Pioneer exploring aftermarket CarPlay systems, new Mercedes not required

Pioneer Electronics is looking into bringing Apple's CarPlay to its line of aftermarket car infotainment and navigation systems. While CarPlay has currently only been announced to work as a built-in system from manufacturers like Mercedes-Benz, Ferrari, and Volvo, the emergence aftermarket units would not be surprising. In fact, Mercedes is exploring the possibility of adding CarPlay to their older vehicles. Pioneer is investigating adding CarPlay not only to upcoming products, but existing ones as well, according to MacRumors:

Pioneer Electronics, a company that manufacturers many in-car electronic systems, is looking into the possibility of implementing CarPlay compatibility with both its existing and future products. The news comes courtesy of a Pioneer customer service representative and was relayed to MacRumors via a reader.

Would you buy a Pioneer CarPlay unit? Let us know below in the comments.

I'm generally not a fan of newer cars, so an option like this would be my only choice. I'd definitely give it a look if it ever made it to market.

Don't plan on buying another new car for quite a while so I was hoping the aftermarket would latch on and try to adopt this. It only makes sense for it to happen. How many people would or could buy a new car just to get carplay? I know I wouldn't but I bet a lot of folks would buy a new stereo to get it.

iSRS says:

Depends. I would rather Honda just develop a method to replace what ever the "brains" in my current infotainment center is with a CarPlay capable one.

Not a big fan of Pioneer head units, but this is good news. If Pioneer is doing a CarPlay head unit, chances are other companies will too.

mkheraj says:

I would replace my current head unit with a Pioneer unit if it included support for Carplay. Not really looking to replace my Honda Accord anytime soon.

If this doesn't work out, and Volvo implements what they showed at the Geneva Auto Show, that would be my next car.

arin.failing says:

Abso-FRICKIN-lutely! As soon as Apple (kinda) released the information as to how it worked, I was hopin' and prayin' that the likes of Pioneer would create an aftermarket unit. After all, the current 7" units would have no issue with displaying the new tech; it would just be a matter of getting that MFi certification.

arin.failing says:

or maybe just a "CarPlay Enabled" tag...

khobia2 says:

That's what I'm talking about. Not planning on getting a new car anytime soon. So this is great news.

I would buy one. I have a Pioneer now that I replaced my Alpine with and love it. I know it seems like the Alpine should have replaced the Pioneer, but the Pioneer has been a much better unit.

I'm excited to what they come up with for this. I doubt they could so it with existing units, but who knows.

I have a brand new Kia Serento so if the add-in looks decent, I'd get carplay without question. Its all about the implementation and not a GPS look-alike device.

auribe14 says:

Would definitely consider it.

Wes Douglas1 says:

Depends on the price, but I would buy it in a heart beat.
