Everything you need to know about Apple's smaller, thinner, lighter, 7.9-inch iPad mini

Apple's new iPad mini was announced on October 23, 2012. Apple calls it the iPad, just concentrated, but the specs are closer to the iPod touch 5 or iPad 2. With an Apple A5 processor, LTE 4G and DC-HSPA networking, and the new Lightning connector, that still makes it the best small tablet on the planet.

Key features: 7.9-inch, 1024x736 163ppi display, Apple A5 chipset, 5mp/1080p iSight camera, 720p FaceTime HD camera, LTE/DC-HSPA+/EVDO data, Lightning connector.

Pricing: $329/16GB, $429/32GB, $529/64GB for Wi-Fi. $459/16GB, $559/32GB, $659/64GB for Wi-Fi + Cellular.

Availability: Wi-Fi available now, cellular shipping in mid- to late-November.

Shockingly, Steve Jobs wasn't against the idea of an iPad mini...

In 2011, Apple SVP of Internet Services, Eddy Cue, apparently emailed Apple SVP of iOS, Scott Forstall, that Apple's then CEO, the late Steve Jobs was open to the idea of a Samsung Galaxy Tab sized iPad mini.

Poll: Would you want the 7-inch iPad in multiple mini-chromatic colors?

We recently asked you if it was time for Apple to start releasing multiple color options with the iPhone 5, and 65% of you so far have voted "yes" so far. That got us to thinking -- what about the rumored iPad mini? While Apple has been content to keep their flagship products on a very strict color palette over the years -- metal, black, and maybe white -- the lower ends have historically been much more colorful.

The smaller, lower-end iPods have been nano-chromatic and shuffle-sensational for years, and Apple has mixed the exact shades up a few times to keep them fresh and fashionable. Would the same approach work for a lower-end iPad mini? Is that where Apple is most likely to make concessions towards the colorful? Would you even want them to?

As always, vote up top and give me your reasons -- and your favorite colors! -- in the comments below!

What happens to the iPod touch in a post-iPad mini world?

When iMore first heard that Apple was going ahead with the 7-inch iPad this fall, and at a ~$200 price point, one of the first things we asked was -- what does that mean for the iPod touch?

Poll: Which next-gen iOS device do you want the most?

There will almost certainly be an iPhone 5 this fall, likely October, and it may well come with a 4-inch, 16:9 screen and an LTE radio for super-fast networking. But is that the next-generation iOS device you want most?

Rumors are also running hot and heavy about a new addition to the iOS family, the first new addition since 2010 -- a 7.85-inch iPad mini. With the same powerful specs as the iPad 2, but in a much smaller package, it could be easier to carry, cheaper to buy, and much more attractive for education and mobile business. Is that the iOS device you've been lusting over?

The iPod touch hasn't been updated since the fall of 2010, so if Apple gives their gaming handheld the same kind of 4-inch, 16:9 inch screen, and maybe a redesign, would that be your dream iOS device?

Some kind of Apple TV variant? A full on Apple television? A larger screened iPad? Or something else entirely?

Which next-gen iOS device is also next on your iOS shopping list?

Regarding Retina: How Apple could handle the 7-inch iPad mini display

When iMore originally heard that Apple was going ahead with the 7.x-inch iPad and targeting a fall release with a $200 starting price, we also heard that it would be identical to the current iPad, only smaller. That included the interface and the cameras, and potentially the super-dense 2048x1536 Retina display. We've since heard that that Apple could wait on Retina for a future model of the iPad mini.

We've already looked at why Apple would want to release an iPad mini, and how they could implement a 7.85-inch interface. Now let's look at how Apple could handle the iPad mini display -- Retina or otherwise.

7.85-inch iPad rumors go mainstream again

Back on March 10, iMore heard that the 7.x-inch iPad was on track for release this fall, starting at $199. Since then, mainstream newspapers have begun reporting likewise, including Bloomberg and the Wall Street Journal, and now Nick Bilton and Nick Wingfield at the New York Times.

The company is developing a new tablet with a 7.85-inch screen that is likely to sell for significantly less than the latest $499 iPad, with its 9.7-inch display, according to several people with knowledge of the project who declined to be named discussing confidential plans. The product is expected to be announced this year.

I like being able to hold the mini in one hand comfortably. It's better in bed for late night browsing, nothing sketchy, just catching up on the news when I can't fall asleep :)

We have been getting a lot of questions about iPad mini durability and screen repair feasibility lately here at iRepairNational. We have been posting our finding on some of the major discussion and blog sites and iMore.com made the cut. It turns out we have good and bad news.
~The bad news is that the mini is as fragile as its big brothers, despite being lighter. Why you ask? Well, all previous versions of iPad have a had a thin plastic or rubber trim that fit between the aluminum frame and the glass. This allowed the iPad to absorb small dents and dings before the aluminum put too much pressure on the fragile glass (yes, despite the hype all of Apple's products still use crack-prone glass). The iPad Mini Glass fits right up to the beveled aluminum edge, and if that edge gets dented in it immediately puts a lot of pressure on the glassing causing it to crack.
~ The good news is that the glass can be replaced for much less than purchasing a replacement or even one of Apple's refurbished units. There are a few challenges to the repair, primarily in that this is the first ever Apple mobile device to require soldering when replacing a cracked or shattered screen. The glass/touchscreen itself has cable that is soldered to a touchscreen controller board, and than a cable from the home button also solders on to the digitizer cable.
