iPad 2 to have SD card slot, MiniDisplay port out? [Crazy case rumors]

We've already heard rumors/crazy-talk about iPad 2 having an SD card slot but now AppleInsider raises the bar with yet more purported case leaks from China, these showing what they think might just be a MiniDisplay port as well. The theory is the SD card slot would be an embedded version of Apple's existing iPad Camera Kit (without the USB adapter portion, of course), while MiniDisplay would replace the current VGA dongle much as it replaced DVI on unibody MacBooks.

While AirPlay is being pushed as the streaming video standard, if a 2048x1536 Retina Display iPad 2 becomes a reality (still a big if) with an Apple A5 chipset, a MiniDisplay port might be Apple's preferred method of pushing HD video over a physical cable.

The 11-inch MacBook Air has a MiniDisplay port and the 13-inch MacBook Air has an SD card slot. While extremely portable, and sometimes jokingly called iPad Pro, they're still traditional computers. iPad is meant to be a next-generation, mainstream computing appliance. Senior VP of Design, Jonathan Ive said there was nothing on the original iPad that wouldn't be used almost all the time by almost all users. Would Apple really go port crazy on iPad 2? Do you want them to?

jryken says:

Likely another dock connector for horizontal orientation, perhaps with a magsafe influence. 3rd party cases could be fitted with a case/keyboard.

Garysturn says:

Case makers are just guessing and making mock ups. There won't be a SD slot or a Mini Display Port. I can see a faster CPU, cameras, more memory and a higher resolution screen but that is it. When the original iPad was about to come out the so called insiders were talking about 3D displays, HDMI ports, and every thing you could imagine included in it. When it came out they were all disappointed and said its just a big iPhone.

chris.lenderman says:

Yes. I absolutely think the SD and MiniDisplay port are a must before I'd consider an iPad purchase. If I want to upload images from my camera while on vacation, I'll have to continue bringing my MBP.

Jentino says:

Is that a "Potential SD Card Slot" or a MicroSIM card slot for?

AttaQ says:

What impact does a potential SD card slot have on Apple's normal line up of 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB models?

Erik Bussink says:

The super resolution people are talking about doesn't make sense to me. For an iPad2 i would not go higher than a 1920x1080 resolution. That would still an awesome screen againt any competition, and would mape video playback and video content upscaling easy.

FLskydiver says:

Correction: 1920 x 1440. No need to f--- with the aspect ratio.

SwanT says:

As many have mentioned, it has to be pixel doubling à la iPhone 4 or nothing at all. If 1 pixel on the old display becomes 4 on the new things will look just fine, but otherwise the interface will be shrunk or blurred. Thus, 2048*1536 or stick to the same is my bet.

Gvguy says:

You obviously don't comprehend what you read. Gary does not say he thinks it is a big iPhone. He states that is what a lot of "so called insiders" said after the iPad was released.

Ghop says:

I think he was talking about what people said when the iPad cane outwith the specs and ports people wanted. He didn't say he specifically called it a big iPhone

Tyler says:

What would you use all of those ports for? It's not a ten-year-old HP. It's an iPad. We don't need ports.

Binja says:

Seems like a perfect place for an IR out. Our iPads could be Universal Remotes without needing one of those silly dongle/IR blaster doohickeys.

MaTiCeK says:

Hasn't Apple agreed to start shipping devices compatible with microUSB chargers in 2011? It may be, the port at the top is a microUSB port.

Shrike says:

My guess for the top hole in the case is a second microphone for noise cancellation.
If there is an SD card it'll be for transferring images and videos only (from cameras). An alternative would be that the space is for a SIM card.

Damitol says:

Nail on the head Shrike! I thought the idea of a display out port was pushing it, but you are absolutely right about the noise cancelling mic. That was introduced with the iPhone 4 and was probably left off of the iPad 1 since the mic had little actual use (vs. a phone). I'm guessing a big part of the iPad 2 unveil will be FaceTime capability, so the existing mic, and the functionality of a second noise canceling mic, will suddenly become much more important to the average iPad user.

Kay says:

+1 I hadn't thought of the relevance if a voice cancelling mic and FaceTime ... Think ur spot on shrike.
I would b surprised if the iPad had any other port apart from a dock connector.

Vihn87unleaded says:

SD Card slot please! You got to have slot when you "Travel". Kind of pointless when you have to transfer your photos to laptop then sync it to iPad. Why would you have to bring your laptop when you have an iPad? Oh yeah, to empty your SD card for more photo. Seem stupid not to have an SD slot.
USB would be great, but no way in hell they would.

weehooherod says:

That slot is absolutely not a sim slot. Also there is not way Apple would ever go back in the past to build an IR blaster into one of their devices.

OmariJames says:

When the iPad came out I first said that it will begins to gain computer type features and here they come. It has dongles to connect other devices and AirPrint , though limited , is here. Eventually it will have USB ports and such. The iPad will become the future of personal computing
