UPDATED: Beta back! iPhone OS 4 beta 3 now available for developers

sdk_hero

Continuing their two-week cycle, Apple has just released iPhone OS 4 beta 3 for developers. You can download it now via developer.apple.com.

What bug fixes and new features lurk within? We'll have to wait and see (and keep an eye on the comments below...)

UPDATE 1: Apple has (temporarily?) removed the beta download from their developer site. It's not clear if there's an issue or not yet, but we're keeping our eyes open and will update again when (we're assuming not if) it returns.

UPDATE 2: The beta is back up. Go get it. Again.

I'm in the few where I thought 4.0 was going to get a huge overhaul. I guess if it's not broken why fix it, right?
Ultimately, I can still do more with a jailbroken 3.0 OS.

iMurdock says:

I agree with Gino on this one. I assumed 4.0 would get a huge make over. Not to say that it's not welcome, but ultimately a jail-broken iPhone has so much more potential. Apple should have really listened to its users or found out why is it that almost half of the iPhone community has tried it out at some point.Either way I will be getting the new iPhone 4G/HD when it comes out and that will leave me happy for awhile.

jeffnucci says:

They fixed the broken Camera Roll and some other things... I don't have a good idea about stability yet.

Ben Gillam says:

there may still be some surprises under the hat, but guessing that'll all be held for the v4 hardware

dloveprod says:

I was hoping it would come today.

Dragonfly says:

Downloading that soon as i get home.

Rhaegar says:

You can now deactivate the screen rotation (at least in portrait mode). There are also new iPod Controls on the Multitasking-bar if you scroll to the right.

Reshad says:

OS 4 is awfully slow on 3G.Literally it crawls.

Rene Ritchie says:

Apple is listening to their users, it's just that most of their 80 million users aren't geeks like us. Soccer moms, tweens, grandads, etc. couldn't give a shrak about Jailbreak features.

CupertinoSweat says:

@Rhaeger that was my biggest complain from the first beta was that the ipod controls dissapeared. thank god they brought them back! i wasnt looking forward to a triple click for ipod controls or w/e

scott says:

@gino et al.....remember, this was designed to work on the new phone, which no one (outside of a guy in a bar) has yet. So, in classic Apple style, many new G4 specific functions may not be enabled yet. Why let the cat out of the bag when no one can use the functions anyway?? I think June 7 is going to be very interesting. As a point, no one knew all the 3GS goodies before the actual phone cam out, since the 3G models could not run them. Got my fingers crossed that Jobs really meant that A+ business...

Bryan says:

you can finally delete multiple running apps in the multitaskin screen without havin to hold down each other thanks god

desjones4ever says:

What I don't understand is why jailbreakers complain and say we have been doing these so called features for months to a year and now they are mad because it's nothing new to them? That's silly. We didn't even get a complete preview of the new OS. Mr. Jobs and his crew said that like 100 times. It's agitating having to read through people saying the same thing over and over. IT'S BETA. We didn't see the whole thing last year as well. Apple waits until the last minute get over it.

Flo says:

According to Apples response on the Developer Forums they pulled the Betas because of an issue with customized installs of the iPhone SDK. iPhone OS 4 beta 3 is not affected by any issues!

Bryan says:

they also added the raindrop background in the wallpaper family

Cman says:

I wanna know why we can't get new text tones. I only like one and everyone and their mom has an iPhone and I always hear the same tone. That's really the only complaint I have.

Satanic Goat says:

I'm with you on that Cman. When an iPhone goes off at work, you see loads of us stuff our hands in our pockets etc, to see whose text it is! Nice to see the ugly folders change

eTron says:

@Cman... Yes different message tones would be nice. How about the ability to change system wide sounds. Mail etc.
I'd really like the ability to have different email signatures per account. When I'm writing a business email I dont want to have to type out my confidentiality clause / signature. Copying and pasting it gets old fast. Hope that comes with the new mail app. Can anyone confirm if this has been added to 4.0?

scott says:

@cman. AMEN!!! There are 4 of us in the ofice and we all have iPhones, and you are completely right. It gets old having to check to see if you just got a txt. It is worse for email since you cannot change that one. So, all day long, we keep checking the phones to see who the email was for. Come on Apple. THAT has to be easy to fix.

Waringd says:

Weird new screen I haven't seen before on wallpaper with beta 3. Shows an overview of a lockscreen and springboard and you have to tap on it before seeing wallpapers and such... Could this be a sign on lockscreen alterations / themes?

anto says:

my jailbroken phone can do everything 4.0 does better

usmc says:

More tones!!!!! 

Krypto74 says:

I would have to say that as a 3G user, most of
the stuff I'm hearing about enahnced capability makes me wince. My phone is slow as heck compared to the 3gs (even the droid kicks its butt), so mostly I'm just into the cosmetic changes like different wallpapers, alterable springboards, minor changes to the basic apps, etc. I like the idea of being able to set my own chimes and ringers for texts. I had it on my LG RUMOR and loved it.
So why is that the supposedly most advanced phone in the market is such a late comer to all these little niceties???

Well says:

@reneritchie not true, they just know that they give a shrak about those features. Just like they didn't know they'd love SMS, or safari, or any other tech innovations that make them go "omg that's so cool".

Crayolaboi says:

Another great think about jailbreaking, custom alerts. I love when I'm standing with other iPhone owners and I get a text and they look and ask "how did u get ur phone to do that?"

zero credability says:

I agree some nice tweaks would be great, and also a calendar/notification overhaul. As someone else pointed out
"Apple has reached the point where all the basics are covered, and so the company can look at fulfilling more esoteric demands."

Cman says:

I like all the jailbreak features but I hAve tried it on all my iPhones and have had no luck eith it. It bogged my 3gs Down. I'm not sure why because I know several people who have mo problems what so ever.
