Apple peel 520 case turns iPod touch into iPhone

Apple Peel 520 is an adapter case that just might hack your iPod touch into something closer to an iPhone, courtesy of a VoIP client, SIM card, and a dream:

Powered by an Infineon baseband chip, this adapter not only offers voice calling and text messaging (presumably requiring a jailbroken iPod touch for the apps; GPRS not possible yet), but it also doubles up as an 800mAh battery and provides 4.5 hours of call time or 120 hours of standby juice.

Whether this ever hits the market in Asia — let alone North America — is anyone’s guess but if it did show up, would you want?

UPDATED: How’s your iPhone 3G on iOS 4 working?
  1. Mitchell says:

    Wicked. Now we need cameras

  2. parabel says:

    …why?

  3. eprisencc says:

    Soooo want this.

  4. USMC says:

That’s more than the iPhone does on AT&T you can’t talk or text on an AT&T iPhone.

  5. Brian Hickey says:

I assume you would need a monthly data plan and Att or tmobile are unlikely to help with that! If I could turn my iPod touch into a iPhone for $30 a month though I would be all over that and would go completely skype. In a New York second.

  6. Anthony says:

I dont get you can never please anyone…… This would work great for the people that dont want to pay for the data plan which as you know Att has tired price. So if you loved the iphone and simply want a phone this will work great! Great idea

  7. PeterM11 says:

This seems kinda dumb. I mean I get it, but it doesn’t seem worth it to me. I’d rather have stuck with my old LG flip phone and my iPod Touch than this. My personal opinion. Anyway, I’d recommend just getting an actual iPhone if you can.

@USMC My iPhone 4 has never dropped a call. At&T jokes are getting old. I really haven’t had any problems with them and I don’t live near any big cities.

  8. Woody says:

@Brian: Clearly you’re an(undereducated) American. You can buy plans from AT&T, T-Mobile, or ANY GSM provider and don’t have to tell them what phone you have. That’s the nature of GSM. Your contract/number follows the SIM, not the phone. Take the sim out of any GSM phone and drop it into an unlocked GSM phone and it will work fine. People in Europe do this all the time. Some popular phones in Europe even have 2 or 3 SIM slots so you can have multiple carriers/numbers associated with one device. (Say, one for your personal plan, one for your business number, etc.)

  9. Alex says:

I think this is a cool concept actually. Won’t need the contract or the hassle. If it comes stateside then maybe people will be more inclined to get an iPod touch, instead of an iPhone(because “AT&T is the devil” or so everyone says).

@Woody: Spoken like a true European. Doubting the intelligence of a person just because he doesn’t understand completely. Instead of being an arrogant prick you could have just said everything you did minus the unnecessary undereducated American line. It’s because of people like you that we American’s will taunt British people for their bad teeth, French for being pussies, Germans for being Nazi’s. Once we get the circle of hate done we can maybe just get along finely.

@PeterM11: I have only dropped one single call on my iPhone 4 and it wasnt a big deal because you can just call right back. Everyone always says “AT&T sucks they drop calls all the time” but they don’t really, I get better calls on my iPhone 4 then did my 3G.

  10. Erik says:

Nice idea to turn the iTouch in to an unlocked “iPhone”. You’d be out GPS and a camera but that could actually be an advantage for people that enter areas that don’t allow cellphones with cameras.

  11. DeathGrip says:

It’s a lot easier to go the other way and turn your iPhone into an iPod Touch – just give it the old deathgrip (or deathfinger)!

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

  12. Danny says:

    @woody

Your comment was completely uneccesary. Prejudice and ignorance seems to hold our race back every single time we think we’ve made an advancement. Wake up tomorrow and think about how you could possibly encourage someone instead spreading hate because you know more about an iPhoneroll eyes

  13. tulliver says:

    @Alex

“Spoken like a true European.” This comment makes you just as bad as Woody. Nice one.

  14. nick says:

want this so bad to bad u cant it in the us yet

  15. Manav Gupta says:

    Just purchased one on apple-peel.net

Looks like they are in touch with the manufacturer and already accepting pre orders. I got the White one!!

  16. Alicia says:

I think this is a great idea because I phone cost so much more and having a iPod touch and getting this saves alot more money which is a great thing and it uses a normal sim has all the features of iPod and most features of I phone which maybe better then the actual iPhone in my opinion this would be a life saver because I use my iPod alot and carry it around alot but I have to hold 2 devices and this makes it so much easier plus it would have longer lasting bateries now all it needs is a canes and it could be perfect

  17. Jeff says:

I am holding an apple peel in my hand as I type this. It does not allow data, just phone and text, and yes it needs to be jailbroken. I currently have a Rogers plan, but I have found that it does not work with Koodo. Has anyone tried Virgin?

  18. kevin says:

can this work with a boost mobile sim?

  19. jacko says:

IPod2iPhone is a new wireless device that adds mobile voice and text messaging capabilities to the iPod Touch. It also can turn iPod touch into iPhone. It’s cheap.Check this from http://www.pludeal.com/ipod2iphone-compatible-for-ipod-touch_p7959.html

  20. Peter Andre says:
