Tesla CEO calls Apple's car project an 'open secret'

As rumors around a potential Appel Car continue to swirl, Tesla CEO Elon Musk thinks it's obvious that Apple is indeed working on an electric car. Musk made the comments during a short interview with the BBC:

Tesla's owner, Elon Musk, has said it is an "open secret" that Apple is making a rival electric car. He also predicted vehicles that could not drive themselves would become a "strange anachronism" before too long.

While Musk stopped short of any specifics, he did cite Apple's relatively recent hiring spree for the rumored project, saying "well, it's pretty hard to hide something if you hire over a thousand engineers to do it."

Those hires include auto industry alums from the likes of Fiat Chrysler and even Tesla itself.

Working under the codename "Project Titan", Apple has remained characteristically silent about the company's electric car efforts.

Recent reports points to a possible 2019 launch window for the car, which may feature autonomous driving tech.

Just last week, Apple registered three car-related domains.
