Apple holding iPad pre-orders, reassuring iPad reservations

Apple has shipped iPad pre-orders and regardless of whether you chose expedited or regular old delivery, it should get to your door on Saturday, April 3 (if your area offers weekend deliveries). To make sure it doesn't get there any earlier, Apple is using every trick in their playbook so don't be nervous if you see "holds" or "exceptions" on your delivery status. They don't want any "accidental" pre-releases hitting the streets (and webs).

And if you reserved at your local (or not so local if you're flying or driving in from abroad), Apple is sending out email confirmations (see above) complete with word that Apple Specialists will help you get set up (or for business customers, Apple Business is offering consultations by appointment at some stores).

Only a few sleeps left before iPad Wi-Fi launch day in the US (and perhaps a few weeks internationally and for 3G). Everyone ready? Anyone who hadn't wanted one before reconsidering things now (especially after those Guided Tour videos hit)?

  3. zeagus says:

I think I am going to hold out until the 3G version which I can now afford thanks to TiPB!

    same with Zeagus

At the risk of raining on everyone's parade, I still don't get the point of this device (I'm not getting one, in case that wasn't obvious). I'll be watching the iPad phenomenon with interest, though; I'm curious how long the fad will last or, conversely, if this product really will revolutionize things.

  8. zeagus says:

I usually can't either, so... hang in there!

  9. Ichorus says:

I was tempted to pick one up in America, but now with the date for pre order changing to April 12th and it being a late April release here I might as well wait. Especially when I will probably have to wait until the release here to get any of the iPad specific apps.

    Sadie,

It's the future of computing as we know it. Saturday will change the world. Parents will buy it fir toddlers for books & games, mom wants it to read books & mags while on the go, teens want it as iPod upgrade, gaming, & tv watching, dad wants to read the paper & browse the net on the couch, grandma finally found an easy computer to email & see photos & read magazines....& oh yeah IBM needs a gizillion of them for all those business customized apps that need the touch interface & GPS & 3G most netbooks don't have. If you don't "see" the purpose of an ipad, you have your eyes tightly closed.

  11. zeagus says:

@Sadie - I can't speak for anyone else, but here are some ways I will use it:

Remote desktop control of my primary desktop E-boo--- er, sorry, iBook reading (additionally, I may start buying comics on it now) For mail and surfing when at home and not at a computer in place of my 3GS Movies while traveling More comfortable browsing on the train Store documents/manuals for work (and for cars/etc.) Depending on whether I like the keyboard or not it could be my Twitter device for Comic Con this year Universal remote for my home theatre

I'm sure there are other things that I am forgetting. It's not for everyone, but those are some of my arguments for it and I know there will be more as the OS upgrades roll... I think this would be great for people like my parents -- its simple and it does what they need it to do. They don't care about filesystem access and all they do is surf and email.

  12. zeagus says:

Blech, the comment system crunched my ordered list into a glob --- sorry about that!

    Sadie,

There is a Hospital association here where I live that has reserved 10 per hospital in their association. That is around 70-100 iPads (not sure of how many hospitals they are getting them for) they are buying this Saturday from my Mac store.

Their plan is to get rid of paper charts all together and make things more streamlined and accurate for their hospitals. Doctors who walk patient to patient haven't been able to find anything in digital format AS CONVENIENT as the Clipboard and Chart setup to keep records until now.

Isn't convenient to carry a laptop around patient to patient, even a netbook would be hard to hold on one knee standing up to just write something in.

The iPad has finally offered a medium for these doctors to use their existing digital databases on their patients and keep their charts digital TOO! No more paper AND digital filing needing to be done.

So, while this won't be an immediate revolution, a large ENOUGH digital display-touch screen capable-handheld-WIFI capable-device like an iPad sure brings a spectacular substitute for clipboards and paper charts. :D

Buy one when you get the opportunity you won't regret it.
