At this point, I suspect it is purely a marketing exercise. Apple engineers are not incompetent; even if this was a limitation on an early iteration of their store, they could have fixed it long ago, just like every other online merchant.

But why would you when every time your site goes down you get thousands of anticipatory articles and breathless blog postings like this? You can't buy that kind of publicity.
