Apple sells 3 million iPads in 80 days

Apple just announced that they've sold 3 million iPads in its first 80 days on the market. For those keeping track, given it took roughly 60 days to sell 2 million, iPad sales are accelerating.

“People are loving iPad as it becomes a part of their daily lives,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “We’re working hard to get this magical product into the hands of even more people around the world, including those in nine more countries next month.”

Interestingly, while outside my local shopping mall yesterday, I watched two women walk by, point at the giant Apple logo and say, "look, it's the iPad store".

Is it safe to say Apple has mainstreamed the tablet yet, or are we going to wait and see a few generations now just to be sure?

  1. Dan says:

im more curious how many iphone 4s they have already sold in the last week.

  2. Nick says:

OMG, he is still saying its Magical!?! Egh, nothing magical bout a bigger ipod touch. If you had released this before the iphone/ipod touch, then yes it would have been magical. Aggghhh. Oh well, good numbers for Apple.

  3. Baustin says:

    @Nick

So we're still calling it a big iPod touch. Whether that's an accurate name for the iPad is irrelevant. However the use of the term magical is a little rediculous at this point but if I were Steve Jobs; I'd keep saying "magical" and "revolutionary" all the way to the bank.

  4. Gino from the Bronx says:

Nick you obviously don't own an iPad. Have you even played with one yet in person? Apple is not just selling 3million units in 80days because it's a oversized iPod touch as you state.

    Go get yourself informed.

  5. cardfan says:

Being an oversized ipod touch is exactly why it's selling though.

  6. Macboy15 says:

@nick Not sure if you are aware of this but the iPad was thought out way before the iPhone/iPod touch. 3 million in 80 days. Awesome.

  7. Jaime says:

I own an iPad 3G and an iPhone. I can tell you, the iPad is no oversized iPod Touch, and even though I didn't expect much from it, the moment I had one in my hands I thought it was truly magical. The thing is you have to use it to believe it.

There are many things I would never do on my iPhone just because the size of the screen would drive me crazy. Just as an example, I'm leaving this comment from my iPad. I would never dare to write a long text like this on my iPhone just because the keyboard takes most of the screen and it gets difficult to look at what I'm writing. Editing text on the iPhone is a bit hard also due to the size of the screen.

Perhaps, without the 3G service I wouldn't like the iPad as much, but there is always the option of getting those myfi and Sprint 4G wifi hotspots. Anyway, the screen size, and the apps using the extra room, make a huge difference in the user experience.

Now... About having mainstreamed tablet devices. Come on. It has been a few months. Wait a couple of years to see how things develop. It's a good beginning, though.

  8. Mobile Virgin says:

3 million sold in 80 days!!

Yep I would call it magical too , up until it stopped selling so well.

    So hate on HATAZ!!!z

P.S. Sent from my (magical) iPad

  9. SockRolid says:

@ Nick - Actually, the iPhone and iPod touch are "undersized iPads." Development on iPad started before development on iPhone / iPod touch. But when Steve saw one of the prototypes with flick-to-scroll, he realized that the UI could be used in a smartphone.

And about 4 years ago, the smartphone market was a mess. Palm, of all companies, was seen as the main innovator. I know. I had a Treo 680 then...

  10. Mac says:

We got our first fruit device yesterday, iPad. Even though my wife isn't big on shiny things I believe she will like it. Hopefully, the urge to customize doesn't become overwhelming. Too bad our computing Environment at home is strictly Linux; that makes content management via iTunes somewhat sparse.

  11. Glenn says:

Magical, let's see. Where is that Potter kid? Harry, I need a iPad 2 Gen for 299.00. Got to give apple a little money. Poof. Hey thanks. It really is magical. I cannot help it folks. Jobs cracks me up calling it magical. A lower price would be nice. Waiting for a second Gen.
