Everything you need to know about Apple's smaller, thinner, lighter, 7.9-inch iPad mini

Apple's new iPad mini was announced on October 23, 2012. Apple calls it the iPad, just concentrated, but the specs are closer to the iPod touch 5 or iPad 2. With an Apple A5 processor, LTE 4G and DC-HSPA networking, and the new Lightning connector, that still makes it the best small tablet on the planet.

Key features: 7.9-inch, 1024x736 163ppi display, Apple A5 chipset, 5mp/1080p iSight camera, 720p FaceTime HD camera, LTE/DC-HSPA+/EVDO data, Lightning connector.

Pricing: $329/16GB, $429/32GB, $529/64GB for Wi-Fi. $459/16GB, $559/32GB, $659/64GB for Wi-Fi + Cellular.

Availability: Wi-Fi available now, cellular shipping in mid- to late-November.

Poll: How much do you think Apple would charge for an 8GB iPad mini?

How much do you think Apple would change for an 8GB iPad mini? We've already had Chris Umiastowski weigh in with the investor perspective, but I'm all about the iMore nation -- I want to know what you think. The Amazon Kindle Fire and Google Nexus 7 are both $200 but both are also sold at break even or below, and Apple doesn't do that. Amazon and Google also have very different business models, and ones that don't require profitable hardware sales the way Apple's does.

Now Apple does sell the 8GB iPod touch for $200 already, but that hasn't been updated since 2010 and probably costs quite a bit less than that to make. Could Apple sell an iPad mini for the same price? If Apple keeps the entry-level iPod touch at $200, could Apple sell the iPad mini at $250? At $300?

The 16GB iPad 2 is currently $400. Could Apple get the entry-level iPad mini up anywhere near that? $350 maybe?

I don't think Apple could or would go lower than the current iPod touch, and I don't think they could (even if they would!) go any higher than the current iPad 2. So that leaves us with a range for about $200 to $350. Where do you see the iPad mini fitting in?

Check out all the info we put together on the iPad mini and then vote up top and tell me why you voted the way you did in the comments below!

iPad mini preview: Imagining Apple's smaller tablet

Rumors of a smaller iPad have persisted for years, probably ever since Apple announced the original 9.7-inch iPad back in 2010, and definitely since competitors from Samsung to BlackBerry to Amazon to Google have shipped 7-inch tablets. Over the last few months, what it will look like, why Apple would release it, how the interface would work, what kind of display it might have, what it could be called, and how much Apple could charge for it are all questions we've tried to tackle.

Despite all this, despite a few parts leaks and some information about the Dock connector, there's still a lot we don't know -- like what Apple will ultimate call it. But whether it's the iPad mini or the iPad Air, or the 7- or 8-inch iPad, the there's a lot we've tried to think through and put some context to. Here's a quick roundup of what we've put together so far -- everything you need to know.

iPad mini components reportedly begin to leak, but are they legit?

We've seen tons of part leaks in regards to the next generation iPhone over the last few weeks, but very few when it comes to the iPad mini, and next to nothing about what might be going on inside it. With the iPhone reportedly set for introduction on September 12, and release on September 21, production is likely sufficiently ramped up to make parts leaks more likely. While the iPad mini might also be on track for the same introduction day, we don't know when it will ship yet, so there may simply not be as many parts yet to leak. However, a new part discovered by Nowhereelse.fr could give us our very first look at the internals of the iPad mini.

Poll: What do you think of the supposed iPad mini design?

So we thanks to a trio of reports from across the Apple-net tonight, we might just have some idea of what the iPad mini will look like. Nothing is confirmed until Apple shows it off on stage, of course, but if we're going to speculate we might as well do it right and ask you, the iMore nation, just what you think about this supposed iPad mini design?

If it's in between a 9.7 inch iPad and an iPod touch, does it make sense it's proportionately narrower than the current iPad but wider than the touch? And that the bezel isn't as wide as the current iPad, but still wider than the iPod touch? How about it being as thin as the iPod touch? Is there such a thing as too thin?

You know the drill -- vote in the poll up top and then give me your insight in the comments below. iMore nation, is this the iPad mini you're looking for?

iPad mini won't be much smaller, but will be a lot narrower, thinner, and lighter

iMore previously reported that Apple would be releasing an iPad mini in October for around $200-$250, and that it would be announced at the iPhone 5 event on September 12. At the time we heard that it looked and worked like the 9.7-inch iPad, only smaller. That makes sense both from a financial and interface perspective. However, unlike the next iPhone whose parts leaks have given us an idea of just what it might look like, the exact design of the 7-inch iPad has been much more mysterious. Earlier tonight, however, Seth Weintraub from 9to5Mac posted a mockup of the iPad mini showing a narrower profile with a much thinner size bezel than the 9.7-inch iPad.

iPhone 5 pre-orders planned for September 12, second release wave for first week of October

A couple of weeks ago iMore reported that Apple would be holding their iPhone 5 event on September 12, 2012. We've since learned that iPhone 5 pre-orders are currently planned to begin that same day, at least in the U.S. Release is still planned for 9 days later, on September 21, 2012. We've also learned that the second wave of iPhone launches, the ones in international markets, will begin in the first week of October, likely October 5.

I like being able to hold the mini in one hand comfortably. It's better in bed for late night browsing, nothing sketchy, just catching up on the news when I can't fall asleep :)

We have been getting a lot of questions about iPad mini durability and screen repair feasibility lately here at iRepairNational. We have been posting our finding on some of the major discussion and blog sites and iMore.com made the cut. It turns out we have good and bad news.
~The bad news is that the mini is as fragile as its big brothers, despite being lighter. Why you ask? Well, all previous versions of iPad have a had a thin plastic or rubber trim that fit between the aluminum frame and the glass. This allowed the iPad to absorb small dents and dings before the aluminum put too much pressure on the fragile glass (yes, despite the hype all of Apple's products still use crack-prone glass). The iPad Mini Glass fits right up to the beveled aluminum edge, and if that edge gets dented in it immediately puts a lot of pressure on the glassing causing it to crack.
~ The good news is that the glass can be replaced for much less than purchasing a replacement or even one of Apple's refurbished units. There are a few challenges to the repair, primarily in that this is the first ever Apple mobile device to require soldering when replacing a cracked or shattered screen. The glass/touchscreen itself has cable that is soldered to a touchscreen controller board, and than a cable from the home button also solders on to the digitizer cable.
