Structure sensor dynamically creates 3D objects on iPad

The coolest thing I've seen at CES 2014 so far has been Structure, an infrared sensor bar built for iPad which lets users scan real-world objects and have them translated into 3D virtual objects that you can manipulate elsewhere. Use cases here can range from the obvious, like 3D printing, to more mainstream tasks like scanning a room so you can check for furniture dimensions later with a true-to-scale layout, and augmented reality gaming. The AR gaming mechanic holds a lot of potential, since any object in the real world stands to be a 3D puzzle piece, a chunk of cover against enemy fire, or any number of potential in-game entities.

Tech21 Impact Trio for iPhone at #CESlive: Can it survive the hammer?

A while back I was doing a review of a Tech21 case, which uses non-Newtonian material to absorb impact and protect your phone, when I did a drop test and... promptly broke my phone. I was an edge-case — literally, I somehow managed to hit an edge — and not only did the Tech21 case remain my favorite of the year, I simply had to seek them out at #CES 2014 and see what more they'd come up with for this year.

You can see the "now" up top, and journey back with me to re-live the "then" below!

Bluetooth-enabled 94Fifty basketball helps you bring your A-game at #CESlive

94Fifty was at CES 2014 demonstrating their recently-launched Bluetooth-enabled basketball, and it’s pretty impressive even if you’re not into sports. This baby charges wirelessly, communicates detailed information to your mobile device, such as spin and shot angle, and connects to the wider world through social challenges. Serious basketball players can run through a wide variety of drills, which include handling, shooting, and everything in between.

Not only is the sensor accuracy on the basketball itself is really solid, but the app is highly polished, providing real-time feedback as you’re training. There’s even audio feedback that sounds like a real coach that barks at you to make corrections mid-drill.
