How SXSW plans to use iBeacons to improve the attendee experience

The South By Southwest (SXSW) festival will be employing iBeacons during the festival this year for an improved experience. Attendees will be able to interact with the iBeacons through the official SXSW Go app. iBeacon technology is becoming increasingly popular for large events, with CES hosting an iBeacon-powered scavenger hunt at this year's show, and Major League Baseball is installing them at many of their parks. As SXSW, iBeacons will be used to help facilitate things like badge pickup and attendee engagement, according to 9to5Mac:

Specifically, it will be using the technology to “help attendees in Austin pick up their badge faster and get more involved in the sessions they attend.” A ‘Session Live’ feature in the app will allow for real-time audience interaction during sessions.

Do you think iBeacons will add to the SXSW experience? Let us know below in the comments.

This is. Good idea. I can't wait for other festivals and conventions to start incorporating this into their program. This is a good tool!

I'll be blatantly honest: battery life.

I hope this goes over well for them. I'm sure Duracell has some charging stations around the venue.

Yes charging stations are imperative to the SXSW experience haha. I bought a Mophie case last year specifically for the week. I think the iBeacons thing will be pretty awesome though. Definitely help those who don't really have an itinerary and/or secret shows that show up surprisingly with little notice in previous years. Can't wait to find out!

SXSW: like TED for the masses, but with way more music.

Maybe i should set some iBeacons in Waco so that everybody will leave sooner and south Austin won't be a nightmare of traffic and suck...

Nah.

I'll put em in Temple. I bet everybody in Temple would LOVE that.

Man, SXSW really seems to jam up Austin. Hotels are booked solid for miles (and I'm still not convinced it's worth the admission fee). Not that I need SXSW as an excuse to visit Austin.
