John Gruber of DaringFireball.net, who knows people who know people -- no names! -- has weighed in with his opinion on what we just might see from Apple in terms of a next generation iPhone at WWDC 2009.

Very likely: July release with roughly double the CPU power, digital compass, better camera with video shooting + editing, and 16GB/32GB SKUs.

Somewhat likely: Same $199/$299 price point, 256MB of RAM

Just maybe: Better battery life

Very unlikely: iTablet at WWDC

Sorta unlikely but...: iPhone mini at WWDC.

We're guessing that's soft affirmation from him on both the iTablet and iPhone mini/nano, just not yet.

Pretty much in line with all the other rumors, so consider this just more weight on the scales.

  1. Russ says:

no high res screen, or oled display??

  2. StFrancesco says:

128, and even 256 MB is insufficient for a number of applications (and most likely, serves a primary reason for Apple's reluctance to allow multitasking). I'd rather Apple integrated 1GB DDR and 64 GB storage with the upcoming iPhone revision.

  3. rpv says:

@StFrancesco, i am surprised when people say that, if power consumption wouldn't be a problem we would have it already, however there are really no mobile phone in the world which has more then 192mb to my knowledge at that very moment.

  4. rpv says:

I would prefer if Apple would change the plastic casing, i had my 2G for over a year and it was rock solid, but went for white 3G and since 4 month i have a small crack already next to the silence button

  5. Blake 2 says:

I would personally love an OLED display. The phone would be lighter, thinner, use much less power and look absolutely stunning! I doubt it will come with the third version. I'm assuming the fourth version will because the cost of the technology will decrease dramatically by then.

  6. MattyFresh says:

It dosent sound much better than the 3g so ill keep using my iphone3g and magic

  7. pirateninja says:

    NO OLED screen?

i know the new iPhone specs are all still rumors but we are getting some concrete information the closer we get to WWDC.

but if an OLED screen was confirmed it would definitly make me sell my current phone and buy the next iPhone

  8. zeagus says:

@rpv - several HTC phones, including the Touch Pro and Touch Pro 2 carry 288MB of RAM.

  9. Omari James says:

    Juicy Juicy 32GB !

  10. Sam says:

    I want a front-facing camera pleeeeease.. :(

  11. Chobbs says:

I agree with "RPV" Change the plastic casing!!! I still have the first gen IPhone and was not willing to upgrade once I got a good look and feel of the 3G plastic.

  12. Barry L says:

32 gb, 4g speed, oled hd screen, better battery, mms please. 17 July is my 40th birthday. The new iPhone will be a nice gift upgraded from my 1st gen iPhone with those features :) .

  13. beancounter says:

I have an 8 gig 3g, and won't upgrade because, I'm with Rogers. Nuff Said. For those of you who don't know, having video a few more bells and whistles, is not worth a 3 year contract to me, imo. I already had to pay 320 including tax, and admin fees. 249.99 (b/c i have a voice plan less than 30, despite paying 30 more for data, and SAF fees) + $35 (Admin fee - ???) +1.12% tax. So about 320 for 3 years. LOL. ROFL>....
