LifeProof iPhone Case

LifeProof case for the iPhone 4S review [giveaway]

While at the most recent Show Stoppers event, I had the opportunity to check out the LifeProof case for iPhone 4S (and iPhone 4). Protection is always key for any of our beloved electronics, and whether you are a mountain biker, a swim lover, or a karate king trying to keep your iPhone protected while doing your favorite event is a struggle -- until you meet LifeProof. The folks at LifeProof have spent a lot of time (over two years) designing this case, and a whole lot of money (over two million dollars) into making sure that their product was the best to hit the market.

Whether in rain, snow, ice, dirt, sand, or any other horrid condition you can think of with your device the folks at LifeProof know that their case can protect your device without you needing to take any additional precautions. So, does the case really hold up to its name? Let's take a look at some video action and check out some more images of the case on the device.

Pretty impressive stuff, huh? Not just everyday would you trust a case enough to just toss it in a tank of water, or drop it from six feet onto the ground without cringing in fear of what damage was just done to the device. We know, you understand that it can keep the device protected, but you want to know how much bulk it adds to your device, and if it is comfortable in the hand, right? Well, short answer, yes -- and let's take a look at why.

LifeProof Case not on iPhone

Personally I always fear the super protective cases because I know you need to add bulk to protect, and often times companies love to go overboard with the bulk, and it makes holding the device feel unnatural, and it no longer comfortably fits in your hand and pocket, but this case is different, very different. Adding only 1/16 of an inch, or 1.5mm, and adding less than an ounce of weight, to say the case is surprisingly small would be an understatement.

Side buttons of LifeProof Case for iPhone

Featuring a two piece snap together design the case fits very snug over the device, making getting the case on and off a bit of a struggle, but that is their intentions for the waterproof seal that the case offers.  The top piece includes an attached scratch resistant and waterproof screen protector that still allows for complete operation of the touch screen, and with the waterproof seal around the edge of the case you don't have to worry about any dirt or dust getting under there.

Top of LifeProof Case for iPhone

The headphone jack is sealed by a screw in cap that can be removed and they include a headphone extension that screws in for those of us who wish to use their headphones will keeping the device protected. The charging port is covered by a flip down piece that seals very tightly. The cut out will allow chargers to be plugged in to the device without the removal of the case, and LifeProof also offers a dock extender that plugs into the charging port and allows the device to be docked with the case on.

Screw in Headphone Jack

Overall the case does an extremely good job at protecting the device while adding minimal bulk to the slim profile of your iPhone 4S (or iPhone 4). The look of the case is quite plain, but they do offer a few different color selections such as black, white, pink, and purple, and the color covers the complete device, including the front so you can make it appear as though you have a totally different color iPhone than you really do!

Giveaway

We are giving away our review unit; it was used slightly (don't worry it isn't the one in the test video!) and it is in near perfect condition. Simply leave a comment letting us know what kind of abuse you put your iPhone through that requires LifeProof to protect it.

I would love to use it on my hiking trips

MarioVeera says:

As med student, sometimes I need to check some anatomy plates or notes while being on anfitheater or in surgery. Definitely risky if you let it fall to the dead bodies or if some blood spills over it.

My old spek case is getting worn out and its defiantly not waterproof!

cjurdaz says:

I work for the railroad and I'm walking on stone and in puddles all day I would to have lifeproof to help my iPhone 4 from being damaged.

Kfoley1087 says:

My job is a firefighter/ paramedic here in Ohio. My phone takes a lot of abuse with my job. The phone is around water, dirty, and also blood. Right now I use a Defender case from outter box and hate how big it is and that it also isn't water proof. Would love to win this case and if my wife likes it I'll be purchasing one for her since she puts a lot of abuse on her phone by just putting it in her purse.

Structural says:

Doing site surveys and field measurements in the rain.

JShultz89 says:

I would love this case! It's perfect for my mountain biking, skiing, snowboarding, hiking lifestyle. I might buy this case anyway. I've been looking for a super protective case with a thin profile. Thanks for showing it to me! I hope I win :)

tworth23 says:

Need the case so my daughters don't reak my phone again.

dsump says:

Being in the garage and working on my toys, I always have to clean my iphone after using it was oil and grease on my fingers. It would be nice to only have to clean the case.

enyawedkcol says:

As an engineer in a school bus plant, I'm always crawling in and around all kinds of conditions that plays havoc on my phone worn on my belt. So far I've destroyed two leather hip cases but only slightly damaged the phone.

BiG BaLLA 923 says:

After just buying my iPhone 4s, I was always wanted a very secure case that can get me through both my living and my job. I am a college student and I don't always have 100% track of everything. As my macbook pro has fallen a couple times and so has my phone, this would make everything much easier. At my job where I am a lifeguard, I don't always remember to take my phone out of my pocket before I jump in the pool. Has cost me one blackberry in the past. This case would be excellent to win! It looks great and I am very impressed with the quality of it.

cgalloni#IM says:

as a general contractor I will really enjoy using this. Hope I can win

DrexelSpivey says:

Just got a new 4s and first iPhone. This case looks great!

Brian Benjamin says:

I've dropped my phone in the toilet, in a cooler, in a river, basically everywhere. I need this phone!

starfox5194 says:

I'm a kid who's always on the go and carry everything in my pockets. An otter box is simply too bulky and expensive for me to spend the money on. With this case being water proof, It would be great for hiking and camping with the boy scouts. I could use it for emergency situations and photo/video taking. Boyscouts are constantly facing the elements, dirt, mud, and rain. I'm on my high-school swim team and am an active life guard. Water protection is a must. I'm sick of worrying about holes in my ziplock bag.

ortiz197832 says:

I put my iPhone through a elevator slot n it was almost crushed by the door

Wyatt says:

As an EMT and a campus police officer a truly sealed case like this would be perfect protection for my 4S in all environments I encounter even more so now that winter is coming.

SupaPatriot says:

I'm accident prone. If bad is going to happen its gonna happen to me. Never fails that I'll get up to a sunny day just to have it rain on me all day while I'm out side. I've ruined a few phones this way. I get in and out of tactical vehicles all day long. I put my phone on my lap after using it and forget its there. Then I get out and "Ouch" it falls to the concrete. Busted screen and chipped corners. I need this to "LifeProof" my life.

Dalzar says:

lifeProof me... not much left after buying the 4S. Would really like to keep it safe. South Floridian, always near water.

hollabak009 says:

Drop my phone my phone every day...sky diving needs the lifeProof case lol

Jlish says:

I am a student researcher, an avid cyclist and a fanatic rower. My day starts out with a rowing a few miles in the newport bay, potentially disastrous as there is always a chance of the boat capsizing, in fact it wouldnt be the first device I lost this way. I then take my bike to UCI where I work and study. Naturally as I want to listen to my music on the way I strap my music player to the handlebars so I can change songs as I go. My iPod has seen better days because of this. Finally I arrive at the lab where I work. I use my phone to constantly document the work i am doing and to look up certain techniques for clearification , not particularly dangerous unless you know that I am doing perfusions which uses toxic oxidizers and easily corrodes the plastics found in phones. I would be a hard life for that phone, but I don't think the iPhone would have it any other way.

Miranda says:

I work as a special education teacher for students in first through third grade, with all of the useful apps out there for my students, my phone goes through a daily bashing.

Xtinamckee says:

In the past, my mom has only bought me construction worker, "indestructible" phones that I've usually managed to destroy. Now that I'm buying my own phone and plan with my own money (iPhone 4s is in the mail!) I've been looking to find a case that can protect my hard earned treasure - and this search is even more important than ever! LifeProof fits the order for me!

OMFGitsJUSTIN says:

I work in a pet store. Onetime I was grabbing a goldfish for a little kid out of one of the top shelf aquariums when my old crappy windows phone (HA!) fell out of my pocket and into another fish tank. Trust me when I say, seeing your phone "swimming with the fishes" is not a pretty sight. This case would be PERFECT for me working around water, pet dander/dust and concrete floors. :)

Robert Dean says:

Two mates just go the 4s, Siri gives my iPhone 4 loads of abuse :( ....

Firecaptainb says:

Well nice case but will it really work for me I havent found a case yet that will stand up to my job I'm a fire captain with CAL FIRE I run inmate fire crews so I carry my iPhone in my pocket we do a lot of hiking so a lot of sweating,we get hit with water drops from air tankers and water dropping helicopters and dirt and ash so my phone has a rough time out on the fire line, so maybe this is the one?

Ben Katz says:

Oh gosh. I would use this for mountain biking, running, hiking. Well, anything but swimming :)

rsaint67 says:

When I had my first iPhone, the 3G, I put it through hell, well unintentionally anyway. I broke my screen a couple times, and exposed it to moisture/water often. After a while I stopped caring about it. Now that I have my new 4S, I'm going to try and do anything to protect it. This LifeProof case would be perfect for me. I wouldn't have to worry if I accidentally dropped it in water, or spilled something on it.

Jlish says:

My day starts out with rowing a couple miles in the Newport bay, where I use my phone to track my progress and location, problems tend to arrive when the boat capsizes, it would not be the first time I lost a phone this way and I doubt it will be the last. I then take a bike ride front the Newport coast to the UC irvine campus where I work as a student, a barriers, and an undergraduate researcher. I strap my phone to the handlebars so I can listen to music and change songs plus keep up to date with all emails. ( something that Siri would be very helpful with). Once there my day consists of running from class to class, working with hot beverages and pushy people and then topping it all of with corrosive chemicals. All the while just trying to pay next quarters tuition. It would be a hard life for the phone, and it may join the graveyard of the 6 other phones that I have had this year, but it really would be the ultimate test for the case.

Paparatie says:

Finally now my wife gets the iPhone to!

LinLin714 says:

Im a fitness specialist at a hospital! We do al kinds of events indoor and outdoor, and extreme adrenaline pumping sports! Personally this would be great to have so I wouldn't have to worry about my phone when white water rafting or just riding my mountain bikes up the cliffs! Would lOve to have this!

Roose00 says:

the constant mud, sawdust, cement dust, and punishment taken from demolition and construction projects!

Josh says:

This would be PERFECT when I'm on the jetski so I don't sink my 4S like I did my 4!

Matt Muelver says:

I'm a firefighter and I often find myself in situations where my iPhone needs the best protection it can get. Once I even forgot my phone was in my pocket and took it into a burning building with me. Thankfully it didn't get wet on that adventure but it is in constant peril. I also love to ride my motorcycle and have struggled to find a suitable solution for mounting the phone to the bike in a position where the screen is visible for GPS Nav, LifeProof offers a handlebar mount that I'll pick up for this purpose if I win. I also swim laps at the gym as one of my workout routines, I already have a pair of waterproof H2O Audio headphones that'll work great with the waterproof headphone dongle, then I'll have some tunes in the water too. On top of all that I've got three kids who constantly beg to play on my phone and this case would set my mind at ease when I hand over the phone to one of them.

ThaNatrix says:

My kid uses it, I install doors and windows, am often outside sweating. I've had to take my iphone out of my pocket and put it somewhere where it won't get drenched by my sweat! This causes me to miss very important phone calls necessary for me to properly do my job. A lifeproof case is something I've wanted since it came out but it's simply not in my price range. A win for me would make my week!

mergenow says:

Bodily fluids from my patients. I hate getting pee on it.

Robnfl says:

Cuz I drop my darn iPhone all the time...

Rick Robinson says:

my phone seems to be fall prone as when i drive i put on my lap boom onto the ground when i get out of my car boom onto the ground when i take out of my pocket boom onto the ground, maybe its just me lol but i would really love this case!

Justin Shultz says:

I would love this case on my brand new iPhone 4s for my active lifestyle of mountain biking, snowboarding, skiing, and hiking. Please protect my iPhone! I might have to buy one of these even if I don't win.

Ron says:

This would be awesome for camping, hiking, and fishing as right now I don't take my iPhone for fear of ruining it!

aandrewalv8 says:

I would love having one of these cases. I'm always on the go, swimming and hiking, and skiing and snowboarding. When I'm not going out I have to watch over my younger cousins who always wanna see my phone. They have a tendency to drop my phone, shattering my back panel. I've had to pay for a back panel 3 times because I don't have a warranty. They always wanna play with my iphone and you know how kids are when they don't get what they want. -_-
I'd love to have one of these cases so I don't have to worry about them shattering my phone!

el_capitan10 says:

Working in a hospital, I am constantly washing my hands which leads to dry hands. Because of those dry hands, my phone constantly feels like it is going to slip out of my hands. With this case I won't have to worry if that fateful day ever comes where I drop it!

M0nk3yl337haxor says:

I am currently in the middle of the California desert, and have been here for the last month. I am in the Marine Corps and always have to be in a less then electronic friendly environment. Whether it's working around rocks, dirt and in the rain or being covered in fuel and oil since I maintain the generators night and day. I have a 4s on order and when I get back I would like to put it into a case right away. I deploy again in January and it will be rain and hail when I get there and hot as hell by the time
I leave. I have had a 3G for a little over 2 and half Years. I have droped it in the dirt more times than I can remember and have broke the screen 4 times. My speakers don't work since it got smashed with a 40lbs weight while at the gym. This case will definitely be used to its full potential in my hands.

Hikerinmaine says:

As an avid winter mountaineer and ice climber, this is exactly the case I have been looking for. Drops in the snow, careening down hiking trails, and getting wet in the rain are everyday hazards. Couple this with my summer mountain bike adventures, and I REALLY need a case like this.

Carly Z says:

I run with my iPhone in rain and shine...last year I ran through a few snowstorms! This is a far better solution than ziploc!

Thudstaff says:

I have no need for the case as I live a pretty sedentary life as a teacher; however, I'm sure I could help the folks at LifeProof sell a bunch of these as I teach hands-on industrial maintenance classes at a two-year college and have a consulting firm with clients such as ExxonMobil, Citgo and Lucent.

I just bought my 4s and would really love to get a refund on my apple care plus. And while I love my otter boxes I think this really adds a level of protection while riding the back roads and hiking. The water feature is also excellent. Nobody seems to offer that and would love to give it a whirl. Btw almost all this was dictated v2t. The big exception "love to give it a whirl" Try asking Siri that one and see what you get.

CarlSpackler37 says:

I have read mixed reviews on this case and was hoping that this article would address some of the issues that people claim to have. Mainly a lot of people say the volume is very poor whether it be the earpiece, the speaker or the microphone. Also have heard that the person on the other end of the phone also has issues because the sounds coming out of your phone don't escape the box and create an echoing effect. I would be willing to let everyone know about these issues if I was to win the case.

My iPhone is always with me, in a pocket or on my waist. Unfortunately this means rain ad snow and sand and, hopefully not falling into a river or a latrine. Since I need my iPhone I can't be unattached so I put it in risky situations. Having an awesome thin case that can let me breathe easier wil ease my stress and save on therapy that I can't afford.

I NEED TO HAVE THIS or else my iPhone will be sad =[

I have lost several phones because of my love of technology and kayaking. Of course with the new purchase of an iPhone 4s and the fact that I teach middle and high schoolers, I have lots of very curious students who would love to touch and play with my phone.... It is awesome, who wouldn't want to but I am scared to death to hand it to any of them. And what about those kids who have to borrow it after a band performance, I'm a band director, to call their parents who forgot them. Of course it would be nice to use my phone on stage as an instrument and this case would help to protect it. Then there are my six kids who are astounded with SIRI and want to try it out and play cool games on Dads new iPhone. I mean come on! These kids are going to be converted to future apple addicts and users with ease, but I'm scard to let them touch the phone for fear of the, dropping it! This case could mean a lot for a lot of people for many years, the ramifications are beyond th scope of our imaginations!!!

It really is a pain carrying your phone around in a zip-lock bag :-)

scgray1 says:

The phone goes in my wife's purse and I'm not exactly sure what else - soda, salt, candy. It's like a mixing bowl. Dropped semi frequently. But is Life Proof kid-proof? Send me the case, I'll let you know.

Dtillery says:

Have you ever dropped your phone in the sink or toilet? Life Proof, protects it from this type of clumsy activity. If it has never happend to you with your otterbox or incido cases, I assure you, they will not protect you like Lifeproof....I love this case.

fmflex says:

Could use the extra protection cause sh*t happens, sometimes literally right on the phone :p

talkin73 says:

I drown iPhones when they don't talk and give up the information... Or I make them a different offer they can't refuse. Even if an iPhone was wearing one of these I'm pretty sure it wouldn't stand a chance against me. But I'd try one anyway just for the heck of it...

seandrum says:

It's a nice case, but, a little pricey.
I guess you get what you pay for.
Why would I like to win?
Because I'm CHEAP!

Christopher Thomas says:

I want to test it with a blender.

Wegrzync says:

As a medic It will be great knowing I was wash the gross and nasty stuff off of my phone.....!!

Ian#IM says:

I'm a land surveyor and I take my phone everywhere. It gets punished by the elements almost as much as I do, however they don't make a full body protective case in my size. I work in the rain, sweat in the heat, get scratched by branches and twigs in the brush off trails, and get scoured by dust in the wind. Dust is the weakness of my current case: fine particles get in the port openings and srcatch from inside the case. This case looks to have the best port protection I've seen.

Somwix says:

I have been eyeing these cases since the iPhone 4. I think it's definitely time to dive in and get one.

Gary says:

im deployed to Afghanistan, Dust and dirt are a major factor here. Also dropping my iPhone 4 while crawling in and out of these large military vehicles makes my cringe. I had an Otter Box case but its no match for the elements and the bulk is not appealing to me. This LifeProof case seems to have got the right idea with it's slim design and all around protection.

Somwix says:

Delivering babies can be a messy job at times, so can many other things in a hospital. I think a lifeproof case would be a great investment.

Sketso says:

Let's just say my phone rides on my hip, and I tend to slam my hip into all sorts of things, for some reason... as well as ride the motorcycle through all sorts of "environments". Just last night, riding through a 2" of rain in an hour episode, I was wishing for just a bit more protection, and I think this case would do it!

Adrienne says:

my iPhone 4s is on order but I'm really worried about getting it... I'm terrible with phones and this is my firsts art phone. my current phone has had some crazy damage, maybe dust or waterbecasue it doesn't stay on. other phones I've dropped until they came apart. one of my flip phones once flipped into two pieces. I'm concerned because if my iPhone breaks there is no way I'll be able to replace it and i really need it. I'm in college and too busy to check my e-mail as frequently as my smartphone owning peers. last week I was unable to turn in assignment because my gsi emailed me only giving me 2 hours notice on how to submit the assignment but I didn
t get the email until 9 hours after the fact. I could really use this life proof case because I need to prolong the inevitable (or possibly preventable with this?) for as long as possible.

AverageCat says:

I work on commerical fire alarm systems so I'm up latters and hanging in ceilings all day so a tough case for all the times I drop my phone would be nice!

Heck, I'll take the "test model....

 Ivan Leung says:

Wow, this case seems amazing! I've been in a recent accident where an iPhone fell into the toilet! By the time we got it out, the phone was dead already, so we had to settle with a new phone.
This could have all changed if we had a lifeproof case on to protect it from water damage!

Hikerinmaine says:

As an avid winter mountaineer and ice climber, this is exactly the case I have been looking for. Drops in the snow, careening down hiking trails, and getting wet in the rain are everyday hazards. Couple this with my summer mountain bike adventures, and I REALLY need a case like this.

parker5011 says:

Recently flipped my kayak in the Rappahannock River, and the dry bag I had my old iPhone 3G in... not so dry. As it turned out, carefully drying the phone and packing it in rice for a few days restored it to life... but I've now replaced it with a 4S and I really don't want to take the risk of getting that wet!

About 700.00 bucks to replace it
You do the math

mgmiller68 says:

I bring my iPhone 4 with me when I hike, and so a case like this would be incredibly useful to protect it in case I fall down on the rocks or in the water, which can happen with nearby streams. Right now, I'm using an OtterBox 2000 case to protect it from things like this, but the downside with that case is that it completely hides the iPhone, and so if I want to check something on my iPhone, I have to open the OtterBox 2000 and take it out, which is a royal pain in the neck to do.

valheru says:

I don't put my phone into super extremes, but I still don't want to lose my new $850 iPhone 4S. Just out on the boat or on the beach, my phone is always my priority. I keep it in a waterproof bag but this case would be even better. :)

Shunp83 says:

Case looKs awesome!! I'll take the review unit lol.

JGF says:

As my wife has already had to replace the screen on here iPhone 4 twice (both times from falling out of the cup holder of the stroller as she pushes two children to the school bus stop to get our oldest to and from school) I believe this is a "must have" along with a new stroller with no cup holders.

Shunp83 says:

I could use a case like this. Very nice!

Christian Ikner says:

If only anyone could understand my frustration when it comes to me and iPhone 4. Got my black one of launch day of 2010, and dropped it about a month ago. Both the front and back screens were completely cracked. I took it to Apple and explained what happened, and (to my surprise) they just handed over another phone. With this new (white this time) iPhone, I decided that I needed more protection for my iPhone 4 than I did with my previous 3G and 3GS. I purchased a popular, leaving the name anonymous, defender, near indestructible case and it also experienced a drop. Not really too worried, I picked the phone up and to my horror the front screen was cracked.
I think that the Apple Gods are telling me to purchase the new 4S and I will do just that. Lol To have this case would be... just everything I need in life to say the least, haha. Please TiPB, you would make a fellow fanboy happier with a fully protected iPhone 4S that would survive from my disrespectfulness lol

Laurel Chan says:

I just dropped my 3GS into the toilet and it died - now that I'm getting a 4S I don't want that to happen again and have to pull a dead phone out of the toilet!

Damn, could defiantly use this!

ChrisxJacobsen says:

Aloha! Thank you for your review and offer.
Between coaching youth soccer (4 practices and 2 games a week) and having a 4H chapter for our kids where we take them hiking and camping (try to go monthly, except during soccer season), my brand new iPhone 4S gets exposed to the elements a lot. Rain is my main concern. Right now, I use a ziplock bag for rain protection. I used an OtterBox for my old iPhone 3 all this time.
Mahalo!

berikutnya says:

I used similar product from other company to protect my iPhone 4.
It is made of plastic cover all around my iPhone and makes it waterproof only.
This one is way much better: waterproof, drop-proof, dust-proof, and still slim. Nice!
I will replace my current one with LifeProof.

I've had my eye on the lifeproof case for a really long time, but just don't have the stones to fork over 70ish bucks for a case! I'm always in the water, either surfing, fishing, or swimming laps in the gym. I also work in the hospital, and my iphone4 is CONSTANTLY falling out of my scrub pocket and hitting the ground. While I am saddened by the chips that may be made on the outside of my phone, I am mostly worried about the BODILY FLUIDS that I may get on my phone, and wiping down my iphone4 with medical bleach wipes scares me. Please help me!

All devices ruined, so this would be a perfect case for me...

Craig Mallow says:

Well, my first iPhone 3G went through the wash, but after 10 days in a bag of rice, it still worked (minus the camera and power button). A couple months later, I managed to drop it out of my jeep at 40 mph. Luckily, the folks behind me saw it happen, picked it up, and follow me to return it. My 3G was bumped and bruised, but still worked. Finally, one day I decided to trade her in for a 3GS. It was nice to have a camera again! However, it wasn't long before I dropped it in the mud while mountain biking. It still worked, but I couldnt hear much out of the speakers any more - earbuds were required for phone conversations. A couple months later, a kayaking trip took the life of my 3GS... I wedge my boat against some drift and rolled. I had my phone in a ziplock bag, but I guess the "yellow and blue make green" stripe doesn't provide the protection we all thought... Well, now I have 4S. I love my new phone, but I fear for its life! Can you help me?

Chris Burkey says:

Jordan Volchko says:

I fell into a creek while standing on a wet/mossy rock. Slipped and pulled myself out of the water before the water got to my pocket (phone is still dry at this point). While in the moment, and hopping out of the water back onto the mossy rock, I lost my shoe. To my bewilderment and stupidness, I leaned over to reach for my shoe, and fell back into the water. This time all the way up to my chest. Phone in pocket. Hopped out of the water and immediately got the phone to my brother to dry it. Too late all gone.
I also drop my phone alot, nothing major.
Don't care if I win, but it's a funny story and I'm sure someone can appreciate it.
Great review by the way.

No matter where I put my phone, my 2 yr old seems to be able to find it. He has scaled to impossible heights, opened "child-proof" containers, and picked my pocket. My last phone was submerged in the backyard baby pool more than once (regained MOST functionality after a 48 hour dry time), flung into the street and submerged in the Chesapeake (regained SOME functionality after a 48 hour dry time). I have the most rugged Seidio case, but I really need one that's water/paint/baby-mouth proof! Thanks!

Justin O'Hara says:

I am pretty protective of my phone and currently only has soft rubbery cover. However, I also chose to leave my phone whenever I am doing something where I think it might get damaged (Beach, MTN biking, etc) or when I do take it I usually shove it in my backpack or something. So help me take my phone with me everywhere and have peace of mind.
