Along with the news yesterday that Steve Jobs had been particularly involved in the development of the iPhone 3.0 user interface, according to Engadget

The article also makes mention of a jumbo-sized iPod touch of sorts (an iTablet, if you will), but it’s hard to tell if that word is from these same people familiar with the matter, or if the WSJ is just picking up that perennial rumor from less reputable sources.

We think the answer to that is “both”. Apple no doubt has an iTablet in the vault deep beneath Cupertino. Indeed, the iPhone reportedly began life as the Safari Pad tablet. Steve Jobs simply hasn’t believed there’s a market for it yet. Perhaps he’s now changed his mind and Apple will finally release a modernized version very similar to a large iPod touch.

    Can’t say that I would run out and buy an itablet. It does look interesting though and I would luke to see some more specs on it. I wonder if this is the iprod that they foundinda 3.0 firmware

  2. jeffdc5 says:

    Well after selling 30 million iphones/ipod touches this would selll like crazy.

  3. Steve says:

    Stupid.

    Either make a MacTablet, or don’t bother.

  4. frog says:

    As long as it runs OSX, I’d probably buy it. No real need for an oversized iPod Touch, at least that I can see.

  5. Steve says:

    @frog:

    Anything called iTablet will not run OS X, as all Macs currently have the word “Mac” in their names.

  6. StatCoder says:

    And when the iPod Touch came out everyone said “Why would anybody buy an iPhone minus the phone?”

  7. Steve says:

    @StatCoder:

    Because the iPod touch didn’t require a monthly plan if you already had a phone. It filled a gap and provided a purpose for some people.

    An iTablet would lack the portability of the iPod touch, while lacking the power and functionality of a Mac. Does it makes no sense? What gap would it fill? I’m not saying they won’t make it… of course Apple knows better than I do… but I’m just asking.

  8. Chobbs says:

    Anything bigger than than the iPhone or the iPod would be cumbersome. Therfore I would leave it home. While at home I would just flip open my MacBook. For me there is no gap to fill and I will not be buying one of those.

    All I want for Christmas ( this summer). Is a new iPhone with a metal case. Or at least a matte black finish.

  9. Allen says:

    why not a combination of kindle, ipod, iphone with dual 10 inch touch screen? wow!!

  10. LackofVision says:

    I get a kick out of all the people that can’t envision how amazing a 10-12″ itablet that would run either iphone os or str8 up full osx. It’s like carrying around the most powerful clipboard in the world. Bluetooth keyboard when typing at home, watch videos on a big screen while riding on an airplane, read any newspaper, magazine that comes out and flip pages with a finger, video chat with people, make calls on it. IMAGINE it in the classroom, every student being able to find answers to anything through the internet/wikipedia/google/wolfram alpha. No more sh*ty open up a notebook/netbook….Fluid multi-touch pad that is large enough to type fluidly (which sux about the iphone/touch as is). Eventualy everyone would have one. It would be so revolutionary to computing/internet world. The fact that people can’t see this is amazing lol.
