Articles Wikipedia Reader for iPhone

Articles [$2.99 - iTunes link] is a thoughtful, elegant new Wikipedia reader and discovery tool from Sophiestication Software.

Rather than just displaying the Wikipedia.com page, Articles takes the data behind the page and reformats it in a very clean, easy-to-read format with a chapter index control to briskly skim your way through to the section(s) you want to focus on. You can search for articles, find articles based on your current location, or ask Articles to surprise you.

Two of the more interesting features are Mobile Safari-style "Pages" that allow you to keep several articles open at the same time and quickly move between them, and an interesting variation on the pull-page-down-release behavior that, rather then refreshing, toggle between orientation lock and unlock (so your iPhone won't spin content around wildly if you're reading in bed, for example).

There's also Mobile Safari-like bookmarks and history, and additional tips include double-tap-and-hold to display the chapter index, pinch or stretch to decrease/increase text size, tap-and-hold links to open articles in a new page.

Is it worth $2.99 when wikipedia.com (and other Wikipedia-based apps) are free? If you want more than the raw data, if you like the experience and features Articles provides, then absolutely. I read Wikipedia a lot and Articles is the way I'll be reading it for the foreseeable future. (They had me at multiple pages).

Screen shots after the break, and if you give it a try, let us know what you think!

iMaxi Maxi Pad iPad Case from Etsy

You knew with a name like the iPad, the jokes they would follow but Hiphandmaids Etsy takes it to a new level.

They have developed a real, usable case which is in the form of a feminine napkin -- and yes it has wings. Etsy is selling these "cases" for $30.00 US for the month of March as a promotion.

Here is how Etsy describes the case on their website:

With its durable vinyl outer layer and plush, quilted-cotton sleeve, the iMaxi helps keep your iPad clean and dry. Plus, the iMaxi's Velcro-latched, advanced wing design wraps snugly around your device, so your iPad always stays where it should. Best of all, it shields it from all those unsightly and embarrassing data leaks that would make any motherboard worry!

Each handmade iMaxi can be easily customized to fit your active lifestyle. Please view other listings for different color options including our "lived in" red thread interior. If you don’t see a color you like, just ask!

So if I bought one for Rene, which should I get, white or lived in ?

TiPb Gear: SCOTTEVEST Quantum Jacket, Fleece 5.0, Ultimate Hoodie for iPhone... and iPad!

Rene takes a look at the SCOTTEVEST Quantum Jacket, Fleece 5.0 Jacket, and Ultimate Hoodie, and talks to Scott about SeV's plans for the iPad!

As I explain in the video, this isn't stuff I was sent to review, it's stuff I bought to use. Based on a combination of the harsh Canadian winters, my proclivity for carrying a lot of gadgets around with me, and the traveling I've been doing to CES, Macworld, and now GDC next week, I went all in and have had good results.

The Quantum Jacket's weather resistant outer shell combined with the warmth of the Fleece 5.0 kept me going on those days when it's so cold your skin hurts on contact with the air. The dedicated, capacitive-touch friendly pockets for iPhone and iPod touch were great (though I need to make or get some capacitive gloves to really get the most out of them).

When traveling (especially this year with all the crazy security) being able to store an iPhone, iPod touch, cameras all the cables and headsets, not one but two mophie juice packs [iMore Store link], my passport, papers, pens, and everything else -- and just take it off and lay it in a security tray and then walk through the scanner is priceless. (Getting an inch around the "one carry-on rule" this year -- beyond priceless).

I also had the chance to send Scott some questions about their iPad compatibility, so check out the video below and let me know what you think!

TiPb Gear: iTouch Gloves (Macworld 2010)

Live from Macworld 2010, Rene and Leanna talk to Jerry Leto, inventor of the TouchTec nanotechnology that builds capacitance into the iTouch Gloves' leather starting at the tanning process. This means you can use them to control your iPhone, iPod touch, and soon your iPad without having to take them off. It also means you don't need to sew in extra string or metal or make the finger tips removable or anything else. It works right through the leather.

TiPb Gear: mophie Marketplace and mophie juice pack TV (Macworld 2010)

mophie was a good friend of mine during Macworld 2010 as I literally walked the show floor with two (2!) mophie juice pack airs ($79.95 - iMore Store link) to get me through the near-constant use of my iPhone required for the the live coverage -- and yes, I typically drained them both and then some!

New at Macworld, mophie's Jon Bradley was showing off their mophie Marketplace, which combines a case and a credit card reader to handle transactions on the go and the mophie juice pack TV, which combines a juice pack battery with FLO TV service.

Marketplace will be available April 15 while juice pack TV is shooting for March at a price point probably a bit north of the juice pack by itself, but may include some month of free FLO TV service to offset it.

Check both out after the break and let us know what you think. You want to swipe credit cards and watch TV on your iPhone?
