DF: Software, not hardware the reason iPad is shipping in April?
Analyst doom and gloom predicted Apple would delay the iPad's "late March" shipping date and restrict initial sales to the US and while that now seems to be the case, John Gruber over at Daring Fireball says software and not hardware was the reason:
My sources suggest [...] It was the software, not the hardware, that took a week or two longer to finish than they’d hoped. Nothing extraordinary or unusual, just the usual hard-to-predict timing of turning software that’s almost ready to ship into software that’s ready to ship. In the grand history of major OS release date slips, one week is pretty tame.
One week for the US, one month internationally... Can that be solely attributed to software?

Software?! Let's talk about OS 4.0. Anytime now would be good Apple
Hold on, did you say the iPad isn't shipping internationally for another month?! Agh!
And does anyone actually know for sure if the iPad will be available via Apple Authorised Resellers?! Or JUST Apple Stores?
Would have been nice if they could have said March 31st
Sure, software Is much harder than hardware.
The good point is that you can ship with a limited bit of software (like the first iPhone) and quickly pile on the upgrades. Not-Ready for prime time hardware, not some much.
Speaking of Revolutionary form factor hardware Check out the ASUS entry. Its a netbook. No, Its a tablet, no its an Alarm Clock: http://www.silicon.com/technology/hardware/2010/03/05/photos-asus-latest-netbooks-e-readers-and-touchscreen-tech-at-cebit-39745556/
UM, Do you guys not remember Apple said "60 days" and "90 days"? Am I the only one who realizes that there isnt a delay at all??? >_> And they never acknowledged international releases, so there isnt a delay there either technically. :/
It's exciting for new tech but how about a real iPhone OS update. It's time.
Adam, they did say "Worldwide" release in 60 days ... so it's slipped there. As for the US, well 60 days was Feb 26th ; I'd hardly call it a delay
At least we're not b i t c hing about cut-n-paste anymore.
http://www.apple.com/ca/ipad (the Canadian site) changed today from "late March" to "late April", that's a material change.
Software is definitely enough of a reason for a delay. They specifically set aside time before release to work on the software -- meaning the OS, new iPad apps, and compatibility with old iPhone apps.
Disapointment, 2 months now. Does anyone think they are adding the extra apps and possible camera?
