iPad Mini: Apple practically owned the space for three years - so that worked. Legal moves suppressed Samsung's tablet initiative and (apart from the ASUS Transformer series) alternatives have not proved compelling. The apparent success of Nexus 7 (for obvious reasons) gives them a serious incentive to compete - and if they could wipe it off the map they clearly would.
A smaller lighter device fits several use-cases considderably better than the current design. It would help them sell iTunes content and benefit their textbook program as well. 3G and LTE versions would partially answer the issue of small iPhone screens. A lot of people use smart phones mainly for data and make very few calls - an iPad Mini would fit that profile well. I also feel it is an ideal enterprise tool to push Apple products and services in that sector, half the size and weight of an Air when flying.
So far, not a single downside from Tim Cooks office. I also think Ives would love the idea.
Conclusion - if they CAN build this, satisfying all their other objectives and making a profit - they obviously will. Here is the big shock (for me anyway Rene), this might be the fist Apple device in 3 decades I actually go out and buy.
