Apple rejects PopCap's Unpleasant Horse for mature content

Apple has rejected the first game out of PopCaps' new 4th and Battery studio, Unpleasant Horse, for mature content. It's unclear exactly what content Apple objected to but apparently it involved meat grinders. According to the New York Times:

The company went public with its rejection on Twitter with a tweet that read: “WTF? Apple rejected Unpleasant Horse cuz of ‘mature content?’ We thought horses dying in meat grinders was wholesome family entertainment!” The tweet was later removed. Since then, the studio has taken a more upbeat approach saying it would appeal the ruling and resubmit with a higher rating.

Plants vs. Zombies is currently rated at 9+ and is unliving happily in the App Store. If PopCap resubmits with a higher age rating, is it possible Apple will approve Unpleasant Horse?

Peggle has some hidden Easter eggs, but nothing mature...

  2. Ted says:

Jobs doesnt like to see tiny animated horses getting hurt so we all must listen because he knows whats best for you. There was a well known dictator who was like this. Scary.

  3. EricSchmidt says:

Why not just approve, notifying the developer that the approval comes contingent on agreement to the changed rating and save the developer from having to resubmit and wait weeks for reapproval?

    • FLskydiver says:

Because then Apple would be expected to rate EVERY APP SUBMITTED. Heck of a lot easier to let the developer do that and allow Apple to just say Yes or No. Otherwise everyone is going to submit at the least restrictive rating level, which features the widest possible market of consumers, hoping Apple will miss their mature content and let it slip it through.

Bring em on over to Android!

  5. Tom says:

Steve Jobs doesn't decide what gets into the app store, get off your high horse. These apps are reviewed by a bunch of people getting paid to do nothing else. They have a set of guidelines that they follow, and probably have little more say than the shmuck that works in the customer service callcenter or the one asking you "would you like fries with that?" it was too graphic for the age rating, so now it goes on to the next step.

Hmmmm.... I think the real question in my mind is why do people need to entertain themselves by putting a horse through a meat grinder in the first place?

  7. (Copy of) Dev says:

Too little information to go on here. if they were unconditionally rejected because of the content, I would consider that bad, and a wee bit hypocritical in light of the GTAs and similar title already on the App Store. If it was submitted with an inappropriate age rating, EricSchmidt's proposal seems the most appropriate.

  8. DRHughes says:

If they resubmit, then yes, most likely Apple will approve.

  9. Edco says:

Hopefully Unpleasant Horse won't next be rejected for "manure" content.
