"Flight delays" causing international iPad deliveries to slip?
Apparently "flight delays" have caused some international iPad deliveries to slip from the previously promised May 28 to May 29... or later. While some in Europe received their iPads days early, others are waking up to this notice from Apple:
Your iPad is currently in transit, however, FedEx has informed us that, due to a flight delay, your package will not deliver on May 28th as planned. We are closely tracking your order and working with FedEx to deliver it as soon as possible. FedEx will make every effort to deliver your iPad on Saturday, May 29th.
The iPad 3G I'm waiting on said it departed Shenzhen, China on May 25 only to sit... in Shenzhen, China until May 27 which is certainly a delay of some kind. No idea what Service Level Agreements FedEx has in place with Apple for these deliveries, but it would be interesting to find out what could cause this kind of flounder.
First world problem to be sure, but not one Apple or FedEx likely wanted to deal with today.

that's the exact email i got. I called apple to complain I had to miss the morning of work and they gave me a $100 refund towards my ipad.
Similar thing for me, But Fedex told me that the package it is still on schedule for a noon delivery. The last scans are missind from Fedex web site. The rep told me it left Kingston, ON. at 2:00 am.

Hey, mine shows that it arrived in Ottawa at 4:30 am this morning, and still shows for an on time delivery. It isn't update to show that it was in Ottawa till about 10am though
Got the same email... Mine went from Anchorage to Menphis. Back to Anchorage and now it's sitting in Menphis according to FedEX. I spoke with Apple and they told me not to expect it before next week. Customs issues apparently. There are more important problems in life but I am disappointed.
The tracking for the original iPad shipments was not accurate. My tracking said it was at the KY hub until it showed up at my door.
Does anyone know why they switched to FedEx? I know that UPS had a contract with them for Canadian shipments at least, and with them, everything was on time ...
I got the same thing, except mine went from being actually in Mississauga to then being back in Anchorage and then Memphis!
I'm almost certain that mine was here, but then another flight was delayed and they rerouted mine to retail instead. I'm definitely calling to complain. I would've stood in line if I thought I had a better chance of getting it today.
@killer Whereabouts in Canada are you and where did they change that information?
My FedEx tracking is still saying today by 12, but the only thing I've heard from Apple is tomorrow (Saturday) by noon.
Mine looked like it went from anchorage to Missasauga then back to anchorage but it was just some sort of customs clearance reporting that happened according to fedex.

@Darrell That was my mistake. I accidently used my ipad case tracking number instead of ipad number. It still says it will be delivered by 12 noon today. I'm in Calgary

OMG! Mine says standard, it is at the desk sort facility in mississauga, says deliver today for noon; I hope it gets here today as i am delivering it to my bussiness, tomorrow there is nobody here to pick it up if ... ahhhh , i dont want to think about it ... i should have just taken my chances and camped at the door of an apple store

Hehehe ... im getting the iPad and replacing my iphone 3gs for the next one ... wife always like to get my leftover tech ... Fedex showed delivery exception and i almost freaked ... called them and they said the scan was incorrect and that my pack is in the trucks for delivery.

Arrived at Regina FedEx facility at 7:58 AM!! It showed as Missauga "in transit" for like 28 hours so I was getting worried. But it's here in town!
Just followed up with Fedex. They no longer guarantee delivery by noon. They just changed the estimate to "before 9 pm today". They say they have to much volume going through from Apple.
Talk about planning...
The truck left Anjou at 8 am this morning. I live in East end Montreal.
Same email for me too, I am in Ottawa. It says Fedex will try to deliver tomorrow. I am hopping for it.
Had a similar situation last week. All week my Deliveries app was telling me FedEx would deliver last Friday afternoon, even though the location hadn't changed from Lantau Island, Hong Kong in days. I thought it might just be wonky updates from FedEx. But they didn't change the delivery status until after 5:30 pm, when it was very obvious it wasn't coming. Over that weekend, it moved from Hong Kong to Alaska to Newark, and I received it on Monday. Is there a customs hangup in Hong Kong somehow? I didn't even get the courtesy of an email, but I guess it was out of Apple's hands at that point.

One friend in Pelly Sask (300 kms NE of Regina) got his yesterday. The fedex delivery guy said they had all the iPads here in town yesterday - but that they weren't allowed to deliver them! They could have updated the tracking on the website! Save all that worrying!

FedEx has removed the estimated ship date altogether. Status still shows the iPad in Menphis. Pre-ordered on May 10.. Very early. Just went to Future Shop and could have bought one... I'm in Montreal BTW.

Post if you receive yours today, I am in Calgary aswell. Last night it said the ship date was moved to May 31, but this morning it's back to May 28, and apple send me an eMail that says tomorrow the 29. Confusing much?
To be clear, the "MISSISSAUGA, ON" stop is a paperwork "check-in" but is not actually a "stop" of the physical package. Ours still hasn't departed memphis, but is reporting an arrival time of Friday by 6pm, despite getting the flight delay email from Apple. Here's hoping they get it here for the weekend!
@Geoff I spoke with fedex a few minutes ago and they said fedex will work extra hours today if they have to to make sure they deliver all the ipads in Calgary. They are through customs but are experiencing heavy volume. He said it could be around 5pm..
I'm in Edmonton...I hope I have the same type of news as you Calgary folks..My tracking says exactly what's in the picture. What about you guys that have received it? was your last update that it was in Memphis?

@David, the last location I have is that it arrived in Memphis, TN @ 5:15 mountain time yesterday. I haven't heard anything since.
I just checked mine and now it says theres a "delivery exception"..terrific

I just talked to Fedex and was told that shipment should arrive in Calgary tonight by 6pm. Though they will not deliver after this time but they did confirm that I can pick the device at their Warehouse in the NE tonight or anytime tomorrow.
Got it at 2:17 pm. Hurray! 32G Had problem with wifi. Switched to router to WPA-2 now OK!
@David, thanks for the info. Do you have to phone ahead and let FedEx know you are coming or just show up at the warehouse? And what documentation do you need to bring?
@Blodia, Same here. It just changed to "delivery exception" with delivery date " May 28, 2010 by 11:59 PM". Good news (sort of) is the location is now MISSISSAUGA, ON. Does yours say "Future delivery requested" in the details column?

Just got a call from FEDEX, seems we will not be getting our ipads today or tomorrow. Delivery will now be Monday!! Grrrr!!! What a waste of my time, effort and money. I took off work today so I could be home to receive the shipment, now I have to take of Monday too!! Who is going to reimburse me for my lost wages??!!??
@David, I feel your pain. I too, took the day off to get the iPad, and now when it comes Monday I won't be home to accept it, so I will be waiting until mid next week to pick it up.
This sucks. Why can't they deliver it tomorrow? It still says by 11:59 tonight. I don't think anyone knows what's going on at this point. Not even fedex
I just got off the phone with FedEx, she told me that my iPad is on the way to Edmonton right now, and that it should arrive at 6pm my time to their warehouse. She said I can then either come pick it up, or they'll deliver it for me tomorrow (I have Saturday service in my area)
Got it!!! 3:30PM!!! Syncin' it right now, i have so much stuff to go to it

If I'd known there would have been these problems, I wouldn't have bothered pre-ordering it. I could have just walked down to my local Apple Store this morning and bought one. So much for customer loyalty Apple. I blame your paranoia over security for this fail. God forbid the product lands in customer's hands a day early. Secrecy and trying to be too controlling has bit them in the ass yet again. Thanks for nothing today Apple (and FedEx).

Mine was on the truck this morning at 10:40am (even though there was a delivery exception - Future delivery requested marked at 10:04am).
Still has not arrived at 10 to 5. Doubt it will get here until Monday. Ottawa, Canada.
I'm in Vancouver, FedEx says they'll try to deliver tomorrow May 29, but they are swamped. Says they are going out of their way to deliver late at night. Not helpful if its a business adress that's closed on Friday night!!! Fed Ex admits they could not handle the business deluge . Rep at Fedex was very defensive and stressed.

@Geoff I would assume so. They told me that, by 6.pm I should see that it has arrived in Calgary on the Fedex website. I guess that would apply to you too!

As a guy who has been in the international airfreight business for 20 years, I can say that it is somewhat unusual for a company like FedEx to have something called "flight delays". There might have been weather issues or equipment problems, but nine times out of ten it is the shipper ("shipper" being the manufacturing company) that causes the delays. Companies like Apple will often "blame" the transport company for delays, because it puts responsibility on an outside party. But most often it is not the airfreight company. Particularly FedEx. They are a very good company. If I had to bet, I'd say the Chinese company cocked something up.
Got delivered at 9pm. I am now a happy iPad user. It is lovely.
Still nothing here..It's been in Calgary since 5pm..thats the last scan they have of it..
FedEX tried to deliver it at my office last night at 9pm. Kudos for trying but what were the odds I was going to be in my office, downtown Montreal on a Friday night? Anyway, I had to show up twice but i was finally able to pickup my iPad at the FedEX depot in Ville Saint-Laurent early this afternoon.
