Volkswagen bringing CarPlay to its cars later this year

Volkswagen made a range of announcements at CES 2015 today, but one of the most interesting is a small mention that CarPlay will be coming to Volkswagen cars as part of the company's second-generation "modular infotainment platform" (MIB II) sometime in 2015.

From Volkswagen:

Later this year, VW will introduce the second generation "modular infotainment platform" (MIB II) in the United States. Along with the new infotainment system, MirrorLink™ will also be made available for the first time, integrating the apps and operating layout of numerous smartphones (including Samsung, HTC, LG and Sony) into cars. When MirrorLink™ is introduced, two other interfaces will also be launched under the App-Connect label: CarPlay™ (Apple®) and Android Auto™ (Google®). Simultaneously, VW will also launch CarPlay™ and Android Auto™ in the European market.

Mum's the word on exactly when we can expect Volkswagen's new lineup to debut with CarPlay this year, but this is a great sign for the budding platform nonetheless.

  • Come on BMW! Jam a CarPlay layer into the 2016 M235i iDrive system.
If VW can put CarPlay in their econoboxes, you can put it in your near-luxury coupés.
  • Just VW brabded cars or also other VW owned brands like Seat Skoda Porsche etc...?
  • So it looks like these are double DIN fitted. No love for the single DIN older models. Sent from the iMore App
  • I was cross-shopping hot hatches and skipped past the Golf because of the horrible tech inside. The existing nav/bluetooth/etc interface is garbage. This will make me reconsider.

  • Now if they'd only bring back farfegnugen the world will be a better place.
  • Weird that it's announced. I understand CarPlay works through Siri. Only a handful languages are supported yet. I hope Apple will have all the languages for all the countries supported where Vw cars are sold before it comes to the market. Tried Pioneer appradio carplay a week ago here in finland and it couldnt find a single address in finland with the maps app cause it cant be entered manually. Must use Siri. Then the sales person told me that they have only sold 2 units. And that Apple doesnt want these units to be sold in Scandinavia. So I do really hope they sort this out. Sent from the iMore App
