchases of new Macs and $250 discounts on purchases of a new iPad. The new discount program will officially kickoff at some point during June 2012. A major caveat is that Apple employees may only utilize the opportunity every three years and employees must have been working for Apple for at least 90 days.

The discount on Macs does not include the Mac Mini models. Previously Apple employees were offered a discount of 25% on Mac models so this improved scheme should be welcomed by most.

Tim Cook unveils new Apple employee benefits at Town Hall staff meeting

Once every three years? Wow. People buy a new iPad every year, though! Macbooks would be a perfect three year cycle.

Yeah, I'm not sure how their medical benefits are, or if they have any. I'm sure they do. But $500 off a new MacBook or iMac is still pretty awesome! :D

That's pretty weak for a company that has $97.6 BILLION dollars cash in the bank you think they could stand to take $1 billion and divide it equally amongst all 60,400 permanent employees. ($16,556.29 per person). Or take the top 20,000 employees, the ones really that are doing the R&D and actually engineering and split it among them. ($50,000 each).
If I were an employee I would personally be pissed off with this meek offering. They should just give away their products to their employees. Considering that this company wouldn't be in the cash position their in without these people, a mere $500 dollars is like a rain drop an ocean.

I would be content if they gave any of those profits to charity. Why go to the extreme of saying give away all their profits and let all their employees go? If this was a bank everyone would be up in arms that they have so much money they should give back, or the airlines charging more for bags and saying oh they make millions why they charging me for this, but since its apple they get a pass? This scream hypocrisy to me. Apple is doing the exact same thing and no one says anything.

I was being facetious... THEY came up with the technology and they pay their employees and provide benefits (I assume). Everything else is fluff and to say that giving a $500 discount isn't enough, because of the money they make, is rediculous.

I still wonder why no one brings up apple in the big bad corp disscussion. They give next to nothing back to the community, make almost no charitable donations, and i am sure they are getting tax breaks. Sure they may not have needed a bailout but they still arent being a responsible buisness giving back in the amounts they should and could. Great they announced the educational stuff a few days ago, but that isnt going to help the schools that need it most. How many inner city families do you know that can afford a used ipod classic never mind an ipad. I have friends that work full time in well paying jobs that cant afford an ipad and have to get the cheaper and just as useful cruz type tablet.

Your comment is a very good one !! But !!! You are wrong !! Why should Apple give more than they already do ? They are a very smart and responsable company !!! If a parent wants to give his kids an iPod, but is too expensive just get them an pm3 player !!! I whould love to have a top of the line BMW but I have to content myself with an KIA !!!

@Brad F, you realize Apple also pays these employees a wage and this is a perk of working for them. They shouldn't be given the world just because the company had a record breaking 1/4. I'm sure 99% of the staff appreciate this gesture...

@Jared M, Google gives it's employee insane perks because they realize it's their employee's that are making them the money, not some invisible hand. Apple certainly wouldn't be hurt by giving back a larger slice of the pie to it's workers; I just think they could have done better given their cash position. I used dividing up a billion dollars anecdotaly to prove a point, but I don't consider it "giving your employees the world" when you have enough money in the bank to where you could feasibly buy your own country.

It's a good perk for the grunt employees in the stores. The highers ups don't need these and already enjoy better benefits.
My shares keep going up and that's all i care about.

These "perks" are embarrassing...or should be. The employees should get a free Apple product of their choice, at least. $97 Billion....sheesh!

WHY APPLE? YOU HAVE ALL THAT MONEY AND YOU CAN'T HELP THE EMPLOYEES, WHO NEED IT MOST.. I WORK FOR APPLE AND IT ABSOLUTELY SUCKS. WE MAKE 9 MISELY DOLLARS AN HOUR, HAVE NO COMMISSION OR ANY INCENTIVES, HAVE NO HEALTH CARE OF ANY KIND. HONESTLY HAVE NO EMPLOYEE BENIFITS AT ALL EXCEPT WHAT THE STATE MANDATES US... I THOUGHT APPLE WAS A DIFFERNT COMPANY WHEN I WAS FIRST STARTING OUT BUT THEN REALIZED THEY ARE NO DIFFERENT THAN THE REST OF THEM.. IN ACTUALITY THEY COULDN'T GIVE A RATS ASS ABOUT THE EMPLOYEES.. IF THEY DID WE WOULD GET 20 AN HOUR PLUS HAVE FULL HEALTH CARE... APPLE YOU GREEDY PRICKS...

Right!
You think Apple got where it's at by over paying its retail employees 20 an hour to kids who are starting out in life who don't have a damn clue? Get real man. Welcome to retail. You could be working for sears, Kmart or best buy where you have to be worried about your job day in and day out. You think they get paid 20 an hour at get full benefits with out being a full time employee? Nope! You think they do more than stand at a table all day? You better believe it! For what you do at an apple retail, 9 an hour is all you deserve. Grow up, get a college degree and you won't make 9 an hour.....

Does Apple care about 49ers Super Fan? Why? What do they owe you? Your job consists of wearing the same solid colour t-shirt as your coworkers and smiling while rabid customers buy apple products. You process their orders, almost no selling is necessary. Why should you get commission? You're an order taker, the products sell themselves. You are one step above a vending machine (and that's being generous).
I'm not sure what you're taking at Stanford, but it's obviously not economics. If so you would know that you get paid what you're worth, or the minimum wage, whichever is higher. You should be thanking the state government for the fact that you're being overpaid for standing around and saying "yes I'll process your order".
As well as not being an economics major, my guess is that you're not an english major either, with your poor grammar and punctuation. I have serious doubts that you're a student at ANY decent college.

Hey 49ers Super Fan If you are not happy you can always leave. but unfortunaly there is not a big demand for hostile, disgrunted employees. Good Luck to you, You will go far in life.

Everybody is like !!! Me, myself and I !! WTF !! Like JFK said once " is not what your country can do for you , but what you can do for your country !! Before you receive you need to give !! Apple is a great product company maker !!! Apple almost went bankrupt in the 90s ! But look at it now !!!! Good for them and keep the good products coming !!

Truth is there are a lot of you talking who have no idea what really goes on in the walls of Apple. It's not like this is the only break they give employees. There is way more to the picture. Whoever said an Apple agent is a step above a vending machine should really reevaluate themselves and reality. Sounds more like someone that couldn't get a job at the company if you ask me. And sure Apple could definitely pay their workers in the factories more if in turn we would buy the products at an even higher price, which from the sound of it most are upset with the price. Can't understand that because while you continue to throw money away in your pc over and over trying to make it run smooth I spent up front and got exactly what I wanted. Is apple perfect? No but who is? Can't afford it is one thing, bad talking a company that continuously shows the world a way to think different, ironically, priceless. For the one who gets paid 9 an hour get out of the store and in the corporate side of things...mr stanford u would think that would have been ur plan smart guy....and 3 years is great for a new Mac. I know pc users won't understand this but these computers last 6-8 years easily. They don't out date, you can upgrade your software and be fine. Apple employees have a whole different look on what you guys say on this site, if they are happy how can you guys judge what's going on ?!? Know your facts please. Great company. Great opportunity great employees....period. Success brings enemies...success also leaves clues. Catch up
