In Short

Photos for OS X is Apple's replacement for the venerable iPhoto and Aperture and the way we'll all be storing and managing photos (and videos) on the Mac going forward. Photos for OS X brings photography to the core level of the Mac operating system, but also takes it to the servers with iCloud Photo Library. It recognizes that, since the advent of the iPhone and the internet, the world of photography has changed. Photos will provide some of the features of both iPhoto and Aperture with much better cloud integration than either could manage on their own. Look for Photos to be available for the Mac some time in early 2015.
