Speaking of iPod touch G4 part leaks: Front facing camera?

No sooner does speculation start about the iPod touch G4 than parts are spotted sporting a suspiciously front-facing camera-like hole.
Been wanting in on the FaceTime action but haven't pulled the trigger on an iPhone 4? September/October may bring you your second iOS option.

I think this product will sell a lot more than the iphone 4. It's a wi-fi device, with lots of room to expand. Apple's going to make a lot of money this year with iTouch 4, the iPad and the iphone 4. Hope their competitors can keep up, because every where you turn now, everyones got an apple product. They're essentially going to be the like Starbucks.
That would be pretty awesome to be able to FaceTime with iPod users and it would change the mp3 player world
i doubt that is real. Where is the voice input? Adding the back camera is fine, but the only reason to have the front facing one is Facetime, which gets significantly worse without any voice input(Yes, I realize bluetooth headsets are an option, but this spits in the face of the apple "works out of the box" mindset)
@Benjamin Apple headset with a mic. Get some.
@ Benjamin hmmmm you maybe on to something there
I don't have an iPhone 4, but from what I understand, don't you need to make a phone call, THEN tap the facetime button to activate facetime? How will that work for iPod touch users? Again, that's just my understanding. If there's another way to make a facetime call without actually dialing someone, then disregard this. Either way, will probably get this regardless of the front facing camera, the rest of the specs seem awesome enough for a multimedia device!
It's a picture of the front plate. They can put the microphone on the sides of the device. You know, like all iPhones and iPads in existence today.
Watever
would'nt they also need to add a mic? i used to have an itouch and it did not have a mic. if you put a mic on an ipod you could easily turn it into a phone using skype. would apple want this?
If there is a camera on the next gen iPod touch then there will definitely be an integrated mic. If Apple had an issue with VOIP on the ipt, they could easily block access to VOIP apps from the ipt.
Also you don't have to make a cellular call to start a FaceTime session, you can actually FaceTime directly to the contact over wifi since FaceTime is actually a VOIP call
Has anyone actually tried to make a FT call without connecting via voice first?
I thought that was the only way it could be done.
Mephisto:
You can make a FaceTime call directly to someone using the person's contact information. There should be an option for you to FaceTime them directly from the contact.
LOOKS LIKE A PROXIMITY SENSOR TYPE HOLE TO ME BECAUSE ITS TOO CENTERED TO BE A FRONT CAMERA
You know, people haven't explained how Facetime works. Ie, how does Facetime know where the other device is? All you are doing is going to the Contacts, and pressing the Facetime button. With video IM/chat, there is a server maintaining accounts and managing audio/video streaming. Here, it's just pressing the button in the contact, and voila...
@BG01 No you don't need to make a phone call first. I can call all my friends directly to Facetime via their contact card. http://tweetphoto.com/31489641
Facetime uses wifi to transmit Both voice and video, it's all done through Internet.
iPod touch have not been selling as much as they once did. I mean how many people are going to actually upgrade their 2nd gen iPod to a 3rd gen just for a few minor updates? I know I wouldn't.
Now of you throw in those cameras for facetime, it will have a lot of people thinking UPGRADE.
Here we go again, we saw working units with rear cameras last year, that never came to fruition...
I know you can FT from a contact card, but I thought it still called the cell numbre first. I haven't used it to be honest so this is going off the keynote.
How does it know the IP, does it use SIP behind the scenes?
I always feel sorry for Touch users/owners, the expect so much and always get so little. Thats what happens when the Touch is the 3rd device in a lineup of iDevices....iPhone, iPad, distant 3rd Touch...
@Benjamin The microphone would be on the side of the device like it always is.
@HACK-MY-I Turn off the caps lock, why are you yelling? Also that was the stupidest thing I've read all day, its not a phone and therefore doesn't need a proximity sensor. Proximity sensors are only useful for phone calls.
@AllTheOtherStupidPeople Apple would obviously just change the software to make a FaceTime call, just because most people initiate a voice call and then click the FaceTime button doesn't mean thats the only way. Apple will make FaceTime calls able to be started in other ways. (Yes I know you can start a call from the contact card but Apple will make FaceTime calls startable from another place too.)
@ Jack. I completely agree. No need for a proximity sensor. I just tried to record a voice memo w/ G3 iPod Touch & Apple headphones w/mike and it sounds good. They could easily build a mic or two in, just look at the iPhone 4's top one, it's tiny. Even Motorola can put three mics on a device, the Droid X. It would be much more Apple to just build in a mic
And yeah, you don't need a phone call or even a cell signal to FaceTime. For a demo of a direct FaceTime from contact card, check out Chad & Leanna's FaceTime video. My only concern about user experience is that it would be like IM, iPod Touch users would end up missing lots of calls b/c they are off of wifi. I also agree that Apple will come up w/ something more streamlined than conact card calling.
@Hack-my-I
Wouldn't it make more sense to have the camera in the center since there's no speaker for calls like on the iPhone? So the center is logical and frankly would look rediculous if it would be off center (with no speaker).
I just got a touch last year! I will be sad if the new touch has a camera of any sort because I can't justify buying a new one for a camera. :0(
Notice the addition of the supplemental antenna sticking out of the top. This will minimize the deathgrip attenuation problem seen on the iPhone4.
The hole in the front plate is for the ambient light sensor, just like the last 3 iPod touches.
Wouldn't you need to make a call & then press "FaceTime"? How would that just simply work on iPod Touch? You would need a cellular service. But I do see an A4 chip, rear facing camera, Retina Display, Gyroscope(ofcourse), longer battery life, and maybe more memory? This may just be the start of the iPod Touch and iPod talk
It's the prox sensor or the ambient sensor.
Sry, i wish i can edit my post but i cant...i meant to say ambient light sensor but this proximity sensor on my i4 has been all over my mind cause its driving me insane...
@Jake Hilborn: calm down... and take a deep breathe stupid
This would actually make the best Skype phone if they added a mic to this generations touch. Will apple do it? Why not? It's still revenue.

hey if the touch gets a front camera to do facetime it will be easy as 1 2 3 to call sombody every touch will get a pin number like the blackberry mesenger and that how you will be able to call people i guess or youll be using a facetime account and to call people who have and iphone just type in there phone number
FaceTime works on iPod touch by e mail
hey man, nice blog,I really like it and added it to bookmarks. keep up with good work
