Apple said to be expanding trade-in program to include non-Apple smartphones

Apple's current trade-in and recycling program lets customers trade in their old Apple devices in exchange for an Apple gift card. The program would be expanded to allow customers with phones running Android and other competing systems to exchange those devices as well, according to 9to5Mac:

According to sources, Apple will soon introduce a new recycling and trade-in program that will accept non-Apple smartphones, notably including Android devices, in exchange for gift cards to be used toward the purchase of new iPhones.

The new program will reportedly begin in the next few weeks, with training starting for Apple Retail employees later this week. In the meantime, if you're planning to switch from an Android device to an iPhone, be sure to check out our guide.

  • I wonder how much they will give you back. I'm gonna guess not very much, maybe $200 for a high end flagship...
  • I'm guessing that as well.
  • any hope that this would also go for a Windows Phone
  • Be great if it did (and in the UK.) I need a Plan B should Windows 10 fail to make the platform more attractive to developers. I don't really want to return to Android.
  • my contract isn't up till September and I would dump the phone, tablet and laptop - would run the desktop into the ground - been even considering going over to Best Buy and seeing what I could get for recycling all of it and then making the move. If they don't give us insiders a new update soon and stop the bleeding of the apps I don't think there is much hope for them
  • I wonder if this will mean expanding the carrier financing plans to include upgrades and just not new plans. Sent from the iMore App
  • Interesting idea from Apple, if real... But what will they possibly do with the massive pile of garbage phones from all those trade-ins? Android phones = landfill.
  • Would they resell them? Or recycle what they could?
  • It would be the world's biggest dumpster fire.
