iPad Wi-Fi + 3G

Apple announced today that the iPad Wi-Fi + 3G models would indeed be available in the US in "late April", technically the latest April date available -- April 30:

Wi-Fi + 3G models of [Apple's] magical iPad will be delivered to US customers who’ve pre-ordered on Friday, April 30, and will be available in Apple retail stores the same day starting at 5:00 p.m.

iPad Wi-Fi + 3G is identical to the Wi-Fi only models that shipped on April 3 (see TiPb's iPad review), but include an unlocked 3G radio for connectivity on the go, and aggressive AT&T plans for contract-free data at $14.99 for 256MB and $30 for unlimited.

That just leaves international iPads, which are still scheduled for pre-order starting May 10 and release starting "late May" in several additional countries, including Australia and Canada.

If you've go confirmation of your iPad Wi-Fi + 3G shipment, or plan on lining up at an Apple Store near you to grab one, let us know!

    About time..

  2. Sandra Oh says:

Dissapointed. I mean, it is about time we got a confirmation date but LAST DAY IN APRIL? That sucks.

  3. HungWell says:

I'm waiting to see if 3G has as many problems as WiFi.

  4. Dyvim says:

@2- better delivered on April 30th than shipped on April 30th...

  5. Justinishulk says:

    yea, i am with HungWell...

  6. Dyvim says:

@3- I find the WiFi version to be surprisingly unbuggy for a 1st gen product. Apple'd be lucky if the 3G has only as many problems. The catch is that with 3G thrown into the mix, it may well be buggier.

I wonder if it will have the same firmware as the WiFi or if it will ship with 3.2.1

  7. Justin says:

Eh, not thrilled, but I'll take it. It would have been nice to get it a little earlier, but it's still April at least. At least we'll get the weekend to play with it.

  8. cardfan says:

Wonder how 3G affects battery life..

  9. West says:

I wonder if they'll also be at Best Buy on the 30th... at 5pm?

  10. Gino from the Bronx says:

@hungwell- the wifi version is not buggy at all to be first gen model. Sure the wifi issue exists to some users, but not to anyone I know including myself. In fact in my bedroom, I have a better connection with my ipad than I do with my iPhone.

It's like if people look for this device to purposely fail.

  11. EnglishRich says:

Yeah, very good! Any chance we can have the Global i.e not "world series" release for the wifi version? People who live outside of the US have been very patient thus far!

  12. HungWell says:

@Dyvim- Princeton University has banned iPads from their networks because they don't play nicely with their DHCP leases. I wouldn't exactly call that surprisingly unbuggy.

  13. HungWell says:

@Gino from the Bronx- that last comment goes to you too. It may not show as a problem on your little home network but it is not doing what it is supposed to.

  14. Arti says:

Note the different look of this 3G iPad, with the plastic section for radio transmission that the other iPad doesn't have. This is how the iPhone is going to look, with similarities to the first 2G iPhone.

Don't believe the hype about the "leaked" iPhone, the internals have to be right but the outside box is not, it's an elaborate hoax because it relies on far too many coincidences.

  15. Dyvim says:

@12- I'm well aware of that issue. I didn't say it was "bug-free", I said it was surprisingly unbuggy for a 1st generation device. And I still stick by that sentiment. If a DHCP problem and the other occasionally reported WiFi issues are their main bugs, then IMO Apple has done a bang-up job with the iPad software.

  16. Lars says:

Why 5pm? Seems like a random time to start selling these

  17. Nati says:

    I hope 5pm is a typo.

  18. Chuck says:

Think about it. By 5 pm all of those waiting for the 3G model will have time to form a healthy long line. One will go out to the local news outlets, which will not wait to show "film at 11," they'll likely start off their evening news with a live feed from fill in the blank Apple store location.

  19. SLPAGE says:

This morning my 3G order status updated to "Prepared to Ship" on the case. And this afternoon, a pending charge for the IPad itself showed up on the credit card. I placed my order on April 8.

  20. Matteo says:

What model did you order? Wonder if they are beginning to ship the 16GB and 32GB prior to the 64GB. I ordered 2x 64GB Wi-fi+3G models on March 13th. Got the cases already, but not a word on the Ipads, no pending credit card charges.....nada.

  21. SLPAGE says:

I ordered the 32GB Wi-fi+3G. Case is on the way via FedEx. IPad charge is still pending and order status shows it hasn't shipped yet.

  22. SLPAGE says:

Tonight the order status has been changed to "Prepared for Shipment"
