Updated: Rogers Canada iPad 3G data plans detailed
Apple’s online store in Canada is now open for iPad pre-orders and along with them are Rogers data plans for both new and existing users.
- $15 for 250MB
- $35 for 5GB
$20 to add iPad to an existing data plan
There’s also an option to pre-order your Rogers MicoSIM for $0.20 (limit 1 per customer). We’ve got to hand it to Rogers, however, while the base plans are a tiny bit more expensive and/or limited than AT&T’s US plans, the ability to add $20 to an existing Rogers data plan is fantastic and combined with the recent extension on free tethering for iPhone users makes us think Canadians are finally out of the data dark ages.
UPDATE: Rogers replied to TiPb saying the $20 was an error and is being removed.
Apple has links to Rogers for more info, though they’re currently being redirected to a request form. There’s also a link for additional carriers which doesn’t list any, not even Rogers subsidiary Fido, though its hard to imagine Bell and Telus, along with new upstarts like Wind sitting Apple out entirely.
If you’re on Rogers, let us know what you’re going for.

I love the $20 add-to plan, but since my iPhone is Fido I guess I got screwed out of that.
Any word on if the $20 fee is monthly or a one time deal? It really doesn’t make it clear. I guess we will have to wait until Rogers releases something.
KMPhotographer: Sounds like it will be added to the current bill you already pay, which I’m guessing is monthly.
Tom: If that’s true then I’ll stick with tethering as I’m doing right now, and use the sim when I travel outside Canada.
adding it to your iphone plan is nice but $20 is a rip off…that means we are paying $50 a month for a 6gb data package whereas if you just use your iphone as a wifi hotspot then it is free…oh wait iphone can’t do that…well I am sure there is something for jailbreak. If there is a fee to add the ipad to your data package it should be like a one time $50 admin fee or like $5 monthly because it really shouldn’t make any differance to rogers whether you use your data on the ipad or iphone you pay for 6gb of data it only makes sense to charge the extra on unlimited plans…on limited plans you should be able to use it as you wish
Tom, is 6gb not enough for $50 a month? In the US, people pay a combined $60 a month for unlimited but in my estimation, not too many people even exceed 5gb worth of usage. 5gb is a lot. Yet, were still stuck paying more than you guys.
Why is the $20 “fantastic”?
Now your 1GB (or 6GB) $30 plan is $50/mth and you still only get 1GB (6GB).
These prices are a rip, if you’ve got an iPhone, jailbreak your phone, get MyWi and you can tether it wirelessly. Worried about your phone’s battery life? Buy a battery extending case for your iPhone and you’re golden (great deals for those on eBay btw).
Is this a contract or pay-as-you-go?
Rogers is denying the pricing plan over the phone…they say it was a technical error that Apple posted the data prices. They have no info at all on the add on plan…the sales rep I spoke to can’t even articulate how it works.
We asked Rogers to clarify but haven’t heard back yet. Rogers CSR’s are almost always the last to find out about Rogers plans. Go figure. On iPhone launch days Apple sales has known more than Rogers CSR about plans. They don’t inform their ground troops.
If $20 is a discount over $35 for existing users, it’s great. If it’s +$20 for the same data bucket, it’s not so great.
Hopefully we’ll hear back soon.
Can’t one cut the iphone sim and put it into the ipad? Then buy a holder to contain the microsim which can be used on the iphone as well. Obviously, you can’t use both devices at the same time though. :/
FYI The current exchange rate of CA$ to US$ is 1.02 CAD = 1 USD making iPads in Canada $50 more expensive than in US.
