American Airlines gains FAA approval to use iPad in all phases of flight

According to ZDNet, American Airlines is the first Airline to gain FAA approval to use iPads in place of traditional flight charts and manuals during all phases of a flight. American Airlines previously had permission from the FAA to trial the use of iPads with electronic charts during the summer. The successful conclusion of that trial has lead to approval to put the iPads into full service.

Vote now for iOS device of the year [2011 TiPb Awards]

Last year Apple introduced a new product category with the original iPad, redesigned their signature handset with iPhone 4, refreshed the iPod touch, and unveiled the all new Apple TV 2.

This year they didn't introduce a new iPod touch -- though they did add white -- or Apple TV -- at least not yet. They also kept the same design for the iPhone 4S, but did make the iPad 2 thinner, lighter, and faster.

In addition to the new casing, iPad 2 got two new cameras (low-end as they may be), and was first to get the new, dual-core, Apple A5 system-on-a-chip.

iPhone 4S also got the powerful A5 SoC, a new, intelligently switching antenna, and a much better rear camera at 8mp and 1080p.

While visions of Retina display tablets, 4-inch phones, and full on televisions, this year you need to choose from what we got.

Vote up top and tell us why you voted they way you did in the comments! These are your awards, so get to it!

Rumor: Next iPad coming in February with Retina display?

Take this one with a 9.7-inch grain of salt, but according to Citi analyst Richard Gardner, Apple has overcome all technical hurdles and will be releasing the iPad 3 in February sporting a full 2048×1536 Retina display.

According to "several sources" the next iPad will launch in February, and it will sport a screen with double the resolution of the current model. Gardner says, "there do not appear to be any significant technical hurdles remaining" to prevent a launch of a high-resolution iPad, despite rumors to the contrary.

Apple's latest iPad 2 commercial is all about Love

Apple has begun airing another new iPad 2 commercial, again voiced by Peter Coyote, and this time called "Love".

For some it's a lifelong passion [shows basketball plays]. For others, it's something discovered yesterday [shows music mixer]. We all have things that speak to us [shows 3D car model]. They drive us to get up early [shows landscape painting]. And stay up late [shows iMovie]. Getting lost in the things we love has never felt quite like this [shows dinosaur animation].

Again, it's filled with what the iPad 2 can do, with real people in real situations solving real needs. This whole series of ad
